GOT marathon on HBO. They are on season 2 right now.
Of all tyrannies,a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
Yeah I need to happy vibes to go away and for people to screw each other over more. Lets get John stabbing Sam in the back literally. "things I do for love"
God, that Sam plot armor just took me straight out of the show. He had no reason to be on the battlefield IC or OOC. They could have put him in the crypt to ZERO change in the story. He did nothing while he was there except for get attacked multiple times yet somehow mirculously survive despite the fact stronger, better warriors getting attacked even once the same exact way died.

It's strongly hinted at that the game of thrones is his recounting of events, as such, just imagine he was in the crypt and didn't want to seem like a coward. Its my head cannon now.
It all felt too easy though. I think more prominent sacrifices needed to be made to make the ending feel more earned. It feels like a really cheap end to the sword of damocles that's been hanging over the show for 7 years.
the coming of winter was the main antagonist of the story, and that the fight for the iron throne was supposed to be a costly distraction. Seems like it was the other way around... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I thought the opposite and expected the night king to die this episode. Show is called Game of Thrones after all. Hope more people doe the following episodes.

Totally unsatisfying. I figured this would happen though. Since the bullshit with jaime coming out the lake it feels like everyone has plot armour now. And it's not just the important characters. Brienne? Tormund? Why are they still here.
This should have been a crushing defeat. The first city, just past the wall and they can't convince the capital to send an army.
The night king should have got to kings landing and made the rest of the living realise they can't ignore this and have the real last stand. But it's just over a few miles past the wall? Fucking ew. If it's so easy why was the wall built in the first place. This does not justify many seasons of "winter is coming".

I'm personally happy they didn't fall into the OOOH THE REAL THREAT WAS THE MAGIC ZOMBIES THE WHOLE TIME trope. I've been dreading that since like Season 2. I got into the series because of all the politicking and throne drama. Magic zombies were boring fantasy cliches. I was so scared that all this buildup and the Red Wedding and everything would be meaningless because zombies make everyone forget all that and work together. I'm pleased that they're going back to the series roots for the last few episodes.
I also prefer the politicking aspect. It is just that, if that was the plan all along, I wish they hadn't invested so much plot time into the White Walker menace if they were not going to actually give it the ending they were heavily dropping clues for.

I hope Cersi wins now. Would be a great twist ending. Is she still pregnant with that baby?
This. I think they needed a conceivable way to have the final battle be somewhat competitive, and Dany's forces getting annihilated by AOTD is the best way to do it.
The best thing the series could have done to remind people it's still GoT is kill of someone like Arya. If she lept at him and failed to kill but then Brann just sticks out a blade and stabs him in the back. Omg, I would have been pissed but also would have completely realized why I watched this show.
I don't have a problem with the battle against the dead being fought and won mid-season like this. It doesn't mean it wasn't the most important threat or that Cersei is the main villain. The army of the dead absolutely was the existential threat, but you don't always get to choose when you deal with that threat. Defeating the Night King has had serious consequences, leaving them severely weakened. But if they hadn't fought him now, it would have been too late.
It leaves it interesting to find out what happens now. I like that the next few episodes remain hard to predict. They seem smaller stakes objectively but subjectively we're still invested in what the outcomes will be for various characters and how/if they can still defeat Cersei.
I kinda hope it's not by Arya attack again though, despite the 'green eyes' prophecy. It would seem too samey. I wonder if Dany will try to burn Cersei but set off more wildfire so that King's Landing explodes, taking Dany and Jon with it, leaving Tyrion and Sansa to rule together in the end. That would definitely be a bittersweet ending, dunno if there's enough wildfire remaining for that to happen though.
Also I thought it was neat that all the religions combined to defeat the Night King. Many faced god (Arya), drowned god (Theon), lord of light (Beric, Melisandre), the seven (Hound), the old gods (Bran).
Things I didn't like about the episode were the plot armour around Sam in particular, some of the battle tactics on both sides, and the wights in the crypt scene. Also Bran.

It was a stylistic difference between the book and the show. I think there's enough deviations in the plot of GoT/ASoIaF already that it's entirely possible the last book will be resolved in a different order tbh
