I think the popularity contest feel is doubled and tripled when the whole community votes; that means that a large amount of people vote based on who they like best. The strength of the judge system is that you have a smaller group of people who are far more dedicated and are at least obligated with reading and familiarizing themselves with games and players.

If you're also looking for a better outlet to voice concerns, would probably bring it to the ideas thread instead of here.
