Let us solve the G.O.A.T for once and for all.

Mish-Mash has an ELO system to make a quantitative analysis of who is better in Survivor. College will not resume until February so I decided to make an ELO system for Mafia. I have gathered data from Newbie 1500 ~ Newbie 1699.

So the data is ready for the prototype. I want input for the algorithm. I will start coding after The Finals.

This is the algorithm. Knowledge of how ELO system works is assumed.

The AlgorithmEach player ELO starts with 1500.

We find the town ELO and mafia ELO by averaging the ELO of town players and by averaging the ELO of mafia players. We use K factor of 30 to analyze it. The amount of ELO won or lost is not based by individual ELO v team ELO, but team ELO v team ELO and the change is the same among all players from the same team.

For example: I have an ELO 1450. I happen to be town. However, when the town players elo is avaraged, the ELO is 1500. If the mafia ELO is 1550, my ELO change would have been based at ELO 1500 v ELO 1550, not ELO 1450 v ELO 1550.

Say town won. If town(Elo 1500) won against scum(Elo 1550), town will get +17.1 (the program will round down it to 17). My ELO will change from 1450 to 1567.

How about replacement?

Replaced player, when win, has his ELO increased by a K factor of 15 and when lose, has his ELO decreased by a K factor of 30.

Replacing player, when win, has his ELO increased by a K factor of 30 and when lose, has his ELO decreased by a K factor of 15.

The K factor = 30 is only valid for Newbies and Normals. This is because there is guarantee of balance of setup.

To be considered for ELO leaderboard, the player's last game must be finished 1 year ago.


1. Anything that I miss?
2. Does anyone has standarized data history? The Wiki normally only tells which faction wins. An example of standardized data history would be the Newbie Wiki Archive.

I already play with the newbie stat in the wiki and they are excellent! I just don't know if I can find another structuralized data beside Newbie.

My biggest problem is how to fetch the date of the end of the game. Most structured data (like the Newbie and Normals) despite has the desired list, does not provide the end date of the game. The end date of the game is crucial if I want to merge Newbie + Normals, for instance.

Which is why

1. We have the rule that yiu have to play at least a game in a year to be considered. One timer newbie will be gone by nature.

2. We have the motion to combine Newbies + Normal. I check the data and it would be very easy to import the Normals.

3. At first, I agree with all the variables, but then I remember Scrabble who used randomness yet the elo system is did a good job.

Any reasons? I mean, I can do that, but since both of them are a stable game which is created to be quite balance, I think this it's ok.

If seperate newbie+normals to Open or Theme, that makes more senses.

Anyway, I would do both.

I think they are addressed by the Elo system?

If the skill level is different, then the elo gain or lost would be different.

If the different group of player is different, then the elo gain or lost would be different.

The only thing that cannot be addressed by the Elo system is the balance of the game. Some games are easier for town to win. Some games are easier for scum to win. I believe Normals and Newbies adress them quite well by limiting the violateness of the game, so that was my basis of merging the game.

I keep thinking of Glecko, which is a ELO system with standard variation, which accounts for too many "variable".

That is your elo rating. It's like how many stars is your quality, but more complex. People starts with elo of 1500. If you're good, your elo will climb up. If you're bad, your elo will go down.

But what is VERY GOOD PLAYER? can only be solved after I retrieve my hard disk.

The ELO formula takes two parameter

(1) Did you win?

(2) How tough is your opponent

Just saying 4/5 or 1/3 is not enough data. This is ELO, not fantasy football..

If you lose, but your opponent is tough (ie. the scumteam is demi-god), you lose small ELO point.
If you lose, but your opponent is easy, you lost a big amount of ELO point.

Same way if you win. If you win against tough player, you gain big ELO point. If the enemy is easy, you win small amout of point.

So it's entirely possible for you to have win rate < 50%, but elo > 1500.

Here's an idea. Instead of win rate as win / (win + lose), try win + 1 / (win + lose).

It helps when the size of the data of a player is small.

We consider 501 games and 288 players had at least 5 games to be eligible for the elo system. The "1 game in the last 365 days" has been waived for this update until Newbie 17xx is updated.

I'm thinking that since there is feedback system from modlist of Open, if the game is a repeated setup, than to a certain degree we can infer that the repeated setup is balance and we can consider that for ELO leaderboard.

Until more people are eligible than not posting "Top 25" lists is highly skewed. Not sure if the effort of going through enough games is worth it to you.

I really want to change to Glicko rating system after I combined the Newbie Games. Glicko rating system is like ELo, but with a uncertainty level.

So instead of ELO 1520, you have ELO 1520
+
50 to address uncertainty. Which means your actual ELO is around 1470 ~ 1570.

The biggest problem is the fact that a striking proportion of the 2000 players is just a one-timer or two-timer players.

I mean, people called Andy Murray the top tennis player because he has a consistent track record. Nobody said "Hey! I think this Person X is the best tennis player in the world because of this, despite he only play 1 game."

You are correct. My Top 25 players may not even be in the real Top 100 players. Very True.

There is no way to know the actual accuracy, but there is a way to increase the accuracy.

The track record is a very valuable proof to increase the accuracy of the list. One thing we have to consider is the possibility of
hot streak
or fluke. By having 5 games limit, it is expected that that lucky player would run out of luck and would finally lose. It is expected that over time, people's track record would converge to a certain point to show your actual skill.

Because of that, I apply (the seemingly) arbitrary 5 games limit to wait for the ELO to converge. If the ELO doesn't converge then it's a fallacy to imply A is better than B from non-converged ELO, which is why I don't include it.

Are 5 games enough for the ELO to converge? This is debatable and researchable. But the limit is important.

Theme Games is not necessarily designed with balance in mind (ie. Mod-intervention game). Some does, but we cannot generalize for the purpose of the leaderboard.

There are 2 ways to process Theme Games.

[1] Somehow extract data out of it.
[2] Ignore it.

Until I find a way to solve [1], [2] it is. The leaderboard is designed to tackle extreme player diversity, but not extreme game diversity.

I re-open the motion of finding "Champion over Different Queue" instead of simply "Generalized Champion of Everything"

After I saw that the data extends back to 2012 & 2013, I feel more confident at the system.

I am considering that after I tabulated Open. From 2013, there are around 200 games so that bumpts the tabulized game total to around 700ish.

Although, it's not how do I calculate town/scum. It's how I calculate town/scum1/scum2/SK that becomes the problem.

Do you train per player? If you do, please be aware of overfitting.

And how do you exactly do that? Multivariate logistic regression?

I think I may as well spilt ELO from town/mafia without waiting to input Open Data. I don't think I'm capable of inputing data during college, but coding for it is definitely a go.

The premise of logistic regression is promising.

I have an idea. Is it possible for the algorithm to merge to identical players? Apply cluster algorithm by merging similar player with higher data.

Since some player are similiar, you would have bigger W/L data to process if you merge one into one?

Plot the W/L of players of both mafia and town. If the Pythaghoras distance of 2 player is very small, we can conclude that this player has similiar skill. You can merge them, add up their W/L to create one super player.

You put T S O at 0.73, which is a superior town. I put T S O at 1500, which is a completely average town.

Despite I already integrate Newbie 17xx, I won't release it now, because my focus is more to algorithm development instead of leaderboard development. Although, I can give a spoiler that what used to be fferyllt-(huge gap)-Vedith is no more. There are now 4 players between fferyllt-Vedith

@LQ: Patience, my dear. Data entry is more asshole than you can imagine.
What makes Open even tougher is that unlike Newbies or Normal, nobody compiled it.

So my logloss is + 0.569, so currently ELO is better than multivariate log. regression. However, none of us did Cross Validation so overfitting is really dangerous.

So both ELO and multivariate is trained using Newbies data. We can use Normals as test data.

I will use Normals game where 1) solid-ball and 2)non-tie result as test data.

Mildly curious what basis you're using to compare ELO to logloss, since ELO isn't a probabilistic formula. I suspect there are also material differences in how fitted your data is, since I believe you're explicitly solving for ALL players, while I'm cutting off anyone with games <8 in a given alignment.
1. You can derive probability from Elo rating.

2. I did solve all, but when I use the ELO to predict the data, I cut off at >= 5 games due to the hypothesized non-converging ELO.
Adding in, say, all players with at least four games in a given alignment would doubtless lower my error value quite a bit, but at the cost of introducing potentially severe overfitting issues that largely can't be measured.

I cannot release the elo algorithm yet because it still relying on the not-so-cleaned data. (ie. I haven't create the parser of cleaned data)

I think untill we find an algorithm that is better than coin toss, we shouldn't update either our leaderboard until we find an algorithm that is better than a coin toss.

I will be angry if the optimal algorithm is a neural network =/

It's funny that on the first run, I accidentally used the wrong K factor and actually performed better than a coin toss.

Apparently, mhsmith, I misread the way your multivariate algorithm works, thus I re-coded again and re-test it again.

Your error is now +0.677034669602, which is
better
than coin tos.

Omg. I'm stupid.

I have been too harsh at myself by saying "Realeo, your algorithm is worse than coin toss" until I realize that coin toss is discrete algorithm while everything else is a continuous algorithm. I can't compare discrete to continuous.

A coin toss is discrete so I make my program spits discrete prediction. The new algorithm has an accuracy of 51.7%
over cross-validation


After I have actual free time, I will deploy the leaderboard of the new alogirthm.

Be assured that I still compile Open. However, to get insight why it is so hard to compile, I challenge you to compile open 626.

So I finally find myself a free time, but I have a question.

Say that you have a boolean equation in Excel. How do you apply those equation to the entire row? It's getting annoying if I have to click and drag the whole thing--especially the fact that I may have to do that repeatedly.

I have an =NOT(AND()) formula that I want to apply to the entire column. I usually put the formula at one cell and drag it down. It becomes cubbersome.

We use Glicko method to calculate your elo.

People kept protesting that

[X] Mafia is a small sample game
[X] We discard Theme game (and I fail to compile Open) diminishing a huge room of sample on our calculation.
[X] Every setup is different.
[X] It relies on other player as well
[X] Good player can be fucked up by bad player.

With so much noise, we cannot provide accurate elo.

Therefore, instead of giving an elo, we provide you a range of elo. If your elo is 1525
+
150, this means that your elo is in range of (1375,1675)

Your range goes smaller as you play game and goes higher as you took hiatus.

The elo is calculated every quarter.
