My current computer doesn't handle this very well, it crashes midgame a lot. But excited to try it on the new one.

yeah. It's pretty much at the minimum requirements, though, so even when I have managed to play it's not been fantastic graphically.

The stutter hasn't been TOO bad. I mean, it's not great and it's not like I can compete for the win with it, really. But I could still have a lot of fun being sneaky. The worst problem is simply crashing out of the game.

all right. got to stop trying to play until the new PC is set up. The only way I don't crash during the game is if I die quickly. I kept trying to figure out ways to fix my crashing problem, but nothing's managed to work. Ah well. On the plus side, if this has MMR I should start off way easier!

Played three games and had two top ten finished. Which is significantly better than my average finish of crashed at 80/90. Still doesn't feel totally natural with the controls. Think I need to play with that to heal, loot and prone more fluidly.

starting to feel better about this. It's definitely one of those games where you kind of have to be happy with how you perform with only a loose connection to your finishing spot. I finished 13th today and it was probably the best I played. Kind of regretting all those games I played before my new PC where I'd crash out as my rating is taking forever to get up.

Still not super fast on looting, which remains a weak point. Frustrating going to like 12 houses and finding zero sights or scopes. I've been playing entirely solo so far. Feel like it'd be a way different game duo or with a squad. For one thing I'm really careful about how much I use vehicles in this game, but I think a duo or squad would offer more possibilities for vehicles.

I very much look forward to first person mode, though I'm getting better at being able to peak people in third.

Supposedly view distance is actually harmful. It doesn't affect when people and vehicles show up on the map, but it does affect when brush and what not does.

What FPS are you getting with that, Glork? That was similar to my old system and while max FPS was fine, I got a lot of stuttering even outside of the crashes.

nice!

One thing that's definitely been a problem for me is being able to find vehicles. I imagine a lot of it will just come with time knowing where they spawn, but yesterday I found myself in a couple of situations where the circle was way away from me and I couldn't for the life of me find a vehicle to get me there. I actually died out of circle on one of them. It was like... 10 minutes of me running and healing only to die.

Top 1000 solo queue! I'm actually 771 for Win Rating. Doubt it'll stay for long. I just imagine I've played in the new season more than most, but I am 6 for the last 8 finishing in the top 10. I'm having way more success with drops in center of the map cities.

yeah i just had a couple of 70s finishes because i lost the first fight and ended up in a much denser populated zone than i anticipated. But I just finished 9th in a round where I was at one sliver of health after 15 seconds of landing.

did you know that the final circle isn't the end? that if you wait long enough it collapses? I found that out as I and 2 others engaged in a standoff. Apparently it does and everyone had to run to where it was collapsing to, leading to a frantic end. I ended up getting one guy but losing to the other. sigh.

there wasn't really a panic. it was either run toward where it was collapsing or be the first to die. That last circle does enough damage that nothing can heal you before the time it takes to use the med kit or whatever.

I think i did exactly as well as I could have in that scenario. Knowing that it collapses I might try using a painkiller or something to try and get a tick more health than everyone else, but it wouldn't have helped here.

Frustrating to end up 2nd, but still feels pretty good.

In post 79, SleepyKrew wrote:zor go pro
Obviously this is a joke, but I'll use it as an opportunity to talk about something related: pubg will be a very secondary spectating experience in terms of professional gaming (assuming we mean competitive professional gaming and not streaming). Shooters often suffer because the action is too fast to catch. CSGO makes up for that by having a best of 30 with very quick rounds. And because there are only 5 people a side, it's not impossible for production to find and play a replay when it feels relevant.

PUBG isn't like that at all. 96 people comprising 24 teams (assuming squads are used) is tough to follow. Obviously late game gets more manageable, but you're still left in a scenario where milliseconds decide a fight. And the game will last 30min or so. So the amount of fighting shown is limited. One of the appeals of watching streamers is that you're in the dark with the streamer. PUBG is an experienced game, whether playing or watching. Pro competitions necessarily remove that lack of information.

Additionally, there's a reason why competitive professional sports are all 2 sides competing. It sounds great to have basically an entire tournament of teams in one single game (and for fun it is!) but it's too hard to follow a narrative for any individual team. Which brings me to the point about tournaments. Tournaments tend to be the capstone experience of any sport or league. Whether it's a playoffs with 6 teams or the World Cup with its soon to be 48 teams, this is a great experience for fans. How do you organize a tournament in a game that essentially has every team already in it? How do you move teams on to a new round?

As for the competitive aspect (rather than the broadcasting or spectating), a lot of sports have tournaments and competitions with multiple repetitions to reduce the chance of the better team getting unlucky. The NBA, MLB and NHL all use Best of 7 series, for example. League of Legends uses best of 5. DOTA2 and CSGO (I think) use a double elimination system. PUBG is really hard to do that with because only 4% of your teams actually end up winning. I suppose you could do something like say "the tournament is won by the team that wins two games" but then you're left wondering if you'll broadcast 2 games or 25. You could make up some advanced formula to determine a winner (e.g. assign each place a point and the first team to X points wins), but that's complicated and unsatisfying to a viewer.

Anyway, I know there will be "professional" competitive play at some level. Any time people play something competitively they'll want to test each other in an organized fashion (I did play "professional" Battlefield 2142 way back in the day... where the reward was $250 a person to the top team). But where the game works wonderfully for streamers (for reasons I could go into but this is getting long already), I don't think it'll ever challenge top games as a professional competitive experience.

In post 80, Porochaz wrote:I've managed a few 2nd's and 3rds (I like 7th quite a lot) but my only win is still my 2nd ever game. I've only ever gone off solo when I've been playing on stream (where I killed one of the three streamers with a crossbow).
Is there a clip of that? Because that would be an awesome reaction to have.

i've had some surprisingly fun games just going on the /r/pubattlegrounds discord server and asking for a duo/squad. I just say that I'm bad and have mostly gotten really nice guys. The guy I played with today on a Duo had just gotten the game so wasn't very good (even compared to me), but it was fun anyway. If I were concerned about my Duo rating I suppose I would care, but at this point I don't.

yeah. i've mostly been focused on my solo rating though. If I had a group of people i played with regularly or what not i'd probably care more about duo/squad ratings, but for now just trying to get to a halfway decent point solo.

have you guys seen this tool? http://www.planepath.net/

Basically at the start of the round you drag an arrow across the map that your plane is taking. it shows you the likely drop zone of people (also has the guaranteed vehicles). If you do it right when the game starts it also tracks the lowest health when you can use your first aid kit, but I haven't found that as helpful. And obviously it's most helpful if you use a second monitor.

Nothing game shattering, but I found it really handy for reminding me where is likely to be looted and active.

This information is available elsewhere, but because it helps to put it in one place I've made a spreadsheet about circles:

Image

The damage mitigation columns are about how much of the damage taken by the blue circle is mitigated at each boost bar. So if you drink an energy drink, you'll mitigate almost a third of the damage you take at first in the first circle.

Some insights:
1. You can actually outheal the circle 1 damage from only boosts, although only Boost 4 does that.
2. Circles are roughly 50% of the previous one EXCEPT for the second circle is roughly two thirds of the first.
3. damage increases in a weird way. The 2nd increases by roughly half again the first, the third a third again the second, the fourth a quarter again of the third. So you might think the 5th would be 20% of the 4th. But instead it's THREE TIMES as much as the fourth.
4. In other words, the 5th circle is where the game stops screwing around and tells you that you'd better be in the circle at the right time or it's going to kick your ass.
5. You can outrun even the MAX blue circle closing in on the 6th circle and afterwards if you're unarmed (or with pistol/grenade/melee) and running directly at the white circle. However, if you're running with an assault rifle the blue circle will pass you in that situation. But keep in mind that this is only for the max distance, which won't be the case in most situations, so you'll likely be able to outrun the 6th circle with an AR.

In post 99, Radical Rat wrote:So what makes this game different from the billion other hunger games survival-murder games?

I've seen its explosion in popularity, but as someone who never really could get into the subgenre, what makes this one special?
1. The popularity feeds itself. And not in a bad way. If you want a game with 100 people in each and you don't want the people to be the same, you need a large player-base.
2. It has a hundred people and a map that feels (and is) very large to accomodate them. It leads to varying situations. Games can be similar to each other, but it's fairly rare that they play out exactly the same. On a related note, particularly in duo and squad games situations occur that I find hilarious with regularity.
3. The circle mechanic: essentially as the game goes on, a circle slowly closes on the players, forcing them into a smaller and smaller area. This means that the action can vary between fast and slow but always involves an element of suspense
4. The games are short: 35 minutes for a full game, and that's only experienced by a few people.
5. Winning is HARD. In a solo game you have a 1% chance of winning if everyone won by being random. So it feels GOOD to finish highly. The only "chicken dinner" (i.e. winning game: "winner, winner chicken dinner") I've had felt amazing. Relatedly, while dying in the top 10 can be frustrating, overall I never feel as frustrated (even when hiplop kills me) as I ever do in other games simply because my expectation of winning is so low.
6. You can use so many different playstyles to be effective at the game.

It's a game with PLENTY of flaws, some that are about being in early access and some built in. But overall the experience is one that is fun, addicting, and challenging.

It's already "only" $30. While that's paying for a game that's still in early access, the game itself is perfectly playable and fun.

Would it make you feel better if it were $50 and a sale was making it $30?

got my first solo FPP win. unfortunately my stupid nvidia instant replay was off for some reason so I can't relive it. But it was also my most kills in a game (I think?)

Image

It felt good because I played it pretty aggressively. Until my 6th kill I didn't have a scope either, just a red dot.

how to bind jump crouch. Don't overthink it! Just do it! https://clips.twitch.tv/CourteousSmooth ... olStoryBro been using it for a week now and it makes jumping through windows (don't need to shoot them out, remember) and what not about four times easier.

so if you didn't watch it, it was a predictably mixed bag:

1. The casters were pretty good I thought
2. The camera work/production was attrocious. Had a very hard time showing action. Sometimes they'd actually cut out away from action, which was infuriating.
3. TSM_Break won the first game. He got 11 kills, but he did so by camping one of those little shacks. The first game had an action filled finale and was probably my favorite. Evermore, a Korean overwatch player, took a boat to spawn island and came all the way back.
4. The second game ended up on the south shore of the main island and was pretty fun. Evermore let two other people fight it out and then came in to win.
5. The final game ended up in the rural part of Military Island. Evermore had gone ALL the way to spawn island and came back. Unfortunately most of the last part of the game was overshadowed by the fact that Evermore was basically forced to just med up to survive as long as possible... and did so until he finished 8th and secured the win over the whole thing.

To me, it highlights that the blue zone needs to be adjusted to make looting outside of it for extended periods more punishing. My solution is to debuff healing outside the blue zone, but increasing damage would also do that. Evermore was merely the most successful person at avoiding contact until late in the game, but LOTS of people used this strategy and for good reason.

I really hate to add onto the flames of Third person vs. First, but for esports, first person seems way more compelling. It's a shame we'll only get one of the four days with it.

i think the problem is you basically have two groups converging on the game. There are the ARMA3 people, which were kind of the first people and the game that playerunknown modded. Then there are the CSGO FPS types.

first time playing 3PP in a while because the guy i'm duoing with prefers it. Got a nice chicken dinner with 6 kills, including one awesome car snipe. Highlights (2:40). You can tell I'm super used to 1PP by the way I actually move instead of free looking.

Two good results today in squads, but both ended with the shrinking circle. The first was a win:

Image

It ended 4v1 (I was in the 4) and the last guy was stuck in a sliver of a house with a window. Technically he could have tried to shoot us all but we knew where he was.

That was my first squad win.

The second ended on ferry pier (the actual pier), 2v1. I was on one side and the other team was on the other. And it closed on them so I was screwed.

Image

I don't know if you can really tell, but despite having far more of the circle on my side of the pier, it actually collapsed on their position... which was maybe 3% of the circle's space.

A win is a win, but the shrinking circle end always feels a bit of a letdown to me either way.

EDIT: Actually I see my teammate got a nade kill to end the first! I assumed it was the circle because the timer ended.

Nice!

Unrelated: has everyone set up crouch-jump bind? I mention this because right now it's the single biggest thing you can do to improve things. It's likely that you already try to crouch jump already, but if you aren't hitting 95% of the possible jumps (particularly through windows [including windows WITH glass in it]) then a crouch jump bind will be incredibly helpful. There's basically no excuse for not doing it. The only slight downside is that everrry now and then you end up crouching when you thought you were standing

I really think they need to remove or revamp the redzone. It's both too dangerous and not dangerous enough, for one thing. If you're in most situations, the best probablistic thing to do is to run through the redzone and take your risks because probably 80% of the time you won't get hit. But if you DO get hit, it's round ending. But more than that, the red zone just doesn't serve a purpose. The circle obviously is a good thing as it narrows the playing field and keeps action coming. The red zone... does what exactly? Gives us explosions I guess.

In post 183, Glork wrote:A summary of my recent PUBG luck:

Did a couple of squads with some friends last night. Last one of the night, one of my buddies ran into a tree while we were driving into blue, knocking out himself and me. Other two couldn't get to us in time, so we die before the second circle finishes closing. I bid them goodnight because I have to work early, disconnect and go to bed.

Wake up to find that the other two earned chicken dinner. So I got killed by a teammate through no fault of my own, left to go to bed because it wasn't worth finishing out the round since I had to work, and consequently missed out on the BP and ratings for winning. (I know ratings reset today, but I'm still salty about that.)
Was it tpp? Because I think fpp is still unranked

Hiplop and another guy accidentally dropped into TPP as a three man squad (the accidental part was the TPP not the three man, though UT turned us down)

I literally had the power go out on me for about 3-4 minutes in the middle of the game, but we still won.

You can hear hiplop's excitement:

so apparently it's been tracking FPP stats the whole time. I... definitely would have played it differently had I known. Tons of stupid drops just to fight in school or whatever just to burn some time before doing something else. But truthfully I don't mind. And it only has the stats since the reset on sept 1. Since I was gone for a week I only have a handful of games.

Unfortunately the best way is to do it but the game doesn't make that easy. And you kind of have to decide if you're going to seek short term better finishes (by avoiding action) or go crazy and drop in hotspots so you get into more gun fights.

There are youtube videos that teach how much you want to lead, etc. that are helpful for long range firing.

got a top 10... only to realize i had selected Asia. Dammit.

Next game I landed Mansion and two people beat me to weapons. I got out with about half health, ran to one of the outlying buildings while the other guys fought, grabbed a shotgun, dropped the requisite first aid and sat like this for over 5 minutes, waiting for one of them to come in.

Image

I got a couple of other really nice kills that game in route to a 6th place finish, but let's be honest: the cheesy ones are the best.

this is kind of an every day kill, but I was proud of it because it was in one of my weakest points where I often freeze up. I'm pushing into the white across a totally exposed beach. A guy from the bridge fires down at me. Rather than run around evading in a panic, like I normally do, I knew I had to get a one shot kill. So I swapped to my KAR lined it up and made it work:

Definitely not flashy or anything, but I normally don't have the presence of mind. And lucky he didn't have a level 3 helmet!

Unfortunately I lost that game because I had thought a guy had died to the blue but it must have been someone else because he came charging out of the blue late game to gun me down.

UT's chicken dinner virginity has been taken... in frankly kind of bizarre fashion.

It was 2v1 with me as the 1 (UT had died from falling as we had to jump down the cliffs of the observatory on military) I managed to knock and then kill one of the 2 so it was 1v1.... and then we won via the playzone. Which wouldn't be so weird if I had been engaging the guy or something but I literally had no idea where he was.

Image

The ol' 2 kill win. Feels a bit cheap.

It's ok. I'm fairly confident you would have been mowed down in 4th place just like we were

i just got second place in a game that started with me being chased by a man with a pan for 2 full minutes. i emptied a pistol clip at him, had nothing left, he got me with a swing bringing me down to like 20% health and I just started running and he just kept following. At some point i think he realized he probably needed loot more than he needed to kill me.

I wonder why our squads games from last night didn't count for the ratings. EDIT: Finally updated

Just need to slowly convert DN to FPP and having teammates and we can all sit back and let him win it for us.

Last night we played 14 squad games. They went:

Not Top Ten
Win
Top 10
Top 10
Top 10
... and then a string of 7 not top 10s.

took a long time to climb from .6, but my solo-fpp KD ratio is finally up to 1.0! Also up to 1685 rating. Hoping to get up to 1800 before the reset, but we'll see.

Okay. I'd like to go over something simple but that is both highly effective and reduces the amount of time it takes to establish and figure out the plane's path.

Step 1: Line up the tail with the front doohicky of the plane.

Image
Image

Step 2: Use your player icon's little pointer thing to show you where the plane is going.

Image
Image

You're done! you know exactly the path the plane takes, almost as soon as the plane shows up on your map!

it's a mildly funny picture that looks posed. The Z Team is a play off of the A Team, but (a) my name is Zoraster, which starts with a Z so you're my team and (b) Whereas the A team were a group of highly trained soldiers, we are the opposite of that and so sit at the end of the alphabet. Yet we too are a squad of 4 guys engaged in battles.

In other news, why are koalas not bears?

Spoiler: Answer
.
.
They lack the koalifications.

Explanation:
A koala is not in fact a bear despite looking like one, and this is pretty well known. They are in fact marsupials. But the joke here is that this is not in fact the answer, but rather it is a play on "qualifications" which sounds very like "koalafictions" and thus can be considered "word play" or more simply "a pun."

I'm only getting about 20 rating points per top 10 (I got 22 for 2 kills and #4 last game) which makes getting to my end goal of 1800 before the reset kind of hard.

Wiping the squad from last night:

We won't talk about the immediate aftermath.

How I feel when someone asks me to share my weapons. What? You only have a crossbow and an uzi? And I have a kitted M416 and a SCAR-L with 280 bullets? I GUESS I can share one of those and 30 bullets.

yeah they've talked a TON about it. It's clearly a if not the top priority. And i mean... it will introduce a lot of fun stuff. But at the same time I'm more excited about a new map (to say nothing of better optimization, netcode, etc.)

Test server for a dayish starting tonight with vaulting and changes to ballistics. They give LOTS of warnings that the test servers will be unstable. You're warned.

Ballistics is essentially that they've added bullet drag (air resistance) which will make bullets drop more at the end of their travel distance rather than the steady rate they drop now. I gather the higher the muzzle velocity, the more this effect will be noticed. I think it'll make sniping at very long ranges with ARs untenable. I never really thought sniping at 400+ meters was easy enough to need a nerf but here we are.

Some other changes: neck is now protected by the helmet. Damage to chest is higher, and damage is higher the closer you shoot ot the chest if you hit arms or legs. Also distance reduces damage.

UAZ's will now only have 4 seats :(

oh! one huge change: 8x and 15x scopes will now allow for changing the zoom level via the mouse wheel! That'll make both far more useful. Depending on how it's implemented I doubt I'll choose a 4x anymore.

on the plus side it makes the SKS a weapon I'd consider, assuming its bullet drop is less than an ARs. Right now, I'd rather a 4x scope on a m16 than use an SKS

variable zoom on the 8x looks like it zooms maybe 4x to 8x? It's still going to be hugely helpful but it looks like it doesn't pass 4x. Also right now it doesn't "save" where you zoomed to the previous time.

2nd game on the new map: Chicken dinner.

We collectively only got 1 kill, and an entire duo was killed by playzone to end it, but so what!

  • Blue zone delay time has been reduced. You’ll be given less time to linger between phases.
  • The maximum movement speed of the blue zone has been reduced. The blue zone will move more slowly toward the end of the game.
  • The damage inflicted by 7th, 8th, and 9th blue zones has been increased.
  • Except for the first blue zone, the probability of creating an extreme safe zone (one far away from the center of the previous circle) has been reduced by 30%.
  • The final blue zone will narrow down to the center instead of narrowing down to a random spot, and the total wait time including the blue zone inactive time has been reduced. (195 seconds to 90 seconds)
  • As the end of the match approaches, the safe zone will increasingly favor areas with land over areas with water.
  • On Erangel specifically, the first safe zone will now be revealed 30 seconds earlier.
  • On Miramar specifically, players can now see the first safe zone while flying in the airplane. (We may or may not carry this over to the next live update. We want your feedback about this change.)
  • In-game clothing spawns have been removed from all maps. Other item spawn balance remains the same.

It's a pretty drastic change, frankly. It's going to make our frequent plan of landing and driving somewhere and looting up pretty bad.
