I mean they're still in third place, which would be good enough for the playoffs. I guess it is nice to see them not currently living up to the hype though.

Avatar bet that another western team goes further in worlds than SK, Bro? If they finish at the same level (quarter exit, semi exit, etc.) it's a push?

I have no idea why i'm so betty right now. Hard to argue that SK looks to be the best team in EU

I agree with myk. I think one problem is that people put too much emphasis on in-season play. As long as Elements can make it into the top 6 and solve the morale issues, they have a good shot at finishing highly enough to put them in a place to qualify for worlds through points (if not through Summer split playoffs).

What they really need is a 2-0 week, but that's going to be difficult this week with them playing SK.

I've really enjoyed this week's coach focus for the EU LCS. Been really interesting. They also tend to be more articulate than many of the players.

LCS teams are 36-22 on Blue side. That's a pretty hefty side advantage, and probably enough by now that it's not just happenstance.

Well in LCS play it seems to be less about role counters than it is about being able to put out the right team comp that you want. If you have to counter something an opponent's team comp is doing you can probably do it with the duel 4th+5th picks.

I don't see why they couldn't. They're pretty clearly the 4th best team, and it wouldn't take much for them to make a move on top 3, particularly given that the last slot is determined by a gauntlet play-in where they would only need to win two best of 5's.

Let's say TSM wins summer splits, Cloud 9 gets in on points, CLG is 3rd highest pointholder, Liquid 4th highest, Gravity 5th. Gravity beats their opponents, faces Liquid. Liquid beats them, then faces CLG in a best of 5. I think it's possible that Liquid wins that, even if they played right now. I wouldn't bet even money on it, but in any "moment in time" snapshot, it's easily possible that a worse team will beat a better one.

Also keep in mind that even without roster changes, teams can change a lot in the next 5 months.

I mean, I don't disagree that they're not as good at the Top 3, but you're confusing probabilities for knowable things.

You'd take the bye, but it may not be all bad to be 3rd or 4th seed and get a Best of 5 win under your belt before facing TSM or CLG in their current form.

Sure. It'd be a pretty boring league if the same two teams always were in the finals. I mean, I'd rather it was Dyrus missing out than C9, but it's way more interesting.

Anyway, C9 looked not great at IEM, but I don't read much into that tournament either way. Form against other teams is a small part, but any individual finish isn't worth being concerned about. TSM lost to Gravity, but if they were playing a Best of 5 and lost their first, I'd still bet heavily on TSM. People react too much to recency.

It drives me nuts that so many of these lcs players end all their statements with questionmarks. "We're just looking FORWARD?" "It throws the other team off GUARD?" I recognize this as largely my problem, but it drives me nuts in these interviews. Right now it's Iwilldominate, but basically all of C9 are guilty of it.

i don't get AP Corki... what's the advantage? You get better damage on your valk? that seems... weird.

I guess AP items have higher numbers than AD ones, but the ratios are the same or worse for AP other than valkryie. I guess level 6 R has a better AP ratio, but it's equal at 11 and lower at 16.

Always in for a fantasy thing, but I'm not sure there are enough games to really differentiate people, particularly if there aren't big upsets. Maybe do a combined EU and NA bracket thing (not that they'd be the same bracket, but you'd fill out both).

I'm not sure it is. I wonder if he's changed a lot because from what I've read that doesn't seem like a great personality mesh, but surely they've done their homework on the guy.

so... i think the lucian/graves standard bans on forgiven are good, but a ban on sven's lee sin is at least as worthwhile as a ban on forgiven's caitlyn.

I was asking quadz, sorry. I didn't say he was the reason he lost the series anyway?

The question is about the marginal decrease in performance by a player that comes from a ban, right? Not whether a player is still good on the champion he gets put on.

I think he means the part that Iec missed by that point (i.e. one game).

And people sure make a lot of excuses for Dyrus. Still, it's a long tournament. One game hardly means anything. TSM won both their LCS playoff matches after losing the first game.

I guess that probably means you get out of your avatar bet with me, though I think even with forgiven it was looking like a safe bet for me.

Also, Incarnation to C9 mid confirmed.

Taking an adc to an international tournament while he knows it's his last couple of games with the team. Last time rekkles came in, they had him lined up before worlds already. I guess it's how fnatic deals with substitutions.

I thought rekkles was on fnatic and was agitating to get moved to alliance?

i assume SK has forgiven on contract, forgiven has said he doesn't want to play. So presumably SK would like to get paid for forgiven rather than just give him up to a competitor.

I mean I think he's probably pretty toxic to the environment, but I'm pretty sure he's gone because he wanted to be gone. Which is part of the toxicity.

To be fair your expected income probably continues to go up over time. Quas has a limited lifespan even at that income.

I think today will be a lot more telling than yesterday other than Fnatic establishing them as the class of EU.

Origen vs. H2K will be a much better barometer of where Origen stands than against Giants: whether Origen is a team that merely hopes to make playoffs and sneak into worlds that way or establish themselves as a contender for 1st right away.

Elements vs. UoL I think will be interesting for both sides. UoL should be expected to win, but might be a challenge for them.

ROCCAT vs. Gambit. Either of these teams loses and they're going to face a lot of questions. Wolves should beat Giants, Fnatic should destroy SK. But you never know in a Best of 1.

They seem to be very confident, so I think they're kind of in TSM's place from last split -- their focus is already on getting good enough to beat international competition. That's particularly true since they actually only need to finish second in this split to assure a spot at world's (also if UoL doesn't get second place, they could take third and still assure it).

It's plausible, but very unlikely even if they suddenly become an excellent team overnight.

Currently the points stand at:
TSM: 90
C9: 70
TL: 50
TIP: 30
CLG and Gravity: 10

In the summer you get 90 points for 2nd, 70 for 3rd, 40 for 4th, 20 for 5th&6th. The First place team in Summer split automatically goes.

If they make it into playoffs, they assure at least 90 championship points, which is probably enough to secure a fairly good spot in the gauntlet:

Image

But if they don't make it into playoffs, at best they're likely to have to win 2 best of 5s in the Gauntlet to make it in,* at worst they won't make it at all.

Obviously C9 can't make it in on points alone if they don't make it into playoffs (2nd place gives 90 points and they only have 70), and realistically they probably need at least a 3rd place finish to make it in on points alone.

To me this is fair. It recognizes the performance in the Spring split, making that split matter far more than before.

I know the objection is "but the best NA teams at the moment should go to worlds" and I agree, but if C9 were to make it through the gauntlet from a fairly low place, they will have shown their ability to win close to worlds.

The crucial thing to understand from a "fairness" perspective is that C9 would need to win a whole bunch of games against the best NA talent in order to get a spot. At the moment that seems extraordinarily unlikely. It's probably more likely that C9 gets relegated this season than it is they make worlds. But in that unlikely world where they get a spot through winning a whole bunch of games at the end of the season, they would have earned it.

Spoiler: *Best case scenario for c9 in the gauntlet
Sort of a reasonable top 6 regular season finish of Gravity, TSM, CLG, Dignitas, TIP, TL.

I think it turns out to be the summer split playoffs finishing:
TSM wins (automatic qualifier)
Dignitas 2nd (90 points + 0 from spring) = 90
Gravity 3rd (70 points + 10 from spring) = 80
CLG 4th (40 points + 10 from spring) = 50
TL 5th (20 points + 50 from spring) = 70
TIP 6th (20 points + 30 from spring) = 50

In this case, TSM qualifies automatic, Dignitas qualifies based on points leaving the gauntlet with:

1. Gravity
2. TL
3. C9
4. CLG
5. TIP

So in their best case scenario, C9 will have to win 2 best of 5s to make it into worlds.

Actually having reviewed it, I think C9 will get into the gauntlet no matter what. They may be 4th or 5th in the gauntlet (5th in the gauntlet is really 7th in the points total) and I don't see a way for the 5th points team to have 70 points unless TSM somehow missed the playoffs and I don't think that's possible now.

Another way to look at it is that the team who wins the gauntlet from 4th or 5th seed will have to win as many games as TSM and TL have won in the summer split so far.

My point stands that even if they make it into the gauntlet, they'd have to basically be an entirely different team than they are right now to make worlds.

I don't mean to make this EU > NA or anything, but I think NA teams would have trouble with not only Fnatic but also Origen, much less the Chinese and Korean teams.

But I mean... there's still like 2.5 months before worlds, so so much can change.

Also, of course I sit Sneaky this week.

With league I prefer to look at teams as a snapshot in time. The same players can change markedly in the span of two months. Who knows what the meta will be then and how that will help or hurt a team.

It's a lot easier to develop your large pool when you're winning than it is when you're losing. Fnatic clearly spent a lot of time establishing Olaf as a threat this season probably not because he was the best pick at the moment, but so that other teams had to respect that later down the line.

And a lot of it comes down to the fact they don't play a Best of 2 or 3 series. You tend to see more of those wide champion pool picks when teams are either reacting to a first game or are setting up a second game comp.

this game of Gambit/UoL has a Top runeglaive Gangplank and that's not even the weirdest build in the game. Orianna is going Runeglaive+nashors.

turtle's valk's left something to be desired.

And there's a lot of time left, voided -- depending on what the goal is. TSM will have plenty of chances and time to make worlds.

If TSM finishes 5th or 6th, they finish with 110 points. I don't think that assures them a world's spot, depending on who gets 1st and 2nd in the playoffs.

For example, if TL or TIP finish second, TSM will have to win in the gauntlet if they finish 5th or 6th in playoffs as TL would have 140 points and TIP would have 120 points to TSM's 110.

In fact, if TSM finishes 4th, they'll only get 130 points, so if TL gets second TSM still won't get there. TSM will automatically qualify for worlds if they get at least 3rd place (150 points).

for those who want tons of tiebreaker matches, this next game is the most important: if Elements beats Gambit, it makes it more likely there'll be multiple tiebreakers.

Spoiler: Tie breaker rules
Regular Season Tiebreaker. In the event that multiple teams are tied 7.3.2in the standings at the conclusion of either Regular Season split (as defined as having the same winning percentage), then any teams so tied will be seeded by head-to-head record. If said teams have identical head-to-head records (as defined as each team winning 50% of games between the two teams), said teams will play one tiebreaker game to determine the final standings.
Tiebreaker games will be played following the final game of the Regular Season, but prior to the first day of the Playoffs. Tied teams will compete against each other until there is a winner.
If three or more teams are tied, the head-to-head record of all teams against all other teams involved in the tiebreaker will be considered. If a single team owns a winning record (as defined as winning more than 50% of the games) against every other team in the tiebreaker, they are automatically granted the highest seed available in the tiebreaker, and a new tiebreaker is declared amongst the remaining teams.
If no team in a tiebreaker holds a winning record against all other teams, the following structures will be used:
Three-way tie: A single round-robin will be played among the three 7.3.3teams. If this does not result in a hierarchical ranking of teams (i.e., distinct 2-0, 1-1, and 0-2 team records), then the three teams will be randomly drawn into a single-elimination bracket where one team has a bye into the finals.
Four-way tie: The teams will be randomly drawn into a “Korean-style” 7.3.4or “dual” bracket, where teams play Bo1 matches throughout the tournament. The four teams will be split into two first-round matches;
Version 2.03; June 26, 2015 31
the winners will then face off in Game 3 while the losers face off in Game 4. The winner of Game 3 will be declared the top seed; the loser of Game 3 will face the winner of Game 4 in a contest to determine 2nd/3rd place; and the loser of Game 4 will be declared 4th place.
Five-way tie: The teams will be randomly drawn into a single-7.3.5elimination bracket, where there is a play-in between two teams for the fourth semi-final spot. The tournament will require a 3rd-place match to determine seeding.
Six-way tie: The teams will be randomly drawn into a single-7.3.6elimination bracket, where two teams have byes into the semi-finals. The tournament will require a 3rd-place match and 5th-place match to determine seeding.
Seven-way tie: The teams will be randomly drawn into a single-7.3.7elimination bracket, where one team has a bye into the semi-finals. The tournament will require a 3rd-place match and loser’s bracket to determine seeding.
Eight-way tie: The teams will be randomly drawn into a single-7.3.8elimination bracket. The tournament will require a 3rd-place match and loser’s bracket (including 7th-place match) to determine seeding.
Nine-way tie: The teams will be randomly drawn into a single-7.3.9elimination bracket, where there is a play-in between two teams for the final spot. The tournament will play out until all seeds are determined one through nine.
Ten-way tie: The teams will be randomly drawn into a single-7.3.10elimination bracket where there are two play-in matches among four teams. The tournament will play out until all seeds are determined one through ten.
Side selection for all tiebreaker games will be determined by a coin flip.

"If ROC loses va ORG, EL will place in 6th place ahead of ROC and GMB (4-0 head-to-head overall) and only 1 tie-break match will be played today betwen ROC and GMB for 7th"

so basically just a sad, sad tiebreaker to avoid the potential for relegation.

If ROCCAT wins I think they play off for that 5th spot, which is important to avoid Fnatic, although honestly maybe they'd rather play UoL instead of H2K to get to the 3rd place match and get the maximum circuit points to help in the gauntlet.

That's actually an interesting question. If you're ROCCAT or Giants, who have zero circuit points so far, do you care whether you're 5th or 6th seed?

If you're ROCCAT or Giants, you probably want at least 4th place to enter the gauntlet, which requires a win against either H2K (for the 6th seed) or UoL (for the 5th seed). If you do that, you assure at least a 4th place finish. I think it's very unlikely either can beat Origen or Fnatic in a best of 5, but obviously you'd prefer Origen.

I rate the best chance as playing UoL and then Fnatic if only because it puts your fate more in your hands if I make my assumption that neither team can beat Origen (or Fnatic)

The reason is that I think there's a gap between Origen and H2K, which is only marginally stronger than UoL. The problem is that if UoL get to the second round, they qualify on points BEFORE Origen, even if Origen gets second place. That places Origen in the Gauntlet, which makes the Gauntlet really hard to win. However, if ROC beat UoL, H2K loses to Origen, and ROC beat H2K then Origen makes it in points leaving the Gauntlet as something like:

1. H2K
2. UoL
3. ROC
4. GIA

That's still really hard to climb as it requires ROC or GIA to win 3 best of 5s, but at least they're in games that they can plausibly win.

The path of beating H2K followed by beating Origen would be really hard, but even then it DOESN'T MATTER unless (a) UoL lose their first match or (b) you can beat Fnatic for the win of it all. That's because UoL will have 110 points if they make it to the semis, more than the 90 you get for a second place finish.

I think it is possible that c9 will have the top spot in the gauntlet. Kind of unlikely but possible... Would probably hear some grumbling about that!

EDIT: Actually I don't think that's possible. I think they can tie in points with DIG if DIG gets 3rd, but the tie breaker is where you finish in the summer playoffs. So the best C9 can hope for is to be the second gauntlet seed and play two best of 5s rather than three if they're the third or fourth seed.

Making the assumption that each match has a 50/50 shot of being won by either side, here are the chances of each team ending up in each spot.

haha exactly. I've updated the charts to include "chance of making worlds" under the 50/50 per match assumption, but obviously the farther we take this the more we deviate from reality.

I'm surprised so many people picked Gravity, fwiw. TSM hasn't looked great, but neither has Gravity in the last couple of weeks of the season.

I don't think teams win or lose based on how much I like them.

So I think Dignitas is officially out of worlds. Gravity finished with 10 points last season, so they'd take the last spot if they lose tomorrow.

You did!

everyone but pickemgenius and glork picked UoL to win (Glork had ROCCAT in 5)
The Bulge, Voided, me, Broseidon, Siv, Nexus, Astralfire, hiplop had UoL in 5 games.

28 entries total, for context.

Right now, either BRO or Glork will be perfect after this game, depending on who wins (with 12 points).

what a series. obviously kind of sloppy at times, but i'd prefer sloppy and exciting to precise and boring.

it's interesting that only two people picked CLG to win their semi final up until I did, and after that only one person picked Impulse to win. These are listed in chronological order of selection (so hito made his choices first, voided last)

yeah ignore the point totals there. It got off when I deleted voided's extra entry, but the ones I posted are correct. I'm not planning on updating the image file. I just wanted to post the winner picks.

gravity finally pulling away, but the fact that they were up 12-2 in kills and yet only up about 2k was pretty funny.

In post 4194, BROseidon wrote:TSM did a really good job keeping up in farm and objectives. Each kill is worth about 300 gold, so being up three kills equates to about 3k gold.

I think your math is off.

I assume you mean being up 10 kills is worth 3k gold, but that's really only true if there are no assists.
