The sixties were a perverse and wicked decade, in which the foundations of civilized society were undone. "Heads exploding" is a perfectly reasonable response to opinions that had previously been the sole possession of leftist radicals suddenly becoming mainstream. While TOS was good artistically, it was part of the subversion (it's makers explicitly wanted it to) and the movies continued that trend. They did this because, like many in Hollywood, they sympathized with our communist enemies.
