I've been in the house overnight a couple nights before the changes, and there were no monster spawn issues at all. If it was zombies the usual mistake is to build the roof out of full blocks and then forget to light it. Simple enough to fix. Personally I prefer the open look like it had before but not a huge deal. Alternatively use glass instead of cobble -- I carried a couple stacks of sand back from the desert last night and would be happy to go get more. In fact I might have left some glass cooking...

We need more chest space if anyone feels like expanding one of the floors a bit.
I'm thinking about doing an AFK autofisher. We were using those on the ms vanilla and getting tons of enchanted books, bows, and fishing poles.

Also I'm finding mining pretty inconvenient in the immediate area, chock full of caves down there. Ultimately we'll probably want several stacks of diamonds to gear up everyone for the dragon.

For enchanting, use books and then anvil them onto your gear, that lets you pick and choose. Which also means steak is on the menu though we'll obviously be flush with food and never have an issue getting more. Especially after I start getting stacks of fish as a side effect of getting all those superpowered bows.

This vanilla has arrows with effects, right? Do feathers drop or do you still need to kill chickens? Or if someone finds a skellie dungeon we can farm arrows that way.

I specifically left the diamonds in spawn house alone until I contributed some. Don't remember what the supply was when I was there yesterday. That said, I'm expecting everything there to be communal and we'll ultimately need several stacks to gear everyone up.
My mining total is up to a whopping 6 so far. Typical for my luck. Don't remember if I've deposited them or if I'm carrying them still...

When organizing a time please include times and timezones.
I play most often between 7pm and 11pm any day + 10am-11pm weekends, Arizona time (UTC-7) but work and family make it intermittent.
That's 0200-0600 UTC weekdays and 1700-0600 UTC weekends.
Sadly the last 2 weeks have been much more intermittent than I'd like, and it's likely to continue to be intermittent. So don't go out of your way for my benefit.

If you know your times and location but not the UTC conversion go ahead and post in local time and others can do the conversion.

There is now a completely enclosed path between the nether portals.
It could be enhanced by adding stairs, or going straight up instead of curving, but with this being a short term I figured safe is good enough.

The update seems to have reset any FTB team designations.
This would presumably reset any chunk loading due to FTB, and for me the lag is gone.
So I'd say I agree on the likely culprit being some automation that is running.

Best guess the lag is something that is calculating display stuff on the server side instead of client. It's definitely a CPU based problem, at 100% all the time with memory usage in the 50-75% range.

I went from my place to one which seems to be M and Klaz, and lag improved. Going from there to ETL's it got worse. Going N from ETL's it recovered slowly.
The lag at my place is less than ETL's place. I didn't have (much) lag last week, don't know what would cause that.
I have not checked back to find out if things have recovered overnight once I was away and not causing chunks to be active.

I'm thinking about either dialing back Forestry butterflies, or seeing if the animations in ExtraUtils can be turned off in the server config. We don't want to actually disable EU2 given it is how some of us have flight. The first thing that pops into view when approaching ETL is the water mill stack for GP, and her place and mine both have butterflies.

Another thing that might help is reducing the frequency of server saves. It's something like 2-5 minutes right now and there is a huge pause when it saves. The tradeoff there is more rollback if there is a crash that doesn't save.

One more thing that could help is changing the Java garbage collection parameters. But I don't know how to get access to the shell script that launches a server, where the parameters would need to be put.

Thinking about switching modded to 1.10.2 FTB SkyFactory 3, as a event thing for a few weeks. I'm checking the memory and cpu load at home to see if I can estimate what the server will do, and ETL has it running SSP on a 3gb laptop, albeit with some slow loading times.

Who's in for that? Anyone object to stopping and uploading the current 1.10 world?

In the meantime we can tweak the 1.11 pack that ETL has started on.

I added a trash can and command block at spawn to trade chance cubes for loot bags. This is an honor system thing. I think we'll be fine doing it this way and it's better than having to wait for one of us to be online.
Also, aphix had enough end portal frames from loot and eyes of ender to make an end portal, so I added a spawn basement and put an end portal down there.

Oh, that's interesting, I never bothered to look into the Win10 version but it makes sense given that Win10 itself is supposedly "portable" to things like phones and tablets.

Pack update:

I've been poking around 1.11.2 and there are now plenty of mods available. At least one desirable mod has a compatibility bug and should have an update coming soon. When that is fixed it's possible we may be a go, but I have some questions on hosting.

Having done some playtesting I strongly suspect that the lag problem is a generic processor power issue on the host that ETL is using, not the modpack.
This is especially obvious given it's really laggy on a skyblock map even before anyone logs in (as evidenced by server skipping ticks messages). The tick issue is some form of CPU shortage.
It is possible that the problem is the Java garbage collection settings (which made a huge difference on my desktop), but it isn't clear those can even be changed on this hosting service.

Update: I'm also looking into 1.12 as a possible version. A lot of stuff is available, and adding things should not be as perilous as it was back in the days of id conflicts.
Not sure what's missing on that level... but I'm gonna see if what is available works.

What we're currently waiting on is an incompatibility between Mekanism and a mod that Dark Utilities is dependent on.
We can wait for an official Mekanism update, or possibly use an unofficial fork in hopes that it won't break when the official one comes out, or go forward without the things that depend on that library.
If we go forward and the later update breaks it, we'd have to choose between not updating or starting a new world.

Play testing is going very well. I'm comfortable with the pack as is, without DarkUtils (and whatever those other mods were). I have one remaining open question related to Thermal Foundation Platinum which I'm not seeing for some reason. Surprisingly, the last time I checked memory it was only taking 1.9GB working set in SSP, but that was before a nether trip.

I happen to agree with that comment in general, it seems like writing a basic summary is a lost art for some people.

It also annoys me when a mod has no written doc (in the thread, project, wiki, ingame, anywhere) and the answer to a question is "watch the mod spotlight video". I don't want to watch videos at 1am when the rest of the family is sleeping, I want to be able to read the info in relative silence. Folks know how to make a video but they don't know how to write down instructions?

The EU2 book definitely doesn't work in my test pack, which is annoying but not a deal breaker.
The golden lasso recipe was a JEI issue, I could make it using the recipe I remembered.

The platinum issue was it not being in the config at all, and windows search couldn't find it in another pack's config even though the mark-1 eyeball had no problem at all. So it is added in but I'll have to abandon my already constructed spawn platform and generate a new world because I flew around a bunch to find a good spot and can't find a way to retrogen the COFH stuff. Not a big deal just a half hour or so in creative.

Left to do:
Fly to new land on the test world and check oregen.
Gen new clean world and build spawn.
Convert SSP instance to server.
Save & store modded, upload server & test world, verify it doesn't lag.
Upload client package & real world, and open it up.

Hold off a bit, Maestro pointed out that this is neither recommended nor latest forge so it may cause problems.
That may also clear up a couple things that were disabled due to crashes while I was building it.

On both the client and server I have found that Java 8's default settings are not the best.
Two additional parameters can make a huge difference.

-XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC

You can probably get by with less memory as needed.

Looks like I forgot to restart Mirc the last time I rebooted.
The servers drop auto-op status when a userid expires after not being used after a period of time. I don't remember what the delay time is.
Edit: It's 30 days for NickServ registration. Once your userid becomes unregistered, the auto-op goes away with it.

That's generally how age affects things. Boot/load times can sometimes be improved by a defrag, but a defrag won't help if it's more a registry thing or just the weight of the accumulated stuff.
If cpu/graphics performance goes down over time it could be a heat issue, in which case opening it up and blowing stuff out can help -- once you're past the danger of a warranty issue if you care about that.

We re-genned the nether, after taking out most of the BoP nether biomes and correcting netherending ores.

Nether portal fix makes it so you go back to the place you entered the nether from. It does not give each of us a personal portal.
There is probably a way to do that by going to the nether, building a portal where yours should be, and going back through it to reconnect.
It may also be necessary to temporarily break the other person's portal.
I'll try that to see if it works.
At least you don't end up with not being able to get home at all...

Oso, I think your portal catches you on fire because it's below "sea level" in the nether. Just a guess but it's the best guess I have.
Recommend breaking the nether side portal, building a new one higher up, and going back through to OW to link the new one.
If that's not enough you might need to break on both ends and build the OW side higher.

I get this consistently on the 1st login after reloading client, and occasionally more than once.
I have also had numerous instances where part of the screen is that "really distant fog" color before it logs me off.
It seems to me that there is some handshaking on loading chunks from server to client which is timing out.

The server's broken, something went wrong with industrial foregoing.
Whacking the block that looked to be breaking it according to the crash dump just resulted in a new error.
Whacked that block and it reports yet another error, in a place where nothing from that mod is even there.

I'll start an upload of the backup zip in case we need it, will post a location in the morning if it's needed.

The industrial foregoing dev is asking if "machines were moved with carry on", meaning picked up by sneak-rclick with empty hand and placed somewhere else.

I'll generalize that to "have IF machines been moved, and if so using what method".

Actually, had another idea. I think the pack takes an embedded backup. I'll see if one of those will load, then it just rolls back the clock a bit from the last good point.

Now I'm really confused. I've gone back about 6 backups covering 12 hours and none of them will load.
None of the config or mods directory files have been touched since December, so it's not being caused by any kind of update.
I wonder if maybe the hosting company bumped to a new Java level and these exceptions are caused by that?
The minecraft jar and forge jar both have the right dates.
I can unzip and load the older of these saves in SSP, but unzip / upload / start server and they crash.

There are still a few older backups I haven't tried, but past midnight isn't a good time to do that.

Ends up being a config change that somehow causes a crash, that somehow corrupted the Industrial Foregoing when the server tries to save while coming down from the crash.
Ugly programming to say the least.
But the server is recovered to Friday 19:41 GMT (that's 12:41 mountain standard, 14:41 eastern).

We're using a modified pack.
Add the netherending ores in the link inside the quote.
Delete Forestry and anything that depends on it (for example Binnie's mods).

If you connect back up it should work. If reconnecting doesn't work it means it took your client too long to receive server data.
ETL had that issue persistently, and she got by it by increasing memory slightly, I think.
Still don't know what is the real cause of it though, and have not had a chance to check the various bug reports.

We talked on Irc about possible new servers. It was suggested that FTB Horizons 3 would be good because it has some mods we don't usually have.

Since Akliz allows up to 8 servers to be defined as long as the active ones don't exceed the memory allocation, here's what I did.
The DW20 server is stopped but still there in case someone wants it.

A new server is started on FTB Horizons 3 (1.12.2, modpack version 1.7.0) using the standard out of the box modpack settings.
New server address is mshoriz3.g.akliz.net -- no need for a port number. It isn't on IRC yet, that takes a small amount of extra work.

On the subject of streaming, I don't have a strong personal opinion.
From the admin point of view I think it should require consent of those present, at least.
FWIW we've had people doing streaming/recording before, for example Gabe and Osota.
I think the planned usage of the material also needs to be disclosed.

Regarding vouching, we've only had one recent example of someone coming in who wasn't a known member, and it was a technical error. I expected WL to be enabled by default but it wasn't.
I think it's important to be welcoming. It's also important to have standards. Community input is essential.
We had a griefing/stealing incident on vanilla a while back, and IIRC it was an established site member. So the established member criteria isn't necessarily adequate.

Regarding pack selection, the challenge is coming up with common ground to find a set of mods which appeals to a broad audience and has staying power.
It didn't help that the landscape was constantly changing. Maybe things are stable enough now to go custom, if we have adequate input.

There are some things I haven't done on the current server but the list is dwindling. It hasn't reached the

stage but the itch has started.
Don't want to rush anyone... need input on where y'all are.

The new pack comment is more about long term planning, not anything imminent.
I just took a look at what's available and it's mind blowing.
Probably take weeks to months to find out what works well together.
Definite wants and dislikes, in broad terms, is enough at this point.

I'd caution against rushing things. Some of our past problems came from things that looked good in SSP but performed badly on server.

I've been pretty happy with the premade packs we've used recently. Can't think of any "standard" things that should be excluded so I'll just post some recent news vs a complete list.
Ender IO (does not say in the jar if it's release/beta) -- old favorite with a new mechanic which requires lighting bedrock on fire.
Thaumcraft 6 (beta) -- another favorite (of most, though there are some haters) -- also has a new mechanic, and looks to be completely reworked progression

Additional Plugs for Astral sorcery, Psi, Bees, all of which give variety -- the more different things to progress on, the better chance it has of lasting.

Re: power systems -- modern converter says it's a replacement for power converters, which lets you unify EU/RF.
I don't object to things like Tech Reborn if it offers an alternative way with tradeoffs. Choices are good at keeping interest in a server.
Same thing goes for mods I personally don't have an interest in, like blood magic -- choices are good for other people.

Agree on leaving stuff out if it really isn't ready. As much as I push for stability and long-term playability, there is also a sweet spot beyond which interest dies off. I like hoppin' servers more than dead ones, so perhaps quarterly upgrade and reboot if it craters.

Regarding digiminer, the alternative on nether drac is rftools quarry, filter out useless stuff. IIRC that does require pearls which digiminer doesn't, which means that digiminer fills a necessary gap for me. Both kinds of quarry require you to go move it periodically, so even if "OP" in terms of sucking a chunk dry it's still labor intensive. Compare that to all the void miners which are set and forget...

Honestly, most players are swimming in resources after a week or two of RL anyway. OP vs not-OP is only relevant during the startup phase. The key is oregen balanced so that those startup days/weeks are challenging without being a grind. Personally I hate having to manually mine cubic chunks in order to get enough diamonds and ore to progress, but I do want to manually mine

I like RFTDim because it has the potential for surface biome variety missing in other dimension mods. It also has the all cave biome that resembles nether with OW blocks. You can OP those but past the previously mentioned couple weeks of startup the OP-ness is what keeps certain players interested enough to stay on the server. On the Akliz servers, even with heavy exploration the lag has only been short term and not especially troublesome.

You might be able to use a much lower memory setting, I run with slightly over 4gb without much issue.

My java is 1.8.0_151 and I specify the extra parms -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC.
I use "resource monitor" on windows to see committed vs working set memory usage. Mine is at the max memory I specified too... 5120MB.
In F3 upper right corner mem% is fluctuating around 87%. Though that's in game, not at splash.

Without having more info best guess is that either Windows or the JVM have changed to be proactive and give it the max up front. Though if you're getting apples vs. oranges between this pack and another on the same windows/java then it's bloat somewhere in the pack.

Cut back dramatically on granite/andesite/diorite/marble not astral sorcery/limestone/whatever other non-stone there is. Too much of that stuff just clutters things up. Though I'm willing to be voted down on this. Don't nerf underground gravel and clay as much though, that stuff is needed in small quantities.
Some of the ores don't show up in the /oredistribution report. But it's helpful to find the dups. Probably have to do the quarry all the stone/other mundane stuff and see what's left method.
Butterflies were an issue a few servers back. During testing, we should do something that causes lots of them to find out if it's still an issue.
Another prior server issue was lag that we never were sure if it was archimedes or something else. Test the flying ships things (davinci?) to see if it's an issue.

Op people during testing and deop later? Or try a week of mostly survival to see what happens? I'm ok either way, can do some of the op-worthy stuff myself...

Let me know if you want me to go strictly as-is with what is uploaded, or comb through configs (if I have time). Don't want to duplicate work / step on toes but OTOH we may notice different things...

When Akliz restarted things most recently they auto started horizons which is the N-1 pack. I'll turn that one off, make the custom pack another server, and use the 4gb that's in use by horizons currently. Leaving revelation up for the people who are still playing it (myself included though I've been doing this the past couple days...)

The 'not responding' in phase 2/7 is almost always a problem with not enough memory. It's trying to prep all the graphics which get built during load time.
Recommended is 4GB if you have it.

On both the client and server I have found that Java 8's default settings are not the best.
Two additional parameters can make a huge difference.

-XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC

Example minecraft settings page for curse/twitch client. This setting is at the very bottom of settings->minecraft.
You can probably get by with less memory as needed.

This setting can help with lag spikes, doesn't always though.
I don't have a screenshot for multiMC but it's in advanced java settings.

Regarding the java update message -- yes there's a pretty serious bug that is fixed by later java.
I'm on Java 8.0_151 for the client side.

Twitch launcher is remarkably pig-headed with regard to Java. I had to fight with it a bunch. May have had to drop my JRE into Twitch's folder. It also may matter what the setting is inside the launcher itself.
In the overall twitch app settings (down arrow in the far upper right corner, settings), click the minecraft tab. I'm using "Jar Launcher" -- was NOT able to get it to work correctly with "Native Launcher".
Then below that there is a Java version, where I was able to select the 1.8.0.151 level.

If you're able to use MultiMC as an alternative that might work better / be easier.

Regarding config tweaks / new world: if there is something other than oregen that you know needs to be tweaked let me know.
I missed fence jumper in the last update, so will be including that. Are there any other consensus mods that are missing?

Planned approach is to make the updates, restart server, TP to a distant place to check oregen while y'all verify it didn't break anything else.

According to the oredistribution command all the dups are now gone except bauxite -- that has tech reborn and immersive engineering and both are needed for different purposes.
I think the galena is just lead+silver with a side of sulfur. For safety sake I think we should follow Maestro's suggestion and drop the gen way down but not zero. It's less than osmium now, lead & silver are plentiful as it is.

I'm done with all the tweaks I know about, and the oregen looks as shown in my previous post aside from reducing Galena. Mining world currently has perpetual noon, but hostiles spawn during the "night" hours and don't burn. One of the weirder things I've seen. Must be because I changed the setting on one which had previously gen'd. The new world should go back to normal, I think. It does gen new chunks with stone top now. I left it running with the new settings except for Galena which has been changed but not activated.

Tentatively ready to go pending additional changes from ETL and Maestro.

I'm equally lost on aphix's issue, it flat out doesn't make sense.

The way I've been doing upgrades is to upload new mod/config directories under different directory names, then it's just a rename to switch 'em.

Simple thing to make an updated mods/configs zip for those who avoid the twitch launcher.

The release level of SP8 has been loaded to CurseForge. To use from the Twitch app, use "browse all modpacks", search for ScumPack. Create a new instance from the modpack.
The filename to use is ScumPack-8.05R.zip. Twitch-served packs do not contain the actual mods, only the list of mods for the app to install.

Found a gaming tip for Windows.
This can free up memory if you have stuttering due to standby memory, as Windows will then be able to service page requests without grabbing from the standby list.
This may hurt performance in cases where Windows is correctly using standby memory for programs you'll be using again soon. Use at own risk. It worked for me...

Forge so that client side mods can be used without going to the complexity of server side mods? Or does that mess things up? Can true vanilla client connect to forge? Can forge connect to true vanilla? I could figure all this stuff out by experimenting but it saves time to ask...

We already had one set up, it just needed to be started.
If there is a push to upgrade it can be upgraded, or another started if the push comes before folks start building a bunch of stuff.

Before we get too far with building the wall, may I suggest using stone brick instead of cobble for the outer layers?
There is a lava pool nearby which would allow stone to be smelted very efficiently.
I'd be happy to donate some buckets to that operation, and perhaps hoppers to automate it.

I view the "economy" as being just a fun way to interact. The community aspect is equally interesting to me, perhaps more so.
That's why the stone making furnace is in the area that I'm assuming was meant to be common.

There is a vanilla 1.12.2 server. You give your minecraft name to be whitelisted. Choose multiplayer and put the name of the server, which is msvanilla.g.akliz.net, and run like hell to the safe place if it's dark. (unless you like unarmed combat in which case go for it lol)
