MOBTOWN – Two suspected drug dealers who led police on a high-speed chase through MOBTOWN tried to get rid of some of their drugs by throwing them out of the back window of their van, pursuing officers say.
The 26-year-old and 24-year-old male suspects were arrested Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Saint Douglas Avenue and Broad Street, where their van had stopped after colliding with a FedEx delivery truck. A sworn affidavit from a police officer says the men had led them on a chase that reached speeds of 77 mph on 40 mph limit roads after they began pursuing them at 4 PM because the van ran a stop sign.
Officers say the drugs that sailed out of the back window turned out to be rocks of cocaine weighing nearly a kilogram each. Only a portion of the drugs that were thrown out was recovered, and the police estimate that 17 kilograms of cocaine remain unaccounted for. Police say they also seized multiple suitcases full of clown costumes and knives from the van, along with more than five kilograms of cannabis from the one of the suspect's cargo pants. A commercial digital scale and heavy duty bulk containers were also taken from the car, police say, claiming this is typical equipment for the “industrial level sale” of drugs.
The suspects were jailed on preliminary charges of possession of drugs with intent to deliver, aggravated fleeing and eluding and obstructing justice.
