The house rule we have for betrayal is that if we end up with a fucking awful Haunt that no one likes, we check to see what other haunts correspond with the omen drawn, and if we can play any of those.

Mystery Express
is good. Takes the Cluedo mechanic of recording which locations/suspects/etc you've seen but muddies it by having two of everything except for the real answers and then forces you to constantly shuffle cards around the table. I owned this game for the longest time and tried to get people to play it and never could get enough people at once. So if there's a VASSAL mod or something for this, I would be down to play this instead of BSG the next time we have a free weekend.

Sherlock Holmes was a gift for myself I ordered back in July. It took until like Mid December to arrive, because of shortages. The game is not well stocked :P.

GreyICE is a huge advocate of Mage Wars. It's a good game, I think you'll enjoy it.

Also, once I'm done with Sherlock Holmes, I'll probably sell it or ship it around to friends. I could potentially turn my copy into a "hey mafiascum wanna pass around this copy and get maximum use out of it?" copy, but I'll need to think on that once I'm done all the mysteries.

Betrayal on first playthrough was kind of rough, as I'd only played it once and the people I was playing with hadn't played at all. But I think it's a game that gets better after you've played it a couple times. I was the traitor, and my banshee got wrecked in two rounds due to luck unfortunately.


Betrayal needs the advice I gave about Tales. Get drunk, play it like a story game, have fun.

So I played a new game yesterday!

Tragedy Looper
: If you've seen Higurashi or Mirai Nikki or Stein's Gate or any story with time travel and murder, that is this game. The object is that in each scenario (there are 10 in the book and more online) there is one played who plays the Mastermind, and the other 1 to 3 players take control of the 3 protagonists who are trying stop a "terrible event". The game involves managing the paranoia levels of the main characters in the plot, while also creating good will with the characters to use their special abilities (some of which remove paranoia, or do other interesting things.) The mastermind has full access to all the information in the game. They know what all the roles of the players are, and what outcomes will lead to "bad ends" that will lose the game for the protagonist teams.

The game is played in a series of "loops". Each loop has a certain allotment days before the tragedy ends, and on certain days, the protagonists know that certain events are meant to happen (Whether that be a murder, a suicide, a bomb exploding, a poisoning at the hospital etc.) To win the game, the protagonists must survive a whole loop, without meeting any of the "bad end" conditions that lose them the game, or dying themselves. (there are characters and things that involve the protagonists dying, which ends the loop). The mastermind wins if he can trigger game losses for the protagonists in ALL the loops, and the protagonists don't know all the pieces of the puzzle (i.e What each character's role in the tragedy is, be in serial killer, key person, loved one etc.)

The game can be played as a bare bones mechanical game, and ignore the little bits of flavour, but the game is full of it. Every protagonist has a different tool for going back in time (one has an app on their phone, another has a magical diary). It doesn't make a functional game play difference, but it does allow you to imagine the protagonists as different people with unique personalities. Same for the characters on the board. There are only so many possible characters (though there is enough variance that the faces on the board do not get stale), so you will see certain characters as a potential killer one game, and then maybe as a really useful and helpful person the next. Each case really does capture the feeling of different time streams and events turning people into different kinds. Given the mastermind has all the information, the game instructs him not to give away anything when he tells the players that the loop ends, but once a case is over, for one side or another, it's always fun to reveal the story that was written with it (that only the mastermind can see.)

All in all, a really fun deductive reasoning game. I recommend it to everyone on this site, because I think mafia players would enjoy this quite a bit.

If you want to mix up the style of game, I would suggest a Matt Lecock game. Forbidden Island or Pandemic are great for beginners and have a ton of replay.

Yeah. And I suggested Matt Lecock ones, because they tend to not include a traitor mechanic, which is good for beginners. I'd prefer Forbidden Desert over Island, as it doesn't have the feelbad of immediate game loss due to board state.
Roll for the Galaxy has also seen a lot of play in my group, and it's easier to get into than Race.


Funny story. When I was at Miami meet, Faraday, KittyMo, Mina, Kanye, Tierce, Shadoweh, Jerry, Tammy and I played about 20 games of Forbidden Island on the hardest difficulty. We swapped people up at different times depending on who was awake. I think we lost a total of 1 game ( and that was the first one, when I was teaching people who hadn't played before).

After that, it's a mostly solvable game (even if it gets REALLY close on impossible). Infact, it's only really any fun on Impossible.

If you're thinking about getting the expansion, get it for the different scenarios. The different events that can occur during each round in the different scenarios make the game so interesting.

Like the Assassins scenario, where you can basically pay to kill off voters.

I agree 100% with this, and one of the joke saying GreyICE and I have is "Every game is a social deception game".

Five Tribes is brilliant because the Mancala mechanic allows for people to make moves that screw people over, and the bidding mechanic on turn order allows for further diplomacy.

So yeah, I'm a big fan of games where talking is encouraged. Not a big fan of games or players who try to limit that, as a general rule.

The Waterdeep expansions are cool. It's a lot harder to get screwed via running out of spaces, which makes it easy to forgive any way they could be seen as monopolizing the main game.

Now that it's mentioned I don't think I've seen many games with visually distinct pieces. Basically, Argent (which has a different visual distinction problem).

Highly recommend that if you buy Escape you at MINIMUM buy Curses and Treasures, but the big box actually is the best value for sure.

Have had it for years. Have all expansions. Game is amazing. The base game will give you 10 different mysteries to play, plus the base set game to play a bunch of online fan mysteries. The expansions also each come with 10-12. There are currently 2 english expansions.

Game's great. 1 v all is fun, playing Mastermin and Protagonist is fun. Replay value if you play as Protag and then you can play as Mastermind for your friends.

It's just a metric shit ton of fun if you like deduction games with cool stories.

I did not, because all 4 other players conceded to me on year... 12, as the election ended. The score after that round was going to look something like me at 19 points and my closest opp. at 12? 13? and everyone else between 9 and 10?

Essentially, I won Tammany and 2 other districts on Green for 4 points and won mayor on a tiebreaker (all 5 players had 3 wards, and no one had more than 6 support tokens, of which all 6 of mine were Green) to score 7 round 1 to everyone elses 3. Then, round two, I managed to hang on to the same 3 wards I had held prior for another 4 points to go to 11. The scores that round were 11, 10, 6, 5, 5 (the 10 player won mayor). Then I won 5 Wards because of how bidding shenanigans went down and how I'd manipulated things, to score 5+3 for 8 to go to 19 and people conceded on the spot. I think the scores were going to be 19, 13, 9, 7, 7.

I do want to play it again but I think I'd rather do it with just 3 players since I really don't think half+ of the players that go round would be okay with it going that long again, and although I'd like it to be a little shorter than it was too artificially shortening the game felt p. bad.
Every new player at the table increases the time in the game by about 20%. It's really non-negotiable. It's not a matter of learning the rules beforehand either. It's the time spent reading the action cards, knowing the interactions, knowing the planets, knowing the agendas and what the strategy cards do.

6 players with all experienced players takes about 5-6 hours. 4 players with all experienced takes about 4-5.

I am unsurprised your newbie laden game took 9 hours, but don't let that poison the well for you. Seriously.

There is a lot of combat intricacy but it's not the best no.

But the expansion has a bunch of fixes for it and sure yes it's rolling dice but in general I am confident about who will win most combats already, and this only helps.

Yea, it recited everything for us, it just seemed like with only 1 day phase there was so little to go on or talk about. I tried to claim my role, but everyone else thought that was a bad idea, but what else is there to talk about? If I was a wolf, and everyone did claim, I have no idea what I should claim.

I think one of the roles I had, I was supposed to switch 2 players cards, but how is that a pro town move?

At the end I was tempted to try and run a game of mafia with just townies and mafia, but I have no idea how I would have done that with 5 people and no mod, so we moved on to Catan.

We all just played Avalon a few weeks ago, and I think we were stuck on that type of play, this could be our problem.
ONUW is a logic puzzle game where you don't know if you're scum anymore even if you drew scum initially. Players lie and make fake claims then real claims, because IIRC all abilities must be used.

It's basically a mess of a game that isn't really a game but if you have some drinks in you can be a bit fun.

actually, now i think about it, if you can find a version at a convention or borrow from someone else or a game library then go ahead and play it a few times with players who have never played before (that's the key).

Because beyond that the game is broken in half if you've run any strat analysis on it and it's pretty miserable optimally as a result.

yeah, there's a split in that somewhat but i also take small (very small) reservation with the term min max cause people used it as a bad word in TTRPGs and rightly so to some extent but this is a strategic game so using optimal strategies is fun.

The issue is, uh, there's only one optimal strategy. Hiding as traitor is pointless, you should be openly sabotaging and trying to get the team to exile you so you can take the catapult action every turn. Or draw a million cards until you find the 1 card that lets you reveal as traitor

then take the catapult action every turn

it's p. nuts

but yeah like, if you have a group who doesn't lean towards like, that kind of play have fun! Though, if you don't do that it's near impossible for the traitor to win, actually, so >.> but that's assuming town does good plays too and

the game is a bit of a mess there's lots of better games like it, i admit.

One game I picked up on the cheap I am excited to play is Fog of Love, which seems extremely thematic to the point it seems more story-telling vehicle with game elements than the opposite.
Shadows was one of the first hidden traitor games, and it's a hard road to walk. Mafia just eliminates traitors, but when they have to stay in the game you need compelling things to do when you're hidden, and compelling things to do when you're revealed. On the other hand I just don't know how playtesting didn't catch it. Removing a catapult is so difficult that they're essentially an endgame timer mechanic. Speeding up the endgame timer is both the best thing you can do (because it very directly puts pressure on everyone) and also the only worthwhile choice a revealed traitor gets, so they're kind of a "place catapault" bot, which is a role a drinking bird could replicate.

Unfathomable is a bit more complicated, but a great hidden role game.

OTOH I can't sing the praises of Quest highly enough. Completely replaces Resistance in every single way for me. Simpler, but also much less arguing and much, much less voting (as in none). Also has the most hilarious thing of regularly having the town outnumbered by scum, and yet the scum still having to play like scum.
