I think Romo's going to stay unsigned into training camp at the earliest. He's 36, and turns 37 in April. He's played all 16 games 4 times in his career, and not since 2012. He didn't play particularly well in his last extended game action. I don't think he's going to rush into training camp for a bad team, and there's no way a good team is going to want him unless they're panicking because a starter goes down a la 2016 Vikings. I'm thinking he waits to see if a good opportunity opens up and if it doesn't, either takes a back-up job with a contender so he can get a ring, retires, or stays unsigned going into the season in case a QB goes down.

During the regular season, Boswell has missed one extra point in 2 seasons (62/63), and is 50/57 over that time, including a single miss under 40 yards. Heinz Field is also notoriously bad for kickers because of the wind (and historically, the shitty playing surface, although they've vastly improved that over the last 5-10 years). That, and the fact that it's mathematically advantageous to go for two more often than conventional, conservative football wisdom (choosing when to go for 2 is Tomlin's strongest area as a football coach, imo) is why the Steelers go for two more than most teams. Kicker isn't a problem there, and the Steelers have bigger needs.

Edit: Also, the Steelers recently re-signed him, so...

Cruz is a slot receiver, he underperformed last season because he was asked to play outside more. In the right kind of offence (the Patriots, for example, where they run 4 receiver sets a lot and orient their offence to making passes in the middle of the field, thus making slot receivers a more important part of their game), he could still put up a 1,000 yard season. On most teams, he's going to be a third option, even if players ahead of him on the depth chart get hurt.

I didn't say he could do it on the Patriots, I cited the Patriots offence as an example of the type he could put up 1,000 yards in. Although, rumor has it that Amendola might be cut if he doesn't restructure his contract, and as a bigger receiver than both of them, Belichick and McDaniels are perfectly capable of tweaking their offence to take advantage of that fact. Put together with the fact that Gronk will likely get hurt (he's played the full regular season twice in his career, and hasn't done it for 5 years) and Edelman played 16 games twice in his career, and I wouldn't dismiss the possibility that Cruz could do it.

RB talent you can wait on until after the draft, anyway - nobody other than Le'Veon Bell is getting paid this off season, so you might as well wait and see what falls to you in the draft before deciding to sign one of the free agents.

Pats biggest need is at LB, assuming Hightower leaves. Sheard needs to be replaced, and Ninkovich is getting on so I wouldn't be surprised if they draft an OLB or two, maybe in the later rounds to groom as Ninkovich's successor and take some snaps off him to keep him fresh. DB's not an urgent need, but since Butler seems likely to leave after this season, at least developmental talent is likely to be picked up there. D-Line's been taken care of in free agency. Allen's a better TE than Bennett, imo, so they upgraded there. With Vollmer gone, depth at tackle's needed, and I'd like to reinforce the G position. White and Lewis are fine at RB, but maybe add a bigger body in there. QB is only a need if Jimmy G. gets traded.

I'm not sure I'd agree with that characterization of the Pats moves. All the players they've acquired thus far are no older than 27, iirc, so it's not like they're picking up veterans with a couple of years max left. Rather, they're picking up guys who're entering their prime and have plenty of years left. I think it's more a reflection of how they see the talent in this year's draft, at least in their positions of need.

I think Jimmy stays, personally.

The way things sound coming out of the Patriots right now make me think there's a distinct possibility of Jimmy going into next season as the Pats starter. They've shown they're willing to trade players that are about to be UFAs - look at Collins and Jones, for example - yet they're apparently unwilling to let Jimmy go.

He's also achieved pretty much everything there is to achieve in his career and has a wife who'd quite like him to retire while he's healthy enough to play with his kids and has been pressing him to retire for the last few years. The decision isn't necessarily just about what he wants. A quick Google search claims his net worth is $200m - his wife's is almost double that. He doesn't need to play football for the money, he wants to play football because he loves football.

As an aside, the Ed Bouchette bitch fit over Hightower choosing to return to the Patriots over the Steelers is fucking hilarious.

The bigger danger to the NFL is a Raider practice squadder with money troubles selling the info that, say, David Carr has a hurt throwing arm after getting hit the week before even if the team proclaims he's 100% to people involved in gambling.

That and the guy who's announced plans to set up a Raider-themed brothel...

David Carr's arm doesn't affect the Raiders though
Fine, Derek Carr, the point still stands.

In 2017, though, what honestly prevents this from already being an issue?
It doesn't, but it's a bigger risk in Vegas because of availability and legality. It's one thing to get involved with illegal gambling - when just associating with people involved with it could potentially end your NFL career - and quite another to get involved in legal gambling in a place where like half the population works in a gambling related field. After all, if the league can convict Tom Brady of deflating footballs without actual evidence that balls were improperly deflated or evidence of an actual conspiracy to commit the act, they can decide a player probably sold out information based on little more than association.

Comparing Cj2K to TD: CJ2K has 1,750 more rushing yards, almost double the receiving yards, one more fumble on like 600+ more touches and essentially the same yards per attempt (4.5 v 4.6) and total TDs (64 vs 65). Plus, his 2,000 yard season is arguably more impressive, since he did it on roughly 40 fewer touches and added another 500 yards from scrimmage in the passing game. All the while playing on offenses QBed by Kerry Collins, Vince Young, Old Matt Hasselbeck, Jake Locker, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith, Old Michael Vick, Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton, none of whom is exactly John Elway.

CJ2K also played in an era in which the running back position is less important than it's ever been. Right now, it's hard to justify putting one in over the other. But CJ2K hasn't retired yet, so it's possible for him to play a while longer and break the 10k yard mark, which in my opinion would give him a superior case to TD. Hell, he's less than 500 yards away, if he stays healthy and catches on with a team as a #2 RB this season he could well pass it this season.

I wasn't saying CJ2K should get in. In my opinion, he's a borderline case at best, even if he does reach 10k. Just using him as an illustration as to why TD doesn't deserve it.

(Also, Jamaal Charles wants to know why you snubbed him...)

I think Charles deserves it over half the guys in your post. 5.5 per carry is pretty special, and to have played as many snaps as he has with that average makes him a contender in my book.

If Jamaal Charles is healthy enough to recover his previous form, he's instantly the best back in the Broncos backfield. Good pick up.

It's far simpler than that. Greg Olsen and Thomas Davis want new contracts - Olsen because he's underpaid, Davis because his is expiring and he wants security - and Gettleman was an impediment to getting those done. Davis in particular is really close to Jerry Richardson, the owner. Also, there are stories coming out that he was an asshole behind the scenes.

Cutler with Gase isn't worst case.
The Dolphins were a play-off team last year, and although they had a woeful start, they went 9-2 over the last 11 games to finish 10-6. Tannehill was playing good football as he settled in to Gase's offence, and he's clearly better than Cutler. They didn't have any major losses in free agency, and they added some good parts (particularly Julius Thomas). I had them making the play-offs as a wildcard again. Not now.

Which is a fucking dumb way of thinking. The Pats are undoubtedly the favorites at this point, but they don't even have a 50% chances of winning the Super Bowl at this point.

Also, the Bills easily won that trade. Watkins may be better than Matthews, but only for the like 4 games he plays healthy, and Matthews is pretty reliable. Gaines for Darby is pretty much a wash. Plus they gain a second and third in exchange for a 6th. The Eagles got what they needed out of the deal, they have receiver depth and their secondary sucks, so Darby will help them more than the loss of Matthews. Not sure about the 3rd rounder, though, but the deal they made makes sense. The Rams are the losers - sure they get a sixth round pick, but they gave up a pretty decent cornerback and a 2nd round pick for the rights to put Sammy Watkins on injured reserve this season.

I have my doubts Zeke misses any time this season. When he loses (and he appears to have a substantially weaker case than Brady did) or gives up the court case, it's likely to be at least next season.

Did I simply miss something? Is there something the public doesn't know about that is damning against Elliot?

This entire saga of "will they or won't they" suspend Zeke came out of nowhere because there were barely whispers that these accusations were being taken seriously.

Like, I'm usually the last person to suggest questioning the claims of a victim of domestic violence, but this whole issue seemed to have considerably less basis for such a lengthy suspension compared to several other recent incidents.
Different standards of evidence. For a criminal conviction, they have to reach a standard of beyond reasonable doubt. Many cases that are not tried occur in instances when the DA or the police believe the crime took place, but don't have the evidence to prove it. Domestic violence is particularly prone to this because it often occurs in private, with no neutral witnesses and thus makes it a "he said, she said" situation that can be much harder to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. In this case, they record the prosecutor in his case as believing the victim. The CBA and NFL rules don't require the NFL to prove it to quite that standard (and they suspended Brady despite not even reaching that evidence threshold). It's like the OJ cases. He was found not guilty in the criminal case, but convicted in the civil case because their standards of evidence were different (beyond a reasonable doubt versus supported by the preponderance of evidence).

That is entirely believable because Ray Lewis is a totally trustworthy source who is totally secure with people mocking him and totally doesn't hold grudges.

Patriots wins. Jets management is trying to get the #1 seed, so in typical Jets fashion, that kinda disrespect is going to fuel the players to like 4-12 or 5-11 and like the third QB off the board instead, while I have the over/under for the Patriots win total at 13.5.

Don't forget, the Jets early schedule gives them the Bills, Jags and Browns in the first 5 games of the season. and the other two are against Oakland (who're clearly favored, but have a QB coming off a major injury) and the Dolphins (who have Jay Cutler at QB) - while they're clearly trying to tank, the players could get a chip on their shoulder and go into Week 6 against the Patriots with a winning record - and it's not beyond the realms of possibility they could win all of their first 5.

That's pretty much why I think they could win any number of the first five - the Bills, Jags and Browns all have issues on offense, and the Jets D is good enough to shut them down, so all they need is like 2 or 3 decent offensive series or defensive scores to be in with a shot of winning those games. Oakland has a pretty good offence, but we haven't seen Carr back in real game action, and after a serious injury, there's always a possibility of it getting in his head and ruining him like getting sacked so often did his brother. As for the Dolphins, it's always a coin-flip which Jay Cutler shows up and if they get the Bad Jay Cutler and he throws a casual 5 int game, then that's a potential wing based on defence, too. Not saying that will win all of them, but going 3-2 or 2-3 over that period isn't that much of a stretch, which would be a reasonable set up for a 4-12 or 5-11 season.

I'm fine. Not a great start to the season but nothing that can't be fixed. The big issue that swung the game was Hightower getting hurt which left Cassius Marsh playing after being a Patriot for like 5 days, and the Chiefs picked on him relentlessly. The Amendola injury hurt too, considering the Pats only had 4 healthy WR going into the game after Malcolm Mitchell went on IR, one of which also was a short term player (Phil Dorsett, acquired at the same time as Marsh). The Chiefs played really well, too (especially Eric Berry, who changed the game with that 4th down stop and was excellent until he left hurt). They really played physical coverage, and while they were penalized a lot for it, there were a number of instances where they managed to get away with it. Very effective, but I don't think it's a reliable strategy just for the risk of penalties. Brady had a mediocre game, but his first game back after the suspension last season was slow, too, and the issues with the receiving corps certainly contributed. Belichick gets a long week to get the newbies up to speed and maybe shuffle the roster to get players in to fill in the gaps, so I'll be reserving panic until after next week against the Saints.

Favorite stat of the NFL week: Tom Brady, 40 year old QB who ran a 5.28 40 at the 2000 scouting combine, rushed for 9 yards on 2 carries. Ezekiel Elliot, 22 year old alleged contender to be the best RB in the league and accused domestic abuser, rushed for 8 yards on 9 carries.

I'm not panicking until they're played divisional games, but the Pats defence is looking garbage. They're giving up way too many rushing yards, and the secondary is looking poor. It's frustrating, because theoretically Gilmore should have made the secondary better, but instead, paying him instead of Malcolm Butler seems to have put the holdovers into a funk, and Gilmore isn't exactly performing to his price tag either. Gotta fix it, or it'll be a disappointing season where, like, the Pats lose the AFC Championship game. :(

At least I can enjoy the Jets totally Jetsing up their attempts to tank for a QB in next year's draft.

I’m starting to think it’s coaching issue.

There's just no way everyone got bad overnight. There are multiple All-Pros, Pro Bowlers, and up and coming players on this team playing defense. On talent alone, this is an elite unit. We might have a coaching issue and Patricia needs to be held accountable. 4 straight weeks of bad defensive play. The coaching staff needs to fix this.
No. Patricia defences have typically given up more yards than you'd expect from their point totals - they operate under a "bend don't break" philosophy. In that respect they aren't doing anything radically different from previous years, scheme-wise and coaching-wise. The problems, however, are in player performances. The secondary is playing like garbage. The big acquisition, Gilmore, isn't playing well. They don't usually make those acquisitions, and it unsettled Malcolm Butler, who wanted out because they wouldn't pay him. I certainly have the sense from their play that this whole situation has unsettled the rest of them. Further, with the Collins trade last year and the retirement of Ninkovich, our ability to assert pressure up front has diminished, and we cut the guy who we traded for to replace their production (Kony Ealy). There have also been injury issues - when Hightower went down against the Chiefs, we had to put Cassius Marsh, who'd been with the team a whole 5 days, in at linebacker and the Chiefs picked on him mercilessly. None of these issues are on the coaching staff, they're on Belichik the GM.

My personal belief is that they'll give them 10 years or so in Los Angeles which gives them a reasonable chance to turn things around and lets the NFL blame the Chargers if they don't, then either let them stay if they're doing okay or ship them off to a place the league wants them to go if they're not. They've been putting on Raiders games in Mexico City, if the Mexican market is looking good at that point, then I could totally see them moving there, with a name change designed to appeal to the whole Mexican market.

Moving them sooner means admitting a mistake. The Chargers were a bad team last year. They were a bad team the year before. They're currently appearing to be a bad team this year. Their alleged franchise QB is almost at the end of his career. They'll get some time to rebuild since nothing helps build a fanbase like winning. Plus they're stuck in a temporary home until 2020, in a stadium that's not really designed for pro football. They won't be judged until they move into a proper stadium, with a proper capacity and the proper amenities expected of a modern football stadium.

The thing is, they actually are not that bad. They just get every single bad bounce. And it's not even close. They are 4-19 in single score games since the start of 2015. That's so far away from the average that it's kind of ridiculous.
They're also in a strong division, with KC, Denver and the Raiders. But you can't really call them a good team either. I guess I more meant that to the casual fan, they're perceived to be a bad team, which is more important that whether they are a bad team.

10 years is a lot of roster turnover, to be fair. The Patriots won the Super Bowl in 2004 and 2014, and the only player who was on both teams was Brady. But I don't disagree, it's just giving them time allows the NFL to put the blame for the Chargers failing in LA on the team rather than the league, which I would assume would be the league's objective.

On the one hand, I think the balance of evidence (which is the standard the NFL uses unlike the criminal justice system) suggests Ezekial Elliot is a shitbag and a domestic abuser, and thus don't have an issue with his suspension. On the other, it's bullshit he got the right amount of games and people like Josh Brown got away with one game for a much stronger evidence (but hey, he's a kicker and white, so it didn't get anywhere near the media attention), and I harbour an intense desire for Roger Goodell to be humiliated in court the way he should have been over the Deflategate debacle.

Can both sides be hit by a meteor? I like that option.

The bigger issue is not with the Pack starting Hundley, it's that they're going to be starting him while having a back up whose last meaningful non-preseason action was as in Division III for Wesley. Like, go with Hundley if you want, but surely you should bring in someone who has experience and you know can adequately do the job in the event Hundley gets injured. Knowing how these things go, they'll probably trade something to Indy for Scott Tolzien, who'll end up starting a second game as a further slap in the face to Kaepernick.

So, you'd go after a retired QB who's focused on broadcasting and thus doesn't have time to be working out or in shape (and has a very good chance of turning into a better broacaster than he ever was a QB) or two players who're currently injured ahead of Kaep?

He's a proven NFL caliber QB. At the very least, you're better off having at least one guy like that around to help the two unproven young kids they have on their roster right now. Also, he was actually decent last season despite having the 49ers roster around him.

In post 957, PJ. wrote:Kaep was not amazing. He's been average to slightly below average every year beside 2012. That being said, even saying he's a slightly below average STARTING QB means this guy should have a job and he'd definitely be one of the best if not THE best back up in the league. AND A HELL OF A LOT BETTER THAN BRANDON WEEDEN. That's honestly what convinced me that he has a case and that's what convinced me that he was indeed being blackballed. The guys Tennessee worked out were really some putrid level QBs and Weeden being the best of those really speaks volumes. "Here comes Brandon Weeden" are the most terrifying words in sports if he's on your club.

Also, I didn't get the hype to sign Kaep when they were gonna start Hundley until I saw that Bella post, so like, thanks bella.
I'm not saying he's the second coming of Tom Brady or anything, but based on last seasons stats and the garbage he had around him and bearing in mind he was running an offence that was notionally designed for Blaine Gabbert (who was benched for him yet somehow still has a job in the NFL), I'd argue that putting him anywhere in the 15-25 range in a list of Best Active QBs is entirely reasonable.

The Kaepernick thing is somehting I've seen brought up plenty of places, basically from the standpoint of a) he's a local and b) he's been really good against the Pack in the past. And, y'know, the clear best free agent QB available.
In post 958, T-Bone wrote:Hundley should get the start in Green Bay. He's been on the team for three years. He knows the playbook and presumably has a little bit of chemistry with the skill players. Even if Kaep is a better QB (which he is), knowing the playbook and chemistry with players is a HUGE advantage Hundley has over every other potential QB in the league. If GB were to bring anyone else to start, all they would be able to do is run basic plays.

Now you have to have a truly desperate situation to need Kaep (both starter and backup injured), because Kaep didn't go through camp, spring training, or the first 6 weeks of the season. He should have been on a roster from the get-go of course, but now I'm not sure he could help a team without some massive injuries to the position.
Who said anything about anyone being brought in to start at QB?
In post 959, Nero Cain wrote:Why did Kaep opt out of his contract?
Probably because he wanted a shot to start and the 49ers didn't want him.

fwiw, the argument that "Oh, he knows the system and the play book, that's way more important than being a better QB" doesn't really hold up. Look at the 2017 Colts, for example, Jacoby Brissett took Scott Tolzien's job after 30 minutes of football and liek a week on the roster, because Scott Tolzien is garbage and Brissett is vaguely competent and all the familiarity with the players and the playbook can't change that.

In post 969, T-Bone wrote:Well, we don't know that Hundley isn't a good QB like we know Tolizen is. (also Toilzen is like a million years old)

Also, did Brissett really play that well initially, or is he just riding the hype of *not* being Tolizen? He's gotten better as he's gotten more familiar with things sure.
Please stop strawmanning the argument. Nobody has said that the Packers should drop Hundley as starting QB. The point that's being made is that Colin Kaepernick would be a better back-up/potential replacement if Hundley shits the bed than a Division III QB.

Brissett was better than Tolzien, which is pretty impressive considering how late he was signed in the season, and has continued to be better than Tolzien.
In post 972, PokerFace wrote:I made a joke when I said call bradford or bridgewater. MIN are rivals with GB after all. Guess no one realized that

I'd rather have old Romo than old Kaep, but don't think Romo would go for it. They should see what they got in Hundley and maybe look into kaep if that fails.
Kaepernick is 29, or basically right in the prime QB years for anyone not named Brady.

Yeah, but the Eagles have a favorable schedule for the rest of the season, and the Giants and Cowboys look way weaker than last year, so the Eagles should still win the division. It's the playoffs you should be worried about.

Something I saw pointed out elsewhere is that a lot of the best pass rushers on their remaining schedule rush from the left of the D-line - against the right tackle - which means they might well be better off leaving Johnson at right tackle and putting Vaitai in at left tackle.

Yeah, likely they were trying to negotiate a 2/3-year or so deal with Jimmy G to cover the period before Tommy retires and couldn't agree terms, so they lowered their price. They still made out better than the compensatory pick if they'd let him go at the end of the season, and the 49ers get first crack at signing him to a long term deal., so it's good for both parties. Kinda surprising considering what they were saying about Beathard, though.

I mean, the Panthers could always just use McCaffrey as exclusively a WR. It's not like it'd be some great loss from their running game.

Also, in extremely Brownsian news, apparently they tried to trade for AJ McCarron, agreed a deal with the Bengals, the Bengals told the league office about it before the trade deadline... and the Browns were late and lol, no QB to save them from the Kizer/Hogan/Kessler mess.

The Browns story gets even better. They're claiming that it only failed to go through because they sent a document for the Bengals to sign, and that the Bengals sent the wrong version of it in that was only signed by one team and that's why the trade failed. Except, that's not how NFL trades are supposed to work, both teams have to independently inform the league office. So... either a) the Browns are so grossly incompetent that they royally fucked up the trade procedure or b) the Browns are so grossly incompetent that they can't even find a feasible way to blame the other side for their own fuck-up. Or c) both, I guess. Good job, Browns. The Jets may be Jetsing up their attempt to tank for the #1 pick, but nobody can out-Browns the Browns.

I buy it. It makes perfect sense that the Cowboys would be desperate for a running back now Zeke is going to miss at least one game, and hurting the Cowboys makes the Eagles run to the post-season even easier.

He's 31 and on $6.5m a year for this year and next, though. As a free agent, I'm sure there'd be plenty of people who want him. For trade? I don't see it. At least not on a deal that doesn't make it seem like the Giants got hosed.

His stats are pretty mediocre and have been for the past 2 seasons, plus he's a malcontent. I don't really fault the Bills for dropping Dareus.

Fair enough. He's still really good. Like his stats are dropping but they are dropping from being the best 2 years ago, y'know?
They dropped down to mediocre starter at best levels, though, and he can't blame it all on Rex Ryan's defence because he's on a worse pace this season. Given all the reports about him being a locker-room problem and a malcontent, I have a hard time seeing how he justifies his salary and justifies staying on the team. I don't think the trade makes Buffalo appreciably worse, and it gets rid of a potential problem before it can sink their play-off hopes.

Here’s the stat of the week. Quarterback Brock Osweiler will start for the Broncos on Sunday at Philadelphia. The Broncos will pay him $48,437 for his efforts. And the Browns will pay him $895,588.
I'm just going to leave this here and laugh.

Shea, did you watch the whole Giants game? I only saw the highlights on NFL Redzone and it certainly looked from those like that Giants have just straight up quit on McAdoo, especially the defence. Is that a misguided opinion based on a sampling of the plays, or was that reflected in the whole game?

I'm happy with Eli not starting, but I don't understand the decision to start smith over Webb. Like, its pretty clear Geno Smith isn't an NFL starting QB. But getting Webb reps has value if we're gunna give him a chance.
The worst thing is, Geno Smith isn't even under contract for next year - so if he somehow discovers how to be an NFL starting QB over the next two games, he can choose to take the biggest offer in free agency a la Mike Glennon to the Bears. There's literally no upside to playing Geno over Davis Webb unless you're blatantly tanking for the #2 pick. At least you'll be able to show the Jets how properly tank a season.

It's not quite that bad, at least Geno Smith isn't 35 like Weinke was in 2007.

Shea, why would Eli agree to the trade when it's basically a foregone conclusion that the Giants will cut him before the third day of the league year? I mean, the cap hit is what... $12.4m in dead money, which they can basically split over two years if they designate him as a post-June 1st release and they get $9.8m in cap space by cutting him and also avoid paying him a $5m roster bonus. That's not wonderful, but it's not so unmanageable that it's a better option than spending way too much money on an influential and probably disgruntled back up QB. Eli has all the power here.

Also, unpopular opinion but Eli isn't that great.
That's not an unpopular opinion, that's pretty much the consensus view of Eli. But being better than Geno Smith, whose best contribution to his team's offence was getting punched in the face so Ryan Fitzpatrick could start, doesn't require greatness.

Also, if that's the plan, why not just delay benching Eli for a week?

"Wasn't his fault" is putting it mildly, that was a reception that Murphy gave up to Kyle Fuller who just straight up put more effort in and ripped it out of his hands. If they'd ruled it a catch just to make sure the turnover goes down as a Murphy literally zero people would complain.

Let's play a game.

The Cleveland Browns have 4 games to get the one win that would ensure they avoid going 0-16 - Packers, Ravens, at Bears, and at Steelers in that order. Obviously, I don't mean to imply they will win any of those games, but which game do you think they're most likely to win?

I'd say conventional wisdom is the Bears, but my money is on the Steelers. Steelers will have likely clinched the #2 seed while being behind and losing a tiebreaker to the Patriots for the #1 seed (assuming the Pats beat the Steelers, which they'd be favored to do; the AFC West is a garbage division and will have the #4 seed, and I don't think the Jags or Titans are consistent enough to go unbeaten in the last four). The Steelers tend to play down to their opponents, they'll have nothing to play for in the final week of the season and will have an eye on the playoffs already. On the other hand, this will be the Browns last chance to avoid joining the 2008 Lions in the 0-16 club, and Hue Jackson may be coaching for his job. I think that's the setting for a dramatic upset. What do you guys thing?

Fair enough. It makes a lot of sense, though, since he worked there before he got the Carolina gig and jokes about drafting DT when there's a serious O-Line need aside, he did mould them into a 15-1 Super Bowl squad, so he didn't do that bad a job, even if Marty Hurney's fingerprints were still all over the roster. Plus, the guy who got him the Carolina job, Ernie Acorsi is consulting on the Giants search. I do think the weird line tendency should worry the Giants, though. Assuming they hire a GM before a coach, who's your preference for the job?

If Rodgers gets released at this stage, he goes on waivers. So in other words, he's a Cleveland Brown. Basically, if he's released, he retires.

The thing is, there's two separate issues with these calls: is the correct call being made in the end and whether the replay rules are being followed. People are spending too much time arguing over the first (which ironically is the one I think the NFL is getting right: per the laws of the game, the Steelers TD was called correctly in the end, and my personal opinion is the Benjamin didn't have the second foot down when he gained control of the ball, for example) and less about the second. The standards of replay are supposed to require "incontrovertible visual evidence" to change a call, with the assumption that the on-field call is right unless proven otherwise. That's clearly not happening. Too many calls are being relitigated by Al Riveron, and instead of finding definitive evidence that proves the call was wrong, he's looking at the play from scratch and deciding what he'd call with the benefit of camera angles and slow motion. That's unacceptable, and leads to stupid conspiracy theories that undermine the competitive integrity of football.

Right. I don't think it's malicious or anything, rather that the guy simply wants to get the right call. That's not how replay is supposed to work per the NFL's rules. If you want to go in that direction, change the rules so I can go back to tuning out people who're convinced not catches are catches when the rules are pretty clear that it's not a catch and blaming biased officials and conspiracy theories when they should just be mad that the rules on what is and isn't a catch are pretty unsatisfactory.

Also, the way their teams have played without them is evidence that Jimmy G and Deshaun Watson are MVP contenders.

I think that case is stronger in Garoppolo's case, because the Texans weren't consistently winning even with Watson playing and the myriad other injuries the Texans had. But the difference between the Jimmy G-led 49ers and the Beathard/Hoyer 49ers is like night and day. They were Browns-level woeful until he took over - the race for the #1 pick was a three horse race between those two and the Giants - and now they could pick outside the top ten because they've won every game he's started and are on the longest win streak in the NFL.

I don't see how the Steelers overcome the biggest weapon the Patriots have when facing them. They certainly didn't have an answer last time.

No, I'm talking about coaching. That was the definitive difference in the last game. The Smith-Schuster non-catch didn't decide the game. There were 28 seconds left and the Steelers were in relatively easy field goal range. At a minimum they should have been able have a chance to force overtime, and even if they were taking the snap back at the 10, Boswell's 22/22 on FGs under 30 years on his career, and his missed only 3 extra points (though two this year), so there's an extremely high chance they make it. Instead, Tomlin and his staff blew it by first taking a passing play that stayed in bounds, letting the clock run, and then throwing a fake spike into a crowd around the only Steelers player who was actually trying to get to the endzone. The accounts of Roethlisberger and the coachign staff after the game paints a picture of total disarray. They didn't know what to do, screwed it up and all the while the Pats were calm, collected and ready for the trick play. That's the kind of difference coaching makes, and that's why the Patriots are 7-2 and on a five game winning streak against Tomlin's Steelers. Which probably explains the decision making, actually, since Belichick apparently lives in Tomlin's head.

Besides, even if the Smith-Schuster non-catch had been incorrectly called a TD, the Pats had 28 seconds and two time outs, so they were perfectly capable of winning the game anyway.

This and the fact that they have a tendency to look past opponents when they have games against the Pats coming up are why I'm not sure they'll make the AFC title game.

I think the AFC playoffs go

KC > TEN
BUF > JAX

KC > PIT
NE > BUF

NE > KC

NFC:

LAR > ATL
CAR > NO

MIN > LAR
CAR > PHI

MIN > CAR

Superbowl:

MIN > NE

That'd make the Vikes the first team to win a Super Bowl in their own stadium.

This has never actually happened, unless you count last year against a decent Dolphins game where Ben got hurt in what I believe was the third quarter but okay whatever you say. They also don't play down to opponents in the playoffs but sure.
They literally spent a couple of weeks this season talking about the Patriots when they had a divisional game (Ravens I think, but don't quote me on that) coming up that they almost lost.

They don't tend to play down to their opponents in the play-offs because they play good teams in the play offs.

Like, I know you hate the Steelers, and yes, the Patriots own us throughout the years, and I fully expect to lose to them in the championship game, but stop spouting untrue narratives.

Come on, Scot, it wasn't just one Tomlin interview. It was several, not to mention various players. Plus, look at how they've reacted to James Harrison signing with New England. There's a psychological effect there that you can't deny.

(Also, it's only really in the Brady/Belichik era that the Steelers have been the Patriots' bitches - the Pats only took the lead in the overall series (16-15) after the last victory, and prior to Brady/Belichik the Steelers lead the series 12-5)
PokerFace wrote:Panzer said something about Peterman might be starting, Bella. Did Tyrod get hurt again?

If Tyrod and McCoy are back at top of game, Bills could win. If either is out or injured, the game is out of their reach. Jaguar defense doesn't rely on only two players like the bills offense does
Tyrod Taylor's not even listed on their injury report and he finished the Dolphins game just fine.

My thought that the Bills will beat the Jaguars is not based in any way on the Bills being a good team, it's based on my expectation that the Jaguars will somehow fuck this up. I fully expect it to finish like 10-9 and accurately be shit on as the worst playoff game in history.

The Pats run game is better then you expect - 10th in yards, 12th in YPA, 6th in TDs and have only fumbled four times and lost 2 of them - they're statistically a better rushing team than the Steelers this season. They just have a large committee in the backfield so they don't have a standout name, but Dion Lewis is averaging 5.0 yards per attempt and leads the team in attempts (180) and yards (898). Plus, they're all dangerous in the passing game, too.

Besides, if you look at the stats, most of the difference between the Pats and the Bills in terms of rushing is down to a) McCoy shouldering more of the burden for the Bills and b) Tyrod Taylor is a much more rushing orientated QB than Tom Brady.

How the fuck is Jeff Triplette refereeing a play-off game? From the forward progress call negating the Mariota sack-fumble to the (arguably) multiple errors on the Mariota-Mariota TD (whether he was beyond the line of scrimmage is very debatable and I personally think he was but it's a close call, but his fuck up when explaining it that Mariota was an eligible reciever because he was in the shotgun when it didn't fucking matter because the DB touched the ball), this game is as badly handled as his regular season work.

On the other hand, I kinda liked that they showed the video Brad Johnson sent John Gruden on his cellphone rather than just properly showing the play.

Hey man, I already said in this thread that it wasn't a catch (ball hit the ground and he lost control of it) but it shouldn't have been overturned based on the NFL's replay standards.

Also, I seem to have way overestimated when I predicted Bills winning 10-9.

DeCastro said after the game that this was absolutely an issue the team has, by the way. He seemed pretty upset about it to me, and Tomlin's approach encourages it. Tomlin and his staff arguably blew yet another game with questionable decisions and a seeming lack of preparedness at key moments of the game, particularly at the end of the halves. Honestly, I think at some point you have to consider whether he's getting the most out of the talent he's got. I think he's an anchor around the neck of the team, and if I was Steeler ownership, I'd at least consider replacing him. Also, what the fuck was with that spit on his beard, there was a gob of it clearly visible for at least the whole second half.

I'd take the Vikings in a close one, personally. The defence is a step above and Keenum > Foles makes the difference for me.

I can't pick the Pats game. My head says the Pats are a better, more versatile team with more experienced and with better coaches who won't choke the game away. My pessimist, paranoid heart is periodically screaming "JAGS WIN JAG WIN JAGS WIN". Basically, I'm living in a perpetual state of BORTORTLEphobia, and that's not a healthy place to be right now.

I'm surprised the NFL hasn't announced it's investigating the end of the Vikings/Saints game because of the kneel down on the extra point at the end, to be honest. After all, it made a significant difference to the fate of hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars worth of bets, and people have been convicted of fixing much smaller things in other sports. It's the kind of decision that warrants some kind of check that it's on the up and up. Also, Goodell hasn't come down hard on someone without evidence or justification recently, and this seems the perfect opportunity to wrongly screw someone.

This seems completely reasonable tbh. I hadn't thought about it before, but that kneel could definitely have been dirty
I'm not saying it was - I just think they wanted to get the fuck out of there because the game was over but the extra point was mandatory - but given the documented evidence of how poorly players manage their money and how relatively low-paid specialists and special teams players are (and some coaches, for that matter, especially compared to the top college equivalents), it's totally believable that something nefarious could have gone on. Especially because it didn't affect the outcome of the game, just whether they covered the spread or not.

it should be done away with

Of course, if it'd been closer, it could actually have mattered, since a blocked extra point can be returned for a 2 point conversion, so it's not a purely administrative exercise.

I don't know how you look at that replay and see him clearly bobbling the ball without having possession after he puts his left foot down the first time, see him put his left foor down the second time out of bounds and uphold the call that it was a touchdown. That was not a TD. It was CLEARLY not a TD. That's a call made because people accused the league of favoring the Patriots when Riveron was fucking up his replay standards and overturning calls that the evidence didn't support (even though they were correct), and it's an awful call. Jesus Christ.

There's definitive video evidence that shows you it's not a catch., It's precisely the type of play that should be over turned. Ball still moving, no control, foot steps out of bounds. It's textbook no catch.

GG Eagles. Bad call on the TD aside, which didn't in the end really impact that result, the bigger difference was special teams mistakes. The 4 dropped points would have changed the approach to the game, I think.

If I'm John Dorsey right now, I'm calling the Eagles and saying "Hey, you want the #4 overall pick in exchange for Foles?". Super Bowl winning backup-QB for a high first round pick is a good deal for both teams.

Except that's not how the rules work. You need clear indisputable evidence to overturn the call on the field. That play was borderline, and when that happens, you defer to the call on the field.
Yes, which there was. It was another bad call in a series of bad calls by Riveron.
In post 1952, drealmerz7 wrote:they aren't going to trade Foles
Philly has zero cap room, and spending over $7m on a back up QB is a luxury. They also have very few draft picks in this draft and acquiring more is a good way to get talented players at relatively cheap cap cost. Carson Wentz is their guy, and football teams hate distractions, so they'd likely prefer to avoid a QB controversy every time Wentz has a poor game. Foles isn't getting any younger, has earned a shot at starting and there's no better time to try to get paid than after you won the Super Bowl MVP. It makes too mush sense for the Eagles to trade him.

Why on earth would you give the #4 pick for Nick Foles? He had what? 2 good games? By all means give him some credit for taking over and leading philly to this, but he had an amazing supporting cast as well and there's nothing that tells me that something drastic changed over these past two games that made him worthy of that high of a pick.
Let's not pretend 2013 didn't happen, and really outside of 2015 is the Rams, which was a bad team, he's been a pretty good QB. The Eagles collapse in 2014 arguably came about because Foles was hurt.Last year he was pretty good in relief for KC, and in 2017 he got better as he got more time with the starters, culminating in a Super Bowl MVP. Foles is worth the #4 pick to the Browns. He'd instantly become the best QB they've had since returning tot he league, and his status as Super Bowl MVP sends a message that can attract free agents to Cleveland, which you need all the help you can get with. Plus, you can then use the #1 pick on a non-QB or dangle it at teams like Denver, the Jets or Arizona (whichever of that group of teams doesn't win the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes and get yourself a haul of picks and/or players to strengthen the team with.
In post 1988, shaft.ed wrote:Also why aren't we discussing how dirty they did Malcolm Butler?
Can you imagine him riding the pine through that debacle, and by his coaches refusal to play they are just over and over saying "Do you see how bad this defense is? It's historically bad. But we think it would be even more bad if you were on the field"

That dude's gonna have a massive chip on his shoulder. I hope winds up in the AFC East so he can revenge on the Pats at least twice a year.
That's real confusing. It clearly wasn't injury related, since he was healthy enough to play special teams, and I can't imagine Belichik refusing to send him in just because he's rigidly sticking to the game plan (and the lateness of the decision suggests that they were preparing like he was going to play, which makes that less likely), so it must have been disciplinary related - and pretty serious to keep him out of the game considering how badly Eric Rowe was playing.

If only he showed up to the press conference, he could have basically done what Belichik did to the Jets...

Don't worry, Ed's being repalced by his son Shawn, so you'll still be able to get your Hochuli fix, it's just the younger and less swole version.

I mean, the inevitable PEG comment on Deshone Kizer is like half the reason I visited the thread...

The Browns made some real good moves, I think. If they get Barkley at #1 and their QB of the future at #4 and they can get whole training camps and seasons out of Garrett and Gordon, they could be a surprisingly good team next season.
