pony island looks interesting enough for <$2, and I don't mind grabbing a few shorter games.

also the GF has Transistor so might just grab Necrodancer: Amplified if nothing else in the $5 range strikes my fancy.

(ps just noticed there's a steam sale thread oops)

big recommendations to my pickups on the sale:

Kindergarten: a gory pixel art puzzle adventure game where you relive the same day of Kindergarten over and over, trying to make it further into the narrative each time by discovering the evil plot being carried out by the school's administrators. probably only 4-5 hours of gameplay but totally worth it at $4

Domina: roguelike-ish gladiator sim where you have to recruit and train gladiators and build your reputation in rome over the course of a year. choose employees, build structures, gain favor with the political elite, and make sure you have enough people to win the grand challenge at the end of the year

So I made a poor life decision. Instead of going for a well-rounded collection of games during the most recent Steam Sale, I picked up Witcher 3, and then later went, "Wait, apparently, the first two games have backstory relevant to the third! I should get those as well when they're only $4 together!" I also decided I should actually play the copy of Dragon Age I've had for years. Unfortunately, after trying DA and the first Witcher, I came to a few conclusions: 1) Dragon Age and Witcher are extremely similar games, 2) although I enjoy them, there's only so much Western D&D-style RPG I can play before it feels like a slog (particularly with my motion sickness issues), and 3) there's no way I'll ever have the time to finish all four games unless I never do anything productive again.

So I'd like advice: which game of the four should I become invested in and waste the next 80 hours of my life on? Or should I play like a couple of hours of the Witcher prequels just to get a general idea before the third? I care most about the fun factor; a good story is also a plus.

Witcher 3 is what you should play.

The other two matter but not to the extent you won't understand.

also dragon age inquistion is not a good game dont listen to panzer

DA:Origins is pretty rad but I would do Witcher 3 > DA:O > Witcher 2 for order of importance

In order:

Play Witcher 3 if you also got the Expansion Packs. While there's some backstory in the other games, it's not vital to your enjoyment of Witcher 3.

Play Dragon Age: Origins if you have that and haven't played it. Very classic RPG that still holds up very well for me.

Play Witcher 1 for the Witcher universe backstory, and the fact that it's a very good game.

Don't start with Witcher 2(in my opinion, the worst of the Witcher games) or Dragon Age 2(while I liked it a lot, it's really weird, and a smaller-scale game that won't scratch an RPG itch unless you're invested in the DA universe) or Dragon Age: Inquisition(I loved the main story of Inquisition, but they bogged down the game with a lot of really bad side content and I stopped enjoying the game at some point until I could just focus on the main story stuff again)

Also, if you get motion sick, look into some mods for the Witcher to get rid of motion blur. I've heard it can be a real problem for people, particularly in 3.

i strongly disagree with the assertation that the witcher 1 is a "very good game"

perhaps it is a good "experience", but when judged as a "game" there are glaring flaws that can't be ignored. some old games you have to meet halfway to enjoy. you need to meet tw1 the whole mile to extract any joy from it

Witcher 2 is only good because of the gimmick but I really don't think that makes it good either. Just unique

DA:I was great.
I really hated the other Dragon Age games. Inquisition, though, I ADORED. I played the fuck out of it, did the post-story stuff as well. Got some of the DLC.

Wticher 1 & 2 are whatevver.

Witcher 3 is super good but I haven't made much progress in it because it really does kinda feel like a chore to pick up and get playing and it's so dense and complex at times. I liked DA:I's streamlined task management better than W3's overwhelming open world.

I really liked all the Dragon Age games, though I can't play DA:O anymore because of the memory issue. I even really liked DA2, even though I get why there's such backlash against it. DA:I is probably my favorite of the three, though it feels like a weird gameplay change from the other two games.
One time, back in 'nam, Sudo was set upon by an entire squadron of charlies. He challenged them all to a game of Pictionary, which he won resoundingly. The charlies were forced to not only surrender the skirmish, but also their world-famous chili recipe, which Sudo sold to Texas for a hefty profit. Sudo is a master of diplomacy.

In today's "How is that still a thing?" news... Runescape Mobile?

I could see that having the potential to take over my clash of clans obsession, if it's done well... I'd give it a try for the nostalgia alone anyways.
