I readily admit to being ignorant of Pleasanton, Dublin and San Ramon. I've driven through them! And I think once I parked my car in San Ramon so I could board a bus to Tahoe, but... that's the extent of it.

and can add those to the list of things i will bring.

I will probably just legit bring a suitcase of board games. If that's enough room.

Captain Sonar is a ton of fun but I much prefer it with 6 rather than the full 8 and suggest both captain's know how to play prior to game.

Why 6? Is first mate just not an especially interesting role? It seemed like it might be that way from a skim of the rules but I'd be quite happy if it is still good with 6 since it'd mean that the game is effectively flexible enough to support 6-8 rather than a hard 8.

Yeah you can play variants of 2 and 4 as well, but yeah I found being the Engineer AND First Mate to be way more tense and entertaining then just being first mate, especially with an inexperienced captain.

Edit: I don't want to give away any strategy, but basically the captain and navigator have a bunch on their plate, and the engineer basically plays the role of angry backseat driver and mostly has to be shouting needs to the cpt and also deciding when to surface. If the cpt is inexperienced, the first mate is basically just listening to the engineer complain with a board full of charged powers just trying to politely suggest the captain listens to the engineer so you can possibly maybe try to interrupt his flow to say "stop, [insert ability]" which is also a captain ability. It's just seems a lot smoother when the engineer and first mate are one person cause it just takes a 4th, mostly unnecessary voice out of your ear and gives the 5th/6th players a more tense and busy experience.
