This is not true. I don't know if the codified rule originated with shotty (I doubt it) but I can tell you that even when I was first on the site in 2006 there was a strong culture of "if you ask for a title or try to convince people to give you a title you will not get a/that title."

Or, for brevity I could just say this:

I think I was nominated by like 5 people before I ever posted in the thread about my title.

My comments were about how much I wanted it after the nom and what it meant to me.

If you want to call that "campaigning" when I didn't suggest the title, there was already a large group of support for it, and I didn't do anything that is not common in title threads (posting your thoughts on the title you have already been proposed and whether you want it or not.) then sure.

But also you're just wrong.

Like this is actually literally mind boggling to me that that was seen as campaigning.

5 people nominate me for a title.

I purposefully stay out of discussion except to give the customary "I would accept this title"

Chevre rejects title.

I make post saying literally "This title meant a lot to me and I am sad I won't get it but chevre you're doing a great job as title fairy and I respect your decision."

Then I privately messaged chevre and explicitly say "Hey man I really respect the work you're doing in the title fairy and I don't want you to think I'm mad at you. Keep doing a great job"

Then Chevre approves the title.

Then a bunch of people start talking about how they don't like it for completely unrelated reasons.

Then I tell those people those reasons are unrelated. Perhaps a little bit too rudely.

???

I fail to see at what point I was campaigning here.

I tend to think its a bad title for the reasons laid out by ari.

I don't think I agree with the comments about playstyle not being a valid thing for a title though. There's a long history of titles based off of playstyle.

I don't care one way or the other about lolbalance as a title, but for the love of god can it not be rainbow text if it goes through.

Also, my favorite titles are:
Thirteenthly
Did his job
It's pronounced "xalxe"
Friends Forever! <3
Princeton's Pride
mafi ascum
die suck die
GD is my wing/Best Man

I think they all share something in common, which is they are born from either one single memorable moment, which became a site meme on its own, which had a lot of staying power. That is to say, its not like "x thing happened" and then someone nominated it for a title, but rather something happened and it became a part of that users persona so that when it got nominated the response was "oh, thats perfect" not "is this even going to be a thing in 6 months?" OR it has been a consistent part of the users persona for a long time that it became part of what defined them. Kanye talks in broken words. PJ used to go on 1000 word rants in game. People always argued about how to pronounce xalxe.

The only notable exception to this on the list of titles I really like is friends forever, which is based on a particularly funny moment in a game and then immediately became a title because it was so damn funny.

I think a lot of newer titles suffer from the fact that the site is a lot larger than it used to be, and a lot older. It's harder for something to be unique and memorable, and even if it is the larger user base means that many people may still not be genuinely familiar. Many of the older titles if you look at them are really innocuous stuff that happens all the time. But when the site is only 200 people, you can be the "self vote day 1 guy" and end up with a title for it. Theres even an instance of a title for "hitting the eligible title threshold." Simply put, we complain about how all the recent titles suck, but if you look at a lot of the old titles (especially the super old titles) they also suck. We have a long history of shitty titles on this site. The difference is that we don't have low hanging fruit anymore.

All this is to say that I don't feel a particular pull to the alisae nom, but also I think this idea that titles need to be super awesome is revisionist to begin with, and it becomes more difficult to come up with "good" titles than it used to be with each title we give. So sure, let them have it. Just not with rainbow text.

Yeah it's gone for a reason. And people legit tell me I should bring both the avatar and the title back all the time.

And Idk what's wrong with telling someone, "hey, you just got rid of a title you got like months ago that was a crappy joke you were running into the ground l, so let's not give you another title for the same reason that you're gonna give back in 6 months"

I had the pink kitten avatar for like 4 years. And I had the title for like 5-6 years. So if you want a bad title, commit to it for years than I'll consider being like "OK this guy needs a different bad title"
I mean sure, if you ignore completely the several paragraph response I made to that point in the post directly above the one you responded to.

But really my biggest dog in this fight is just that no matter what happens no one gets a rainbow title. Because that would make me have to ignore them and I dont really want to ignore alisae.

It's not rainbow specifically, its that the colors on the black background will naturally draw my eye and make the site harder to read.

It's the same reason I'm not a fan of gif avatars and colored text in signatures.

Although the many alternative colors of the rainbow ARE the most aggressive form of this, I would also be advocating for not having a title that is, say, green on black.

On mafblack, it looks like this:

On mafSilver, it looks like this:

So while its perfectly fine on mafblack, on mafsilver its kinda hard to see the c (MafSepia has the same problem)
This is mostly just a problem with the rainbow text and could be fixed based on how you configure it here
(my current settings are as follows
# of colors: 7
Color Preset: Rainbow
Colors (in order): #f00, #ff7f00, #ff0, #0f0, #0ff, #00f, #00f, #8b00ff)

Next, I don't exactly have screenshots, but ANY color over the spoiler tag actually looks terrible for mobile users, because the spoiler is so small, that spoiler tag won't cover the whole phrase.
it'll look something like this
l
o
l
b
a
l
a
n
c
e

Except of course the text will be smaller, but this should be close enough to demonstrate the problem with any color on spoiler tag.
I mean this COULD be solved with more code, but I think that could be a hassle.
The thing you call fine looks terrible and distracting to me. In fact, I hate when people talk in colored text on the forum in general because I find it VERY hard to read regardless of configuration, with rainbow being by far the worst. I've PMed several mods to tell them that I couldn't read their mod text before. Reading rainbow text is VERY difficult for me, and it is also very distracting.

Pedit: Yes. To your last post. Pls.

What is the relevance to this discussion? Are you suggesting that because reading small text is hard that reading rainbow text is fine? I don't understand your point. Mainly because you have not made it explicitly.

Also, panzer might want to pay close attention to the pronoun listed there for when he keeps referring to Alisae.

Theres a reason that serious discussion shouldn't have non-sequiturs and vague contentless points every other post. It's because its impossible to carry on a conversation if you keep getting bogged down with irrelevant sidebars. Annadog's shtick is to make posts like this, which is fine, but I wish she wouldn't do so in the non-gd/se parts of the forum.

If you have something to add, by all means add it. But stop interrupting a conversation about whether x thing is good to interject nonsense about not liking y.

Can't help but notice that this horrible and insulting title for me (when I already have a title I love) is coming from a person who regularly attacks me and has been seconded only by a person who has been repeatedly instructed to stop harassing me and has been banned 3 times for not following those instructions.

In other words, reject. Move along.

Sure, so lets brainstorm. Theres a specific speakeasy post that I think sums up wraiths personality and I think would be a great jumping off point for thinking of a title, but I'm waiting on the user who posted it's permission to post it here.

re: current raybells debate:
In post 4003, Thestatusquo wrote:I don't care one way or the other about lolbalance as a title, but for the love of god can it not be rainbow text if it goes through.
