Escape Room

April 23, 2017 - 12:35 PM (GMT)

Epilogue

The brave adventurers were staring at the LCD in disbelief. Alisae had actually, legitimately, for
realses claimed scum, and he was gone. They had won the game. The grand prize was theirs.
Finally they could leave this menacing blend of a borstal classroom and a prison canteen. Yet,
their excitement was strangely lacking.

StealthyNoodle:
Well, that was anti-climactic.
BlackVoid:
Yeah. I hate being right.
nancy:
So humble.
Tribunal:
Good evening, beautifuls! As all good things must come to an end, it breaks my heart to announce
that your game is now over.
TesXX:
Tragic really.
Srceenplay:
Absolutely, I'm calling my grief counselor as we speak.
Tribunal:
But the good news is, you won the grand prize!! What's more, you guys also made history spending
the literal longest time anyone has ever spent in an escape room. 131 hours of recorded footage!
StealthyNoodle:
(groaning) Kill me.
BlackVoid:
That's impossible. How did we clock up 131 hours if it's only been two days?
Tribunal:
I don't know, I'm terrible at tropospheric geometry. It was 131 hours and it was the longest.

There was a moment of awkward silence as the brave adventurers were trying to decide whether
their world record made them look like winners or losers.

WhyMafia:
So what happens now? What is the grand prize?
Tribunal:
Umm... the grand prize is... a date with me.
StealthyNoodle:
Ohhh!
Tribunal:
I'm a lesbian though.
StealthyNoodle:
Oh...
nancy:
What a coincidence! So am I!
StealthyNoodle:
Noooo!
Tribunal:
Well I guess that's decided then! The rest of you get a consolation prize of £1,000,000 to split amongst
yourselves.
Srceenplay:
Wait, you told Loopdan you were kidding when you said that was the prize.
Tribunal:
I was kidding... kidding. Kidding kidding him.
Srceenplay:
I'll just pretend that makes sense. Can we go now?
Tribunal:
Of course! But first, my date. nancy?

The divine click of a door unlocking caressed their ears and within moments Escape Room 1784
was vacated of its female occupant.

Tribunal:
And now, the consolation prize.

And in a resolution that totally nobody could see coming, the trap doors beneath the adventurers
gaped open and sent them down below.

On their way to the treasury, of course.

Yeah, let's go with that.

Spoiler:
The Town

Game Rules

Please read this section carefully to avoid any infractions. Violations may lead to forced replacement
or modkill.

General Rules

  • Site Rules.
    Please follow all site rules.

    Play to win.
Game throwing is the term when someone is intentionally doing actions that can
make her affiliation lose, such as lynching self that will result in ending the game and losing
your side. So play in accordance to your current win condition.

    No personal attacks.
Mafia is a psychologically intensive game and sometimes discussion gets
heated. Frustration and saltiness is expected, but it's not an excuse to insult and harass
other players. Attack arguments, not the human being behind them. Abusive behaviour will
get you replaced, and possibly earn you a site-wide suspension.

    Claiming.
Claiming is part of the game as well as counter-claiming. If you think that there is a
need in claiming a role, you are not discouraged to do so as long as you do not quote nor
provide screenshots about the role distribution or any PM from the game moderator.

    Graveyard and strangers.
Dead players, as well as unregistered ones, are not allowed to
speak in the game thread. 'Bah' posts are not allowed.

    No discussion of ongoing games.
Do not discuss the game outside this thread, or mention
other ongoing games unless the moderator explicitly allows it. More information here.

    Be active.
Try to post at least once a day. Being inactive for 48h will result in a prod. If you
do not respond to a prod within 24h, you will be replaced. Accumulating 3 prods will also
    result in automatic replacement.

    Night actions.
If you do not PM your night action within 24h of the night start, the moderator
will gently remind you. This does not count as a prod. If you fail to submit your night action
before the deadline, you will not act that night. This goes for mafia kills as well.

    Unstated guidelines.
Please do not try to take advantage of loopholes and backdoors within
the rules. Inform the moderator in private so they can clarify and update them. Rule abuse
is punished on the moderator's discretion.

Posting Standards

  • Official colour.
    The colour
    #587b7f
, as well as any shades that resemble it, is to be used
only by the game moderator. Using that colour in your posts will be treated as moderator
    impersonation.

    English only.
No other language is allowed. Greetings and such are acceptable.

    Do not hide it.
Do not hide messages in invisible texts, tiny fonts (size<75), or cryptography.
    Breadcrumbing is okay.

    No off-topic posting.
Avoid cluttering the game thread. An occasional sentence or two is fine,
but remember you're here to play mafia.

    Ignore them.
Do not quote, respond, nor give attention to violating posts. Since they are
supposed to be deleted, do not extend their existence.

    Default styles.
As much as possible, for proofreading and uniformity, use the default font colour
    and style in posting.

Game Regulations

  • Deadlines.
Day phases last up to 14 days. Night phases last for 48 hours.

    Communication.
The game thread will be locked during the night phase. Private topics (such
as the mafia meeting) will only be open at night.

    Majority lynches.
A lynch is achieved when half the players + 1 are voting the same person.
As soon as the final vote is cast, the game enters twilight phase and any future votes will be
    discarded.

    Voting standard.
It is recommended that you use the official vote tags. The bold tag is
acceptable, but discouraged. Votes in quotes or spoilers will not count.

    Example:
    [vоte]MiniDeathStar[/vote] produces VOTE: MiniDeathStar

    Unvoting.
Unvoting can be done via the unvote tag. It is not necessary, but it will be useful
    in some situations.

    Example:
    [unvоte]MiniDeathStar[/unvote] produces UNVOTE: MiniDeathStar

    No lynch.
You may vote for no lynch in the same way as for a lynch. If a majority vote has
not been achieved by the deadline, the day ends in no lynch.

    Example:
    VOTE: no one or
    VOTE: no one

    Votes are changeable.
You can change your votes or unvote anytime during the day only.
You don't need to unvote when re-voting.

Prologue

Nine confused pairs of eyes peered into the soft twilight of the room's interior. The menacing
blend of a borstal classroom and a prison canteen was only compounded by the inexplicable
presence of a thick rope that dangled from a hook in the ceiling and ended in a hangman's
knot. A single chair was strategically positioned underneath, leaving no doubt that the rope's
only purpose was tying necks.

Ares:
How thoughtful of them to leave a noose here. This place is so depressing that I'm already itching to--

Ares's line of thought was cut short by the sudden buzz of a low-quality microphone which
flooded the room through a pair of speakers on the wall. A female voice swore, presumably at
an unnamed sound engineer, before clearing her throat and addressing the group.

Tribunal:
Hello lovelies. Welcome to Escape Room 1784. I'll be your Tribunal. I'll make sure your adventure is
running smoothly and you're all obeying the rules of the game.
LaserBeakDuck:
What are the rules?
Tribunal:
It's very simple. Two of you are secretly chosen to win the grand prize by getting rid of the rest of
you. The other seven will have to find those scoundrels and vote them out. Easy-peasy lemon squeezy.
WhyMafia:
And what if we want to quit? Like before all this nonsense? This room is giving me the willies.
Tribunal:
Well... there *is* one way to quit.

It took them all a moment to process her words before everyone's attention focused on the
noose in the corner.

moonman:
Oh you have got to be kidding me.
Tribunal:
Not very excited, are we? What if I told you the prize is £1,000,000?
Loopdan:
WHAT.
Tribunal:
Sorry, you're right, I *was* kidding you.
Loopdan:
Fuck. I got excited.
Tribunal:
The full rolebook is up there on the desk. Make sure you pick your role cards, too. Good luck!

The speakers died, as did their suddenly elated hopes. There seemed to be only one way to
really get out of here, and that was to play the game. And the sooner they started, the better.

Waiting for players to confirm their roles.

Confirmations received: 9 / 9
The game will begin as soon as 7 players have confirmed.

Day 1

Not everybody appeared to agree with the general suggestion that they play the game in
order to escape. A small group of dissenters split off from the rest of the group and started
shouting, insisting they hadn't signed up for a room this depressing and had they known
they'd be thrown in a menacing blend of a borstal classroom and a prison canteen, they
never would have agreed to participate.

moonman:
This is ridiculous! I didn't sign up to be locked in a bloody classroom!
Ares:
Phooey on the grand prize! I want my money back!
LaserBeakDuck:
Let us out of here!

To their surprise, the speakers on the wall sprang to life once again.

Tribunal:
You're fussing again? Fine. I'm letting you three out. There's no need to ruin everyone else's
fun with your moaning.
LaserBeakDuck:
"Fun", right.
Tribunal:
Oh, and don't dream of getting your money back. You should have read the fine print.

And before anybody could answer, a trap door opened beneath the trio and swallowed them
into its black void before shutting closed.

Tribunal:
Don't you boys worry. We get quitters all the time, there's always some other poor sod, I mean
brave adventurer willing to fill in. Let me check the queue, will be a moment.

Just as suddenly, another trap door opened at the ceiling and three brave adventurers
materalised in with a brief scream and a heavy
thump
on the floor.

Tribunal:
There we go! Sorry about that. You can start playing now. Have fun, sweethearts!

Looks and awkward hi's were exchanged, but nobody really knew what to say. They quickly
reached an unspoken agreement to give up trying to make sense of the situation and just
focus on the game. The grand prize awaited.

Not voting:
TesXX, bjc0303, Chronicle, StealthyNoodle, nancy, WhyMafia,
Loopdan, Srceenplay, Pine

With 9 alive it takes 5 to lynch.

Deadline for Day 1 actions:

April 9, 2017 - 3:00 PM (GMT)
You have (expired on 2017-04-09 15:00:00) to discuss and decide on a lynch.

Let the games begin!
The best way to start off the game is to claim BP or not BP. This is because BP claims won't be taken as seriously if you claim it later in the game, like if it's lynch or lose or if you're about to get lynched. It's a stupid idea for scum to claim BP this early since there's no reason to already think they'll be lynched. In the rare case that scum claims bulletproof, then either the cop (if there is one) or the bulletproof (if there is one) should counterclaim. The doctor shouldn't counterclaim, but if the setup is Column C then the doctor will be the only one to counterclaim(we wait for counterclaims first). If there is no bulletproof claims, then the tracker (if there is one) should claim because they know there is a doctor.
I think that's about everything about the strategy.
We also start off with random votes, so VOTE: StealthyNoodle because there's no type of argument saying that name is townish.
Also
Not BP

Also
Not BP
Also, if you counterclaim DO NOT say which role you are. Just say "I counterclaim" or something among those lines.

VOTE: Srceenplay For failing to use spelling autocorrect.

I claim not BP.

Everyone needs to make their BP or notBP claims immediately. Do this in your first post. Do not stall. Do not claim or hint at any other roles you may have and don't hint that you do
not
have a power role.

Does that mean you are explicitly not claiming BP or that you are refusing to make a claim one way or another?

Probably the second because he says he isn't claiming
anything
.
@Srceenplay all I'm asking is for you to say you're BP or not BP. If you're the BP, then I understand being scared of getting nightkilled, but you're also probably not going to get lynched since scum claiming BP is stupid. Even if you do get lynched you caught mafia.
If you AREN'T the BP, then claiming would help the town if nobody claims BP and the possibly existing tracker would claim, outing their reports on later days while being protected by the doc.

I do not like this strat at all, I think it's a bad way to teach newbies to play and I refuse to claim either way.

Also hello newbies I am one of your lovely SEs this game. I'm here to hopefully help Pine as the IC (he's an excellent IC so you're in for a treat) in teaching you all the ropes of mafia. It's my opinion that teaching should always take precedence over playing to my win-con in the newbie queue, so that will be my approach throughout the game. If you're ever struggling, please feel free to ask me directly for help on anything. Even if you're scum. Most important thing in any game as always, have fun!

I've explained twice why it's a good strategy and it was created by Radiant Cowbells, not me.
Also, if people just stop claiming then all the other not BP claims weren't worth much.

Actually I just realized I'm not technically an SE lol. But yes, the above still applies!

I have read your explanations and I have seen the strategy in play and I think it's a bad way to teach newbies to play. I do not want this to be a topic of discussion when we should be focusing on RVS so please drop it.

How is it a bad way to teach newbies to play? It protects both the tracker and the BP and gives us knowledge of what our threat is and what we have to fight it. It stops scum from claiming OS BP when they're about to be lynched. If you have a really, really good explanation to why this is a bad strategy then go ahead please.
In post 8, RadiantCowbells wrote:So, over the last few months while I was not playing Mafia I have been working on strategies to up town's winrate in this setup and since I have finally rolled town I am going to put them into action.
The correct play at the beginning of D1 in this setup is for the 1-Shot Bulletproof, if any, to claim. This helps town immensely in numerous setups. Why am I advocating this?

1) It is f***ing insane for scum to try to claim 1-shot BP in this situation. It is an insane risk play which forces a 1v1 in 5/6 setups and gets minor towncred in 1/6.
2) If the setup is Roleblocker/Jailkeeper/1-Shot BP, it's easy for the BP claim to be disbelieved. The claim coming at the start of the game makes it far more trustworthy.
3) If the setup is Tracker/1-Shot BP/Goon, the Tracker knows that there is no doc and can be a lot safer on claiming. Note that mathematically the correct play is to target the outed tracker if the other PR is not known; so little potential gain is made here.
4) If the setup is Tracker/Doc/Goon, a living tracker will know by the lack of a BP claim that there is a doctor. He can then claim safely and be doctor protected the entire game. Which sucks because I'm going to get guaranteed nightkilled but I'll get over it.

Since the 1-Shot Bulletproof doesn't actually net town a mislynch by being hit it is not actually specifically valuable for it to bait the hit.
This does come at the cost of narrowing down the game possibilities for scum: but I believe that the reward is well worth the price.
