Pirates v. Ninjas!

Mod: Mr Stoofer

Throughout the centuries, scholars have debated one question above all others. A question which underpins our understanding of what it is to be a human being, the answer to which would fundamentally affect the way that humanity looks at itself and the World. A question which, if it were ever to be answered, would undoubtedly direct the course of human history for the rest of time.

Who would win in a fight between Pirates and Ninjas?

This game will resolve that issue once and for all.

Please note, that in wrenching the Pirates and the Ninjas out of their proper cultural contexts, there has been some “collateral damage”. A certain number of iconic figures (real and fictional) have been brought along for the ride. It is not presently known what part they will play in this epic battle.

RULES

[01] Votes must be in bold. If you do not bold your vote, it will not be counted.
[02] Please be attentive and unvote, if necessary, before casting a new vote. This is not required, but I’d appreciate it.
[03] Lynching will require a simple majority of votes. Once a player has reached the necessary majority, their pleas are useless and any attempts to unvote will be unheeded. Feel free to post in twilight, though.
[04] You may vote: no lynch – majority votes of this kind are necessary to end the day without a death.
[05] At deadline, a person will be lynched if they have a majority of voters voting for them. That means you can be lynched with just one vote if only one person is voting.
[06] The game is not to be discussed outside the thread unless your role specifically states that you may do so – and then only at night.
[07] When I set a day deadline, the deadline lasts until I actually lock the thread.
[08] Once your death scene has been posted, you’re dead. Stop typing. That means NO "BAH!" POSTS.
[09] No small text. Don’t edit/delete previously submitted posts either.
[10] Don’t quote any PMs from me. If you do, I will destroy you.
[11] If you have a night choice to make, it is due by the posted deadline. I will not wait for you – if you do not submit a choice to me, I’ll make it for you and you won’t like it.
[12] If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 48-hour period, please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.
[13] Unlike other mods I am fallible. Please point out any mistakes I make gently. In particular, if I post a vote count that does not accurately reflect your vote, it is your responsibility to correct me. If you don’t your vote may be treated as it appears in the vote count.

[15] Remember, it’s a game and it’s supposed to be fun. Be nice to your fellow players and your mod. I have zero tolerance for abusive posts.

Special Rules for Pirates v. Ninjas!

[16] It is especially important that you do not discuss this game outside the thread, EVEN AFTER YOU ARE DEAD.
[17] All bad guys (scum) have one-shot immunity against any scum group. In other words, for a scum cross-kill to occur, a bad guy must be targeted twice by the same scum group. If a kill fails for that reason, the targeting scum group will be told that that was why their kill failed.
[18] This game will not be permitted to drag. As far as I am concerned, no day should normally last longer than 4 RL weeks, and I’ll set deadlines accordingly.
[19] Anyone who goes more than 72 hours without posting, without advance warning, is likely to be replaced. (I don't count weekends for this purpose.)
[20] There is at least one Townie in this game. The Townie Role PM looks like this:

Please confirm in the thread.

All Pro-town players have the same win condition as set out above. If you don’t have that win condition, then you are scum!

Teach (known to those who feared him as "Blackbeard"), turned to his first mate, to give him the final orders. But as he opened his mouth, before he could make a noise, he heard a rushing sound. He and the mate both stopped to listen. Suddenly they were both blindedby a bright light, and deafened by a huge pop. And then Blackbeard was gone...

The Borneo Jungle, September 13, 1975

-- GI Joe circled his opponent warily. In his hand, he held the knife. He had recovered from the body of the guard he killed, when he escaped from his cell, some 40 metres below this room. Now he would do battle with one of his most implacable foes. Because facing him was the deadly Kamakura, wielding his fearsome katana.

And then the concentration of both men was broken by a strange rushing sound that appeared to be coming from the floor directly below where Kamakura was standing. Suddenly GI Joe was stunned but a bright light and huge popping sound, which blinded him and deafened him. As his vision slowly returned, he realised that Kamakura had vanished...

Echo Base, Hoth, 3ABY

-- Commander Skywalker was just finishing the preflight checks on his T-47 Snowspeeder. Everything seemed to check out, so he flicked open the intercomm to ask for the base's shields to be raised for take-off.

In the Echo Base control tower, the duty officer was Mel Kergot. He heard Commander Skywalker's communications channel open, but instead of hearing the Commander's voice, all heard was a rushing sound, followed by a loud pop which forced him to cry out in pain and pull off his headphones. If he had been looking, he would have seen the cockpit of Skywalker's Snowspeeder briefly illuminated by a bright, white light.

As he recovered composure, Kergot tried to restore communications, but he could get no response from Commander Skywalker. So he ordered an engineer in the hangar to check the Snowspeeder. As the engineer opened the cockpit from the outside he saw in the pilot's seat... Nothing.

The Stooferdome, January 20, 2008

-- Mr Stoofer looked at the figures appearing out of thin air in the arena. Each of them was slowly regaining their sight and their hearing after their ordeal. He seemed to think that there was nothing unusual in the mere fact that people were appearing out of thin air. But something

was

wrong. There were the Pirates, and there were the Ninjas, just as he had planned. But Luke Skywalker wasn't supposed to be here, and as for the rest... Mr Stoofer was sure that he had calibrated the machine with all due precision. But plainly it had brought to his battle arena more individuals than he had wanted. Oh well...

"I think you all know why you are here," said Mr Stoofer in a loud voice. "Today we finally resolve the most important question in the history of human history. So let battle commence!"

Down on the floor of the arena, for the most part, confusion reigned. A number of those who had suddenly appeared in the arena had, in fact, no idea why they were there. They just wanted to get home. But others -- some bearded, others dressed all in black -- began organising themselves for a fight. And nobody could help but notice that some people seem to have been killed almost as soon as they had appeared.

I am going to issue a final warning to Flameaxe, cicero and Thestatusquo. On page 11, your criticisms of each other and of a player no longer in this game crossed the line from legitimate discussion into pure abuse.

From the diary of Victor Frankenstein

-- It is now some hours since I was transported from my laboratory to this strange place. I have checked all my equipment -- which by some miracle was transported with me. It all seems to have survived the trip unscathed.

Accordingly, I have set up my equipment and decided to carry out my first trials on one of the dead bodies that I found here when I arrived. He is a young man, a farm boy by the looks of things, dressed in khaki with a large brown cloak. The circumstances are not ideal, but I feel that if I do not now seek to put my theories into practice, I may never get the chance. I appear to be stuck in some strange metaphysical battle which threatens to destroy my equipment, and all my work, if I do not put it to the test now.

In a hole in the ground...

In about 1930, the Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon of the University of Oxford was marking School Certificate papers, in his rooms in Pembroke College, when he came across a blank page. Suddenly inspired, he wrote the words "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." He did not go any further than that at the time: but by late 1932, Professor Tolkien had finished the story and he gave it to his friend CS Lewis to read.

The rest (as the clichÃ© goes) was history.

Death of a Legend

On 11th November 1718, Lieutenant Robert Maynard of the Royal Navy, commanding two small hired sloops, joined battle with

Adventure

, commanded by the notorious Captain Edward "Blackbeard" Teach.

The most complete account of the following events comes from the

Boston News-Letter:

Maynard and Teach themselves begun the fight with their swords, Maynard making a thrust, the point of his sword against Teach's cartridge box, and bent it to the hilt. Teach broke the guard of it, and wounded Maynard's fingers but did not disable him, whereupon he jumped back and threw away his sword and fired his pistol which wounded Teach. Demelt struck in between them with his sword and cut Teach's face ; in the interim both companies engaged in Maynard's sloop. Later during the battle, while Teach was loading his pistol he finally died from blood loss. Maynard then cut off his head and hung it from his bow.

Despite the best efforts of the pirates (including a desperate plan to blow up the

Adventure

), Teach was killed, and the battle ended. Teach was reportedly shot five times and stabbed more than twenty times before he died and was decapitated. Legends about his death immediately sprang up, including the oft-repeated claim that Teach's headless body, after being thrown overboard, swam between 2 and 7 times around the

Adventure

before sinking.

Teach's head was placed as a trophy on the bowsprit of the ship.

I have been asked whether a Tie is possible. The position is this:

As you can see from the Town win condition in the Rules post, if all the bad guys die, then the Town wins (even if all pro-Town players are dead).
If the game goes several days and nights without any lynches or kills, then (after a fair warning) I will declare "...and they all lived happily ever after" In that case the surviving teams will share the win.

Under rule [17], each

bad guy has his

own

one-shot immunity from each scum group.

An example: Imagine 2 scum groups, Mafia and Werewolves. On night 1, the Mafia target Werewolf #1, and the Werewolves target Mafia #1. Both survive due to rule [17]. The next day, Werewolf #1 is lynched. On night 2 the Mafia target Werewolf #2. He survives because he still has his own personal immunity from Mafia kills. The Werewolves target Mafia #1. He dies because he has already used up his one-shot Werewolf-kill immunity, on night 1.

In fact, I'll even quote the following, which appeared in all bad guy role PMs:

I am afraid I don't have much time for comments now - I'll give nay insights I have on Monday. I should thank mith for help with the setup and all the players for making this what I hope was a really great game.

The one flaw in this game was that it could, I think, have been broken wide open by an early mass claim. In the end I figured that that just would not happen. Sure enough:

The Mod's thoughts

I'm glad that so many of you had fun playing this game, I had fun designing and modding it.

Normally I am very conservative about power roles in my games (see Stoofer's 3rd Law). The purpose of this game was to include as many awesome roles and powers as I could fit into a reasonably sized game. This did cause certain difficulties. As The Fonz said, the game would have benefited from having some more Vanilla Townies. That was also mith's comment when he reviewed the game. I originally wrote the game for 25 players and I didn't want to increase it in size by too many, so I just added one vanilla townie.

I was also heavily influenced by Dead Rikimaru's game, Mafia 69: noXkill. I was hoping for the same thing he got in his game, where out scum was allowed to live; and I wanted to put the scum in the position of knowing who the other scum were but not being able to tell the Town. Like him (but independently of him), I concluded that where the scum have some immunity to cross kills, then the setup should be that if everyone dies, the Town wins.

In the next few posts I'll respond to some of the specific post-game comments that have been made in this thread.

I think the lack of crosskill rule made it pretty much guaranteed the game would end in a prisoners dilemma, and I'd be interested to know why stoof thought that was a good idea.

One of my aims for this game was to have an interesting endgame. I was hoping that we would get to some sort of situation with multiple scum groups and townies left alive, with the possibilities of deals being struck, double-crossing, etc. I was happy with the way it turned out. It is especially fun to think that if there had been one

scum bag in the end game, the Town would have lost.

I screwed that up first. Fonz and I spent a lot of time coming up with plausible safe claims and Fonz suggested Peter Pan for Pirate Protector. I thought that safe claim was brilliant. What happened though was that I was multitasking and impetuously responded quickly to Lawrencelot's claim when I saw an obscure name that I didnt recognise "Stephen Maturin" and assumed he had done what Fonz and I had done - go looking for things that fit but that were unlikely to be counterclaimed.

AFTER I had posted, I looked up Stephen Maturin and started to hit myself on the head, because I had forgotten about that character from Master and Commander, who is Jack Aubrey's physician and right hand man. It was clearly the real character.

I was amazed that nobody else managed to work out that Stephen Maturin would be the Pirate Protector. For most of the game, after Jack Aubrey died Night 1, I was kicking myself for being so obvious...

I wouldn't have put it that was myself, but... yes. The Doctor on the other hand is a cool role and I would have put him in the game if I could have.

The fact that it was fast paced and fun are related. I am getting so bored of games that go on for months and months. I didn't see why any day has to last more than 3-4 weeks; such short deadlines made this game such a success, I believe.

I will be running all my games in this way from now on.

Well, you have a point, but with so many scum, and the difficulty of crosskills, the Town did not have that many days. It pretty much had to lynch scum almost every day in order to win, which justifies the number of confirmable power roles.

I first saw it used by amb in his first Deep South Mafia game on the Grey Labyrinth. I added the restriction that the role stopped working if it became public.

I have used it before - with identical restrictions - in Mini 250: Villains of Gotham City. That game also featured a Batman Miller-type role who would kill anyone who killed him at night (i.e. Darth Vader in this game).
