Ignoring the official start date of winter
No leaves on trees
Average daily temperatures below 40
Snow possible at anytime
I wore a hoodie today and it was in the 60s. That's fall. Leaves still on the trees also and my daughter is still playing outside soccer. That's fall.
This week in pictures, Nov 15, 2014. Number 35
A home is covered in snow in a neighborhood just south of Buffalo, New York, following an overnight winter storm that dumped a reported five feet of lake-effect snow on the area in Hamburg, New York, Nov. 19,2014. The storm was part of a very large weather system that dropped temperatures to record lows over a huge area of the United States. Mark Webster/EPA

Month Hi Lo Snow (averages)
October 43° 59° 0.3"
November 34° 47° 11"
December 24° 36° 25.5"
Not going to bother with the leaves-on-trees thing because that's generally unmeasurable hogwash.
So by your own qualia, winter generally begins in November in Buffalo, and sometimes earlier!
