Selecting Your Cards: The Voyager Tarot Deck

This deck follows a slightly different convention for the suits:

Crystals (e.g., Swords)
Cups
World (e.g., Pentacles)
Wands

The card meanings are more alchemical than a regular Ryder-Waite deck, so Crowley's Thoth deck card meanings may map a little better for most of the cards.

I'll have the Thoth deck in mind as I design roles, too.

The "Face Cards" are also more Thoth-like

The Tarot uPick Design Process

• Assign Significator Card: This will be your first choice card unless someone else chose the card before you did. In that case, your Significator will be your second choice, unless that has also been chosen as a first choice. Then it's on to your third choice. If that is also taken it's time for 52-Pickup! All three cards taken has never happened, even in the Large Theme Tarot uPick, so hopefully it won't happen here.
  
• Design the roles
  based on all three cards
  - This happens BEFORE the random alignment assignment. This means that any Significator card can be any alignment, and any Role based on the cards can be any alignment.
  
• Roll the random alignments
  
• Modify roles if needed for balance

1.

2. Posts consisting purely of insults without game content are not tolerated. I penalize such posts with a strike. Three strikes and you're out. Severe issues will be reported to the listmods.

9. I reserve the right to add a few hours here and there to make deadlines fall during waking hours for US Pacific Time. Night deadlines will be arranged so that an entire night phase does not fall on a weekend.

Prods and Replacements:

1. Prods will be given if you do not post in

48 hours

2. You may be replaced if you either do not respond to a prod by making a substantive post within 24 hours, or you need to be prodded 3 times total. You may request for a player to be prodded at any time, but the less you request, the happier your mod is. Prods requested when a player has been absent for less than 48 hours do not count for replacement purposes.

3. If you're V/LA (vacation/limited access), make sure I know. If you are V/LA for more than a week, I suggest requesting replacement, but that's not required. If a lengthy V/LA is adversely affecting the game (e.g., if you are not able to post minimally during that time), then your mod may replace you without penalty.

The querent enters the dimly lit room and takes a seat at the scarf-covered table. She nervously runs her finger over the tasseled edging and wonders what the strange symbols on the scarf mean: a tangle of sharp crystals, heavily carved staffs, ornate chalices and fanciful planets.

The reader emerges from a doorway festooned with a beaded curtain, the wooden and stone beads clicking behind her.

She sits down across the table from the querent, and pulls a deck of cards out of a capacious pocket. "What brings you here?"

The querent starts slowly, but soon a flood of concerns regarding family, lover, career, and purpose in life have spilled from her. The reader sits back, eyes half closed, taking it in, while shuffling the cards.

"Enough." She places the deck on the table and deftly separates it into 3 equal piles of cards. "Choose".

The querent hesitantly taps the middle pile.

The reader picks up all three piles, with the signified pile on top.

"It was good you came to me. This is no ordinary deck of cards. The cards will do more than point out a path to you. They will choose that path and set you upon it. It is sometimes a battle for supremacy, and the cards may seem more preoccupied with some esoteric battle happening in another time or place. Do not let that concern you. In the end, cards will tell you whether your concerns will be resolved favorably soon or if you have struggle, wait and uncertainty ahead.

I will lay out a 9 card spread to explore your questions. We will begin the reading with the first card. It signifies past events that bear on your questions."

A Lynch Has Been Achieved!

The reader deliberately lifts a card face down from the top of the deck and with a flick of the wrist and fingers, flips it face up as she lays it on the table. The querant looks at it avidly, wondering what it portends.

She draws back a little as the scene on the card settles into her vision. It looks forbidding, cataclysmic. A tall, black building juts into the sky, tilted completely off its foundations, caught in mid-teeter before a horrific crash. Behind the building, the sun is swollen and threatening. Wait, two suns? A figure in the foreground strides purposefully through fire. No, not fire. Lava. And the figure looks strangely mechanical, though too smooth and streamlined to be any robot she's ever seen. She wonders if it's a person inside a robot-like suit of armor.

She looks up, to find the reader watching her, a slight quirk of a smile playing at the corner of her lips.

"What is it?"

"This card is your significator for this reading. It represents...you. Where you are. Why you are here."

"What does it mean?"

"It is the Tower. What do you think it means?"

"It's...scary. It looks like something terrible has happened...is happening."

"It is change. The kind of change that happens only a few times in any lifetime. It suggests that the entire edifice of your current life is going to be torn down so you can start afresh. The life you have built up has deep, foundational flaws, and whether by intention or by accident, you have already begun to raze it. Perhaps to the ground.

"We'll continue. Perhaps we will see what has brought you to this point, and where you will go from here."

The querant stares at the card, then flicks a glance at the deck, wondering what the next card will reveal.

After a long pause, the reader slides the top card from the deck and places it face up, to the left of the Tower. The querant stares down at the card. The image is crwoded and chaotic, but at least it isn't over-the-top scary, like the first card beside it. The dominant image is an off-center Mayan sculpture or mask. Behind the mask is a fragment of wall with ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and figures. In the bottom right corner are a pair of hands, one resting on the other. And between the two main images are fields of wheat.

"What does it mean?"

"It is the Hermit. The death mask suggests that you will (or should) shut out worldly distractions, and focus on your own journey and growth. The wheat suggests that you are in a situation of relative plenty. You have what you need. A retreat from worldly pursuits shouldn't harm or impoverish you. Make preparations for that, if you are not in a good place for such a retreat now. And the hands, they are healing hands, suggesting that being the Hermit for now will be good for your well being, and maybe make it possible for you to help others, as well."

"What does this have to do with the first card?"

"This card is part of your current circumstance. The tower suggested a complete, and purifying break with the past, where the edifice of life you've built up is struck down. This card suggests that the path to what comes next is a very personal one, which involves letting go of that edifice, letting it die, and finding a new direction from within."

The querant sighs, a little relieved. Her shoulders relax from tension released.

The reader chuckles. Her voice takes on a warning edge. "The Shadow side of this card may also apply. You may feel estranged from others, and this may be a fruitless retreat into yourself, where you learn nothing you don't already know, and gain nothing worthy of rebuilding."

The reader snapped a card down on the table. "Interesting", she breathed.

A frisson of alarm bubbled through the querant's mind. She leaned over the table to look closely at the new card. The top of the card's picture was dominated by a black octopus that seemed to grin maliciously down at the human figure hanging from his red-tipped tentacles. The figure was encircled by a ring, like the thin disk-like planetary ring around a gas giant. Below the figure was a fast-swirling whirlpool. To one side, a heron-like bird stared downward at the man, its beak seemingly poised to snake out and strike him. To the other side, two hands held a dark, amorphous mass. The querant narrowed her eyes as she realized that within the amorphous mass was the shape of a human face.

"He looks...trapped."

"Indeed. His...your...actions are limited. Constricted. It seems you can hardly tread water. As that great prophet, Michael Valentine Smith once said, 'Waiting is.'"

"Waiting is?"

"It can be an actual state of being, not just a transition from one thing to another. Waiting can be fruitful. Sometimes you can achieve your goals through a nearly effortless wait."

"How does this relate to the other cards?" The reader breathes a low laugh that ends in a sigh. The querant tears her eyes away from the three cards to stare at the reader.

Her words seem remote, distantly empathetic. "This card is also about your current situation, and how you've gotten here. It suggests that inaction has led to your situation, and yet that waiting is - or has been - a good thing, initially. But the three cards together, they are ill-dignified. They do not work together. The Tower is a card of Fire. The Hermit is of Earth. And the Hanged Man is of Water. In this grouping, the Hanged Man suggests that you have become stagnant with fear, despair, or possibly even illness, and that stagnancy is preventing you from embarking on the task of purification and rebuilding presented to you by the Tower.

"You may be clinging to the dismantled edifice of your old situation and life, without the courage to leap into a fiery transformation. The introspection of the Hermit may also hold you back from reaching out to grasp what you could become."

The reader places the next card down. The center of the card is occupied by an Egyptian goddess. She stands in a bed of poppies beside a small stream. behind her is a huge field of flowers, a waterfall, and beyond that is a distant mountain.

"Who is she?"

"Selket, the funerary goddess of protection, magic and healing."

A huge white dove soars beside her. A huge disk is directly behind her. It looks almost like a part of her flower-headdress, until the querant realizes the disk as actually the earth. Another disk looms higher, it's lower portion visible at the top of the card. It's a deep orange color, that reminds the querant of Mars, or a huge harvest moon.

"What does it mean?"

"I'm not sure. Unless..."

The querant gives the reader a sharp glance. "Unless???"

"Well, this is the Empress. She usually represents motherhood, nurturing, even protection."

"So someone -- my mother? -- is going to protect me?"

"Possibly, but I think the card could actually represent your own actions to care for yourself. It's a path outward, beyond passively waiting for the disruptions of the Tower to pass. It suggests that to start the process of rebuilding, you should focus on taking care of yourself and being careful to stay true to yourself as you start over."

She taps the card beside the Empress. "Remember the Moon, and the indications that you might be trying to slow down this wave of change? I think this card explains why. Your focus has been to protect yourself, rather than to embrace, or at least submit to the Tower. The shadow side of this card suggests that you could be over-protective, basically smothering yourself. To smother oneself with self-protection, or to be swept up in uncontrollable, cataclysmic change. Both options look dangerous, eh?"

I think the design thread is a pretty good representative of how chaotic the design process for a uPick game can be. You'll see that there are two sets of role PMs, and you'll see how much impact the reviewers had on the final form of the game. Based on Nacho's feedback and the creativity he brought to the design, I would up tweaking almost every role, and I feel like the final form of the game was much improved by Empire and Nacho's feedback. I would definitely ask them to review a game again, and hopefully they'd like to do that some time.
