A small town cut off from the world. Has the end of the world come? Are you the last bastion of hope? Isn't this very similar to the plot of Jericho?

But your small town has been infiltrated by a sinister shadowy organization and you are not sure who you can trust! These Others have nothing to do with the show Lost, but they are Mafia. Sad, but true.

Some of you have special powers to battle the Mafia. They aren't cool powers like in Heroes, but they are powers nonetheless.

You could turn into a rampaging mob to catch the Mafia. But, you live in America. And that means democracy. Every day, you will vote to lynch one person by putting slips of paper into a box. (It's just a shoebox with a hole cut into the top - you wish you had a better one, but the town has fallen on hard times.) Since the accused has a right to face his or her accusers in America, the votes will not be kept secret.

But someone has to count the votes. And what vote-counter would announce his or her own lynch? So, you must agree to make one person immune from the vote each day. No, this isn't Survivor.

A very serious task for a trouble time. This is no time to be hasty.

General

* If you disagree with something the mod has done, or have a question about the game, feel free to PM.
* Do not quote your role PMs to prove your innocence. Paraphrasing is acceptable, and if you are uncertain as to what is acceptable, PM me to check. Violators will be modkilled.
* Do not discuss this game outside this thread, unless you have a role which allows this, and even then, only at night and only with the designated players.
* If you're dead, you're dead, and since the dead aren't alive, you're dead. Stop posting. I will allow a single "Bah!" post that contains no game content.
* If you have moderating powers in this forum, do not edit or delete the posts of either yourself or another player. If you are caught, you will be modkilled.
*

Please avoid using too many fancy text tags. If you start using colors or tiny text or using bold for something other than voting or messages to the moderator, then you may be asked to stop.

* Have fun! Don't take the game personally, and don't flame other players.

Inactivity and Prods

* Lurking is not allowed as a strategy in this game, as it is highly likely to slow the game down to a halt. Any player who becomes inactive will be prodded after one week, and will be replaced if there are no posts after two weeks of inactivity.

Unusual rules specific to this game will be contained in the next post.

Unusual Rules

Voting

* The game has a voting phase, which occurs between the day phase and the night phase. The voting phase starts exactly

one month

of real time after the day phase begins. At that point, it is "Election Day" and the thread will be locked.
* The players can prematurely cause the polls to open by calling for a vote. You can call for a vote by saying in thread

Open Polls

in bold. If you change your mind, you can write

Un-Open Polls

in bold. (Yes, I wanted to avoid "Close Polls" on purpose.)
* Once a majority of living players have voted to open the polls, the game will proceed to Election Day. If a majority is never reached, the game automatically goes to Election Day after one month of real time.
* All living players

must vote

by PM to me while the polls are open. Voting for "No Lynch" is allowed.
* All votes are revealed after all players have voted. Any player who has received a majority of the votes will be lynched and the game will proceed to night.
* If no player reaches a majority of votes, then there will be a run-off election between the two highest vote-getters (plus anyone tied with those vote-getters). During the run-off election, you may only vote for those players. Whoever has the most votes after the run-off election will be lynched, even if he or she does not receive a majority. For an explanation of ties, please see the Immunity section.
* Between Election Day and the Run-Off Election, the thread will be open for one week.
*

NOTE: Even though the thread is locked during Election Day, it is not a night phase. Mafia may not communicate.

Immunity

* One player each day will be immune from votes. That player will also cast a tie-breaking vote (if necessary) during run-off elections.
* To grant immunity to someone, please write in thread in bold Immunity followed by the player's name, e.g.

Un-Immunity

. Please use the Un-Immunity tag before granting someone else immunity. (Pretend you're voting.)
* You may not choose to give immunity to yourself
* The person with the most immunity votes will be granted immunity, even if that player does not have a majority of votes. Ties are broken by longest-held vote.
* Someone must be given immunity. If Election Day comes and no players have immunity, then it will be assigned randomly.

Morning again. At first you devised your little plan of lynching people because, well, it was better than doing nothing. You didn't have any proof that your town was besieged by Mafia. You thought, perhaps it was just our overactive imaginations? Perhaps we watched too many episodes of the Sopranos?

You figured you would wake up and cooler heads would prevail.

Of course, the coolest head of all is the one completely drained of body heat, being dead and all. It's a gruesome scene, but you've seen much more bloody stuff before. Still, the fact that it was a real death is somewhat bothersome.

Searching the body, you find a gun. You think about keeping it and then realize that guns don't kill people, but people kill people. And it's time to do some killing. Or at least some talking and then some voting that will indirectly lead to killing. That's almost as good.

The wait was excruciating. What was taking so long in counting the votes? Still, nothing was coming through on the television. And, even if it did, who really wanted to watch seven weeks of American Idol auditions and American Gladiators?

The town has fallen on hard times. Some people remember the last time the town had a Mafia problem. A new person asks, "What happens now?"

An old timer says, "Well, after the lynching, we find out the person was really a townie. Then, the Mafia kill. We lynch another townie. And so on and so forth, until the Mafia kill us all."

The new person says, "If you all died last time, how are you alive now?"

The old timer says, "Didn't you ever see Pushing Daisies? Or Battlestar Galactica? Or Heroes? There's tons of explanations. But I'm tired and don't feel like making any of them right now."

The new person continues, "Fair enough. But, why can't we lynch Mafia."

The old timer thinks for a moment and finally responds, "Well, theoretically, I suppose we can. It just hasn't happened before."

Finally, the votes are read.

The town wakes up after a relatively short rest. It just seemed like a nap. Of course, another body appears in the town square. Bet you didn’t see that coming!

Someone says, “You know. This is kind of like CSI. We look at the bodies and try to determine who the how the person died. Have we ever thought about applying modern forensics to this? I mean, I think we got into such a frenzy about lynching people that we ignored some obvious signs in front of us.”

The town just looks aghast at the body.

Someone continues, “For example, what can we tell from this body? I find microscopic residue of doughnut powder around the lips. I know you can’t see it, but trust me, it’s there. And there are trace amounts of radiation coursing through the body, the kind you would find from a radar gun. What we have here is a cop!”

Someone beams for a moment proud about the depth of his analysis. Then, he thinks for a minute. A realization dims his countenance. “Oh, this can’t be good.”

Normally, this would be a tense time. But television has soothed all nerves. Who could possibly care about what was going on in the town when Lost and Battlestar Galactica started showing new episodes? The Fonz, had to miss some of the best shows to count the votes. Fortunately, there were only five votes.

The rules state that, if no one is granted immunity by the players, then immunity is randomly assigned.

I am probably going to suspend this rule for Day 5 since I don't want the outcome to be determined by a random assignment, which could happen.

After Skruffs found himself counting the votes, he did a dance of joy. His brain almost exploded. He was locked away in a dank room which was used for the tallying of the votes. The room had no television, but Skruffs could not have written a better script. Skruffs said, “I can make the votes say whatever I want! Now, should I get farside lynched and kill The Fonz tonight or lynch The Fonz and kill farside tonight?”

But then Skruffs got philosophical. “But I’ll be the only one left alive. How will I cope?” Then, as if sent from some divine force, a pamphlet floated through an open window. It advertised great rates for DirectTV with all the HD channels. “Life is good!”

Some quick notes. I think the format for this game was interesting, but I don’t think I would do it again. I think that the fact that people weren’t voting in the thread killed the discussion a little. The immunity thing was an attempt to give people something to talk about, but it didn’t work as well as I’d hoped. So, thanks for bearing with me in this experimental format. I hope you guys had fun.

I have the night choices at home and will post them later. Akonas, if he survived one more night, could have potentially broken the game open, as he may have had innocent results on two or three living players.

The game was almost cracked open on Night 2. Qman wasn't sure if he could target the person with immunity with his kill. He basically said that, if he could kill Akonas, he would. If not, he would kill Shanba.

If Akonas lived that night, he could have claimed cop and been able to clear Mgm, farside22 and Holy. It would have almost guaranteed victory for town.

Why Akonas didn't use his immunity votes to point out his innocent investigations (except for Day 1), I'll never know. If he cleared farside22 before dying, the last couple days of this game would have been altered dramatically.

When you are immune, the other two people can only vote for each other. Ergo your vote is the deciding vote. No matter who you voted for, it would result in a win. Once you got immunity town was toast.

Exactly. I saw no point going through the voting phase again. The Fonz and farside could only vote for each other. Skruffs would vote for one of them, get them lynched and then night kill the other.

Since victory was inevitable, there was no point playing things out.

Yeah, I thought Shanba was pretty obviously the politician too. I think you made a good call by killing him, though, Qman. If he stayed alive in a lynch or lose situation (and had a good read on the game), then he could have been extremely powerful.

You had a good read on this game, though. I think, as early as Day 3, you had Qman and Skruffs pegged as the final two scum.

Skruffs did have the huge advantage that Ibby and Gorgon both gave very little information. He came in with almost a fresh start.
