Oh we've been thinking of maybe a 'Funny thing' type award instead of funniest roleclaims (that could include but not be limited to roleclaims)

It has the positives of funniest role claim without limiting it as much.

I also expect someone to bring up Losing Cause. No.

I don't really like the idea of Sharing Scummies as a rule - there could be exceptions but for the most part I guess the judges should make a decision.

We already have enough idiots who think they can gambit - let's not encourage it even more with a scummy.

It is kind of like that except it doesn't limit it to one post? So a funny exhange would be eligible?

Hmm - not sure judging funny moments against good play works? It's even harder to judge than judging which role claim/role use is best. I think I'd limit Best Moment to things like role usage/role claims/other things I can't think of?

Perhaps ex scummy winners could be given ballots as well, as well as any site mods. Basically create an academy of the scummies. You get a wide diverse group of people who have votes, which nullifies the popularity contest aspect of a) the nomination process (which is really the worst part of the whole thing) and b) the small sample and biases of the tiny group of scummies judges.

*shrug* I don't know. My problem with the nomination process is that not everyone bothers to nominate at the moment. I generally think those that are nominated

deserve it - but not all of those deserving get nominated, if that makes sense? I mean I don't really think nominations are done on popularity, for the most part. There's usually a strong foundation backing most of the noms. I don't actually think the wrong people win a large % of the time, I mean there are exceptions but generally from the pool nominated I go 'It'll probably be X/Y' and it usually is.

I'm probably not understanding your system right at the moment but: Is it that only these ballot holders would decide what was judged scummy worthy? So they'd propose it to the rest of the group and they'd all read it?

Well, when I conceived of it, it was as an additional award, which would essentially be awarded to anyone who broke a certain threshold in both a minimum number of nominations and percentage of games nominated. I guess it wouldn't work as a way to deal with the current awards.

Hmm, I don't think your idea is a bad one it's require a lot of work.

Basically the mod would submit those he felt performed best in the game? At the end of the year you'd look at those who had multiple good performances/consistnetly good as either alignment and it'd be between those? Does help those that play more games (you'd probably have to check games nominated/games played to have some sort of useful metric, really). The logistics of such a thing concern me - I also think that there are certain mods who I'd not particularly trust to do a good job, but then again you could probably weed that out by the judging process.

This is my biggest problem with the current system. I'm not sure if your system fixes it, either. I unfortunately can't think of a way it *can* be fixed. Some people don't tend to nominate stuff for scummies so certain people playing well go unnoticed.

Eh. Your system has merit, there's obviously no perfect solution (sadly). Too tired to think through the cons of what you're proposing now tho'.

Yeah, but we had a GD award a few years ago that flopped.

P.s. which of the current awards work/don't work? 2013 thread will be up in a while. Is there anything that's wrong (Personally smooth operator doesn't work but that's being...remedied I think, as discussed). I like Rising Star and feel it does a better job than Best Newbie/Most Improved.

I think being good, if not 'the best' (tm) in every category is still an achievment. Specifically since it seems to incorporate both modding and playing. I kinda get the feeling in practise it might just have the same nominees as Don/Paragon, as I'm skeptical about how many people truly nominate for the body of work (even if the eventual winner does tend to have a very good body of work)

I'd say no. The year they end in is just a clearer cut off point. The judging's already started, the only real reason there's a grace period for noms is that people are lazy/tend to forget to nom stuff and it's a 'last chance'. There'll not be a grace period this year, at any rate. I (personally) prefer the rule the way it is, as it's much clearer than 'whenever we decide to set a deadline for nominations'.

End of year cut off is better, that way you don't get noms from the same ending date in 2 different years nominations. Which is just weird. I mean it's only a day in the difference, but still.

It's more like 15 months, scummies ceremony is usually up in March.

In post 0, The Fonz wrote:So here's the thing. There is a best setup award, but it typically goes to pretty complicated closed setups that are super fun once, but, by the nature of the beast, can't be re-played.

Meanwhile, we have the Open queue, which is a fun and overlooked area of the site. There are also a number of smaller open games being played in the Micro Queue. Creating a new open setup which proves to be fun and balanced can benefit the site, and indeed the game of mafia beyond it (consider smalltown, the various C9s and E7s for example) for years after as the new setup can become a 'standard.'

Therefore, I propose we add a new category 'Best New Open Setup' to honor those who come up with ideas which enrich the game of mafia in this way.

Quoting Fonz post from his thread.

I think awarding people for innovative open set-ups is good? We have one for best set-up which is best closed set-up, basically. So um yeah, I think it's a good idea.

I think that has some merit. Hm.

I kind of like it but let me think. It does stop the "Hey nice mechanic but you used it in a crap set-up" thing that's possible if winning best mechanic (in theory) but I'm worried Smooth Operator/Best theme game/best normal game all become not like ridiculously different. Eh.

Yeah, the designer(s) of an open would win, obviously. That's fine, anyway.

I think Smooth Operator is already a "Moderator Excellence" award looking at the current description, so that's fine. (And it's BOW)

reck's idea is just basically "it's a scummy but not really so no badges", idk being in an enjoyable game is enough for me as a player, i don't need a badge to say it? let the mod just have it, it looks silly with everyone running around with favourite game badges i think

I would prefer if hydras were ineligible for Paragon/Don and a "Best Hydra" award was created. Judge it on whatever subjective criteria you want, like Rising Star. Hydras would be eligible for things like Best Third Party/Most Memorable Moment still, but the 2 "main" awards should be based on single player skill, in all likelyhood. (I mean, I don't think I'd ever see myself wanting a hydra to win one of those "Big two",
anyway
.

Also really don't think
this
would be a problem. There are a lot of hydra, I could see a similar amount or more of noms than say, Rising Star.

Nah, it's enough work trying to work out who deserves it. :P

Er, that's already a thing. Nothing *has* to be given out. Although I think it does rarely happen that something isn't given out.

Relatively normal theme games are probably going to be ignored, with that.

In post 480, zoraster wrote:I know this might be controversial, but because the Best Mutation/Mechanic is so often a large theme (only once has it been awarded to a Mini, Magua's original Marketplace Mafia),
Is this a problem? How often has best setup also gone to large themes? (I think if that was also high it might be worth looking in to?). A large is more likely to try new mechanics, because they're hard to fit in small games.

Not that it really matters, I think best setup is fine as is, is my point.

It's been discussed before, a decent amount. My own particular feeling is that it's just part of playing well - and feels a bit too specific. I suppose something like a godly display of vigging/doccing could also go into most memorable moment.

Please continue to suggest stuff, most of it is at least discussed seriously behind the scenes even.of we don't end up doing it.

I dont think judging is objective. I mean everyone has different criteria for what good play is, after all.
