I find it really interesting that people thought Ken Levine was doing a sendup of Tea Party people and fundamentalist Christians. This game clearly is a version of American society that embraced a Soviet-esque national religion.

I'm not really seeing all that much that's "lol this is a right wing society"

evidently some of my 64 carts are worth some money, so I'm gonna go sell a few and buy new ones. no real desire to play Harvest Moon on the original console (or really ever again) so this seems like good move.

if you're interested in selling let me know what ones, i can probably give you a better deal on them (i want to start building an N64 collection to complement my SNES one) than you'd get selling to a dealer
that's a great idea. I'd much rather sell to a scummer than a game store anyway.

So I've been playing Illusion of Gaia lately. Great game so far. Highly recommend!

The only problem I've had with it so far is that it's by far better on a control pad than keyboard. The controls are more or less designed around the functionality of a handheld controller, and it ends up being hella clunky on keyboard.

Could you delve into this a bit more? I'm by no means saying it's a
bad
game, I just watched a playthrough of the first bit and it looks fun but ultimately pretty standard. What's novel other than the shovel?

Also my friend gifted me Antichamber for my birthday! How exciting! But I still have like Hotline: Miami and the first Ace Attorney to beat, and I haven't even started Pokemon X. :/ At least there are actually several games I'm interested in.
yeah sure.

I said good, rather than any other adjective, for a reason. Shovel Knight was a game where the designers knew exactly what they wanted and executed it. I really appreciate how tightly focused the gameplay is. The items were great because each one wasn't totally necessary, but allowed you to customize the feel of the game to your specific style of play. Using a combination of items and armor you can get vastly different gameplay, which I really appreciate. Each of the stages is designed very differently around a central theme, so I really appreciated the amount of specialization I was able to get on my character from the items. Simply put, the game just FELT great to play. I don't get that a lot, especially with indie games.

I really liked the art, character, and level design. Along the lines of the designers knowing what they wanted, it really felt like they had a definite plan before they started. None of the areas of the game felt tacked on or lacking inspiration.

It's an extremely well-designed platformer that clearly was made by people who understand game design.

Just... play the game. It's fun.

When I solved these by figuring out how to use mines in a new way I got the Zelda puzzle solved music and felt like the smartest of cunts.

Honestly, amazing fulfilment for *getting* those.

yeah well having to start the puzzles over a bunch of times when I figured out how to solve them a long time ago really pisses me off

the main problem I find with the series is it seems like FF goes into their video creation process with an end result in mind rather than collecting data and figuring out with the root causes of sexist tropes are with a critical eye.

I think the answer most of the time isn't "because games and male gamers are overwhelmingly sexist", and I don't think the data supports that conclusion. it really bugs me watching their stuff and thinking over and over "okay, but you haven't really proven that". they just flatly state "because misogyny" and never actually support it with anything other than raw data and a list of tropes they made up labels for

I did think that this was the best video in the series by far in terms of presenting actual arguments, but I do think it's worth mentioning that you're conflating "sexist" with "bad person" when that is not the point I am trying to make. and I strongly disagree with you that the point made is not "gamers and games are overwhelmingly sexist". that was literally the what all of the arguments made pointed to, regardless of what the talking head said.

but that's getting off into the weeds.

and anyway, what I found really contradictory between their data and their arguments with was their claim that female characters are being FORCED into behaving sexually when they show female characters being willing and enthusiastic participants in sexual activity. now, there is a much more nuanced argument to be made that it's a more insidious form of sexism to show women using sex as a tool and a currency (although I think, from a feminist perspective, that women should have every right to monetize and commodify their sexuality) as their main thing to offer a player, but THEY COMPLETELY IGNORED THAT ARGUMENT and just pushed ahead with the argument that female characters in video games have no agency.

and for the record:

I do think there is a lot of sexist shit in video games and I always watch their videos because I think that feminist critique of the genre is a fertile topic for discussion. and it bothers me that this group, with all their publicity, is completely fucking up a good opportunity to have that discussion. while there is inevitably going to be some backlash if you point out that people behave in bigoted ways, the bigger problem is that their videos present flawed arguments.

Iecerint wrote:It's relevant because you argued that sexualization of female game characters was not problematic because female characters owned their sexuality, and you suggested that feminism should appreciate that. Your tone suggested that your different perspective on this point resulted from everyone else being too stupid to understand it.

The counterpoint is that "strong" female video game characters who run around naked aren't really "owning" their sexuality because the notion that that is a typical way of expressing agency is a male fantasy (e.g., the scene with Judith from that video). It's like creating a "sexy lawyer Barbie" -- she's empowered, so she doesn't need to present realistically.

I thought I had already addressed that point, and had not said that it wasn't problematic.

anyway my main point was I have a problem when the argument is that female characters are being described as "forced" into sexual activity when
a. that is not shown in the examples given
b. they are enthusiastic participants

literally what I said was that the video presents a critique that is not supported by the examples that they showed. and you're talking about how video game characters are "forced" into activity by being drawn that way. which is insane.

I think there's been a miscommunication here, because you seem to think that I don't find sexism to be an issue in video games (which I do) and you seem to think I think everyone else is dumb (I don't)

so the problem is probably the way I'm communicating

I think appreciating the difference is required for understanding most feminist criticism. My guess is that you think I am alluding to something different?

I guess the issue is that I think saying "forced" implies that within the narrative the character is being forced to do something, whether it be through physical or non-physical means. I didn't really think they provided ANY examples that showed coercive behavior?

I do think wording is important here because you're going to lose people when you say "these female characters are being forced into sexual activity!" when what you really mean are "these are one-dimension characters and the one dimension is being aggressively horny"

so... that doesn't at all prove the idea that fictional characters who are willing and enthusiastic participants in sexual activity within a narrative are being exploited

like, the vital question here is how they are portrayed within the context of the game (while it may be an example of a male power fantasy, that doesn't make it FORCED SEX), not whether or not it would be questionable for actual flesh and blood humans in the real world to be acting that way.

are you concerned that the villain in a story is being "forced" to be evil?

and again, my issue was that the video took examples that served an argument of "video games portray women who are reduced to just being fuckholes and are totally okay with that. kind of an Uncle Tom thing, but with prostitutes" and used them as an example of "women in games are forced to have sex" which they just weren't.

it was like the examples went with a completely different argument and no one noticed or cared

In post 1988, Iecerint wrote:If the villain is an angry black man or a crazy transgendered person or a woman who's crazy due to menopause, then yes, that's a concern.

An explanation like "Well, this black person is angry in this story" would be the corollary counterpoint.

It's not like violations of this sort inherently produce bad art. But if violations of this sort are pervasive, it makes it harder for certain types of people to participate in the art form, which I think is a harm worth worrying about.

the issue is that the author created a character that is a stereotype, not that the character was forced to do something by the creator. Characters literally cannot be forced to do something because they only exist within preconstructed artistic media and can literally only take the course of action that they're written to take. you're not inhibiting a character's free will because they're not actual people don't have free will or consent or whatever.

I understand that it's a popular identity politics type of thing to do to put artistic creations in human terms so that an otherwise unconcerned audience will be manipulated into empathising as if the characters are real people, but it's really a deceitful way of framing that discussion.

how is it critical thinking to pretend that video game characters are real?

if they had presented it as a thought experiment to get you to understand that "just because it's fiction that doesn't make harmful stereotypes okay" that would have been one thing, but they presented it as their central argument.

I enjoy the exploration. I enjoy that it's fairly open-ended right now and the (for me) unexpected story is fairly mysterious and interesting so far.

I guess you only needed a certain amount of yellow glowy box lasers to open the mountain. I still haven't completed the town, the desert, or the orange leaves place. And I know where I have to go for the map things, because I tried one in that place in the windmill and this lady just started talking for like 3 minutes. So still a lot to do. I'm so tired. That ending section was exhausting.

I got stuck at the upper floor for like 3 freaking days-- the panels where the mazes were off from the usual positions. I didn't know you have to click on the lower left corner regardless of where the maze was, and I just kept clicking on the dot and getting frustrated and overthinking. When I finally figured it out I felt so stupid.
completing the witness is a myth

seriously for literally months after playing it i was finding witness puzzles IRL and dreaming about them. i was going mad
