Best Mods?

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Wed Oct 13, 2004 4:42 pm

I know there are existing scummy awards for Best Role, Best Theme, etc. But as a new mafiascum player, I'd really want to play under the best mods around.

A
great mod
for me would be one who:

1) Writes intro scenes, death scenes, mafia scenes well
2) Introduces innovative - but not unduly confusing - twists and themes to the game
3) Is always around and always prompt to post

Your suggestions on which mods you really enjoyed playing under?

Well, there's certainly a collection that are definitely considered (at least by me) to be top-echelon mods: Dragon Phoenix and MeMe come to mind immediately, Phoebus and a non-flaky Cuban Smoker shortly thereafter, and there are many more extremely solid mods who fall just under these four on my list.

Let me also add to your list of qualities:

4) Thinks through all the possible consequences of the interplay of the roles they create, and decides on courses of action before the game starts.
5) Is capable of doing routine vote counts with too much trouble.

Although not really a "quality" of a great mod, the one thing I would suggest looking for above all else is experience. The more games you've modded, the more you know exactly what things can go wrong, and how to be better prepared for them.

CaptainBlicero is great with pirate flavor ;)

MMCL is good too; I played a newbie by him and he was very interactive with the players.

I miss Spookylou and Narninian...

There are plenty of other great mods too...but I'll let others can attest to them...

4-5 are great qualities too. Thanks, cam.

An interactive mod (like MMCL) sounds fun too, STD.

Can we say "most" than "all"? Or you'll have to downgrade me. ;)

I was thinking of starting a topic on this actually. With certain complex themes, one forgets (atleast I have) at times to look at every last detail.
What matters to the players?
The fact that it was a fun game in the end? Or that the mod was actively changing/had changed the setup to fix certain issues - balance mostly.
Again, do you think a mod should mention this? or what the players don't know, can't hurt the mod? ;)

Is capable of doing routine vote counts with too much trouble.
Cam hit the nail right on the head here, i hate mods who can do votecounts at the flick or their wrist.
I want mods to struggle with their votecounts, watch them sweat to think of that number that comes after 4 and wether or not that tiny smidgeon of text in the left-bottom corner was actually a vote or not. I want them to re-read every post five times to see if maybe somebody actually DID vote, but they did so in the post's background colour.
It shows that they care and really want to put effort in the game, those mods that can do postcounts in five minutes before they leave for work shouldn't be allowed to mod.

I like Macros' games best myself. To me he's the best in point 1 and one of the best in point 2. He's not always the fastest in giving vote counts though.
One more positive point is that he always has great themes.
Coming close after him are DP, Phoebus and MeMe.

A bit downside to Macros' games IMHO is that he doesn't reveal alignments.. That sucks, I think...

I find that worse in Phoebus' games. He does not reveal alignments and sometimes has thematically good characters (like Harry Potter) be scum. That makes it hard to impossible for the town to win.
In Macros' games at least scum is scum.

*crushed*

Doesn't it add a fun element?!
And I can't help it if you did not pick up on the laughing and dancing curses!!
And in my defence, thematically good - maybe - but their motives for evil are perfectly good. :P

We're on reply 11 and no one has yet thrown props at Cadmium and Leonidas for London Mafia? For shame, people. For shame!

a) I too enjoy Macros' games, but he, like myself, has the potential to make a lot of errors in the course of the game (perhaps less so, but I think Werebear might fall under this category as well...all 3 of us certainly fail quality number 5). This is self-admitted on his part, so I'm not partaking in Macros-bashing or anything of the sort. But I wouldn't have put him in the list of best mods because of these, even though I've always enjoyed his games.

b) LOL at shelper.

Well I certainly do it too, and I'm not saying it's that bad of a thing. However, I still maintain that working out every last detail
is
a quality of a great mod, even if the converse isn't necessarily true.

Wow, honestly, I had forgotten about this. Wasn't there supposed to be a sequel coming?

There will be, mathcam!! There will definitely be a sequel.

All I need to do, is wait for Leonidas to show up again ;).

Is he essential? You could just get a temporary replacement for him for the second installment. ;)

Why bother with the rest of the trilogy? I've already won.

But in all seriousness, I PMed one of you (can't remember which, it was too long ago) and you'd said the second game starts once convict mafia ends. Just look at the thread. It's gonna be at LEAST another -3 months before it finishes. :P

When Convict Mafia was finished, I left for Paris to join Leo at his wedding the same week. We even discussed London Mafia. Since the wedding, Leo doesn't have enough time to regularly check the site. I'm still waiting for his return.

And Phoebus, I could get a temporary replacement for him but then Sangreal Mafia will be on hold again ;). But seriously, I can't do that! Leo was really looking forward to moderate this game. We'll just have to be patient.

For me, a good mod:

Gives a vote count at least once per page.
Ends a day within 24 hs of the desicive vote.
Gets the choices in right

I drool over my ingenious night scenes.

If I only had the time to be creative. School sucks.

I like Macros. Entertaining scenes, randomness, and creative roles.
Ever wonder why that edit button is obnoxiously placed in the center like that? Yeah, that's cause of me.. and trust me, it's better off there.

DS and Polotet came up with one of my favorite setups ever, a great storyline (yes, a storyline in a mafia game), some really great roles, and some good (and thematically accurate, right down to the writing style) flavor text in Discworld Mafia: Anarchy in Ankh-Morpork. The one problem was a little error in a recruitment choice that really hurt one group of scum. :? Otherwise, everything was great. I'm still waiting on the sequel. ;)
