Open 318: By Nomination Only (Game Over)

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Tue Jun 21, 2011 4:13 pm

Post by Equinox »

Eleven contestants, chosen for their intellectual and oratory abilities, were given the chance to win a fabulous $1 million cash prize, split among the winners. Among these contestants were three studio employees, carefully hand-picked for their deceptive skills. Their objective was to maintain the studio's financial interests by forcing all of the contestants to become ineligible to win. Therefore, the challenge for the contestants was clear: They were to find and eliminate these confederates.

At the end of each episode, the contestants would be given a chance to vote one player out of the game. There was, however, a caveat; every other episode, the studio would nominate three contestants, and the contestants would only be allowed to eliminate one of those three players. Would the studio play it safe and choose three honest contestants, ensuring the survival of their moles? Or would they raise the stakes by allowing one of their own to be sacrificed?

It was to be the televised reality show of the season. After all, this was... "By Nomination Only."

Rules

(References: Hoopla, Nobody Special, Vel-Rahn Koon, zoraster)

Significant deviations from my standard rule set are highlighted in
dark red
.

General

  1. Be familiar with the sitewide rules and guidelines.
  2. Personal attacks will not be tolerated. Use of homophobic, racist, sexist, or any other derogatory slurs falls under this rule. Keep it civil.
  3. Unless otherwise specified in your role PM or by me, you may not communicate outside of this thread while the game is running.
  4. Do not quote or post any screen captures of any private communication to which you have access. This includes game-related PMs, QuickTopics, and instant messaging logs. Paraphrasing is okay.
  5. If it is not visible to the naked eye, do not post it. This includes, but is not limited to: invisible text, tiny text, encrypted text, and text hidden within tags. Spoiler text, however, is allowed, as long as it is used within reason.
  6. If you have the ability to edit your posts, don't use it in my game.
  7. Regular
    dark red
    - and boldface
    goldenrod
-colored text are reserved for the moderator. All other formatting is fair game with the provision that you do not impersonate me. I won't be amused.

Activity

  1. Prods will be issued to players if they have not posted within a 48-hour period. Players who have been prodded have 24 hours to respond
    in the game thread
    before a replacement is sought.
  2. Players who have been prodded 3 times are subject to replacement without further notice.
  3. If you anticipate being away for at least 48 hours, please PM me or post a V/LA notice in the thread with the expected date of your return.

Day

  1. Days will have a fixed deadline of 14 real-time days. Deadline extensions will be granted only in extreme circumstances.
  2. Lynches are decided in one of two ways: If there is a simple majority before the deadline, a lynch will occur and the game will change phase; however, if deadline hits, the lynch will occur by plurality vote (i.e., the player with the most votes will be lynched). In the event of a tie, the player who reached his/her current amount of votes first will be lynched. Please refer to the Setup post for more information about lynching mechanics in this game.
  3. Once majority is reached, no further votes or unvotes will count.
  4. Votes must be on a separate line, flushed left, and bolded (e.g.,
    Vote: Equinox
). The same applies to vote revocations (e.g.,
    Unvote
). Unvotes are preferred but not necessary when switching votes (e.g.,
    Unvote, Vote: Equinox
). Use of the vote tags (e.g., VOTE: Equinox) is optional. Abbreviations are okay as long as it's clear for whom the vote is made.
  5. If I think it's a vote, it is a vote.
  6. All players, including the lynched player, are allowed to discuss in twilight phase until I post the death scene.
  7. Dead players may make one "Bah!" post that contains no game-related content.

Night

  1. There will be no night phase in this game.
  2. Players who have a night action to submit must send it in before I lock the thread between day phases. I accept provisional actions up until the end of the day, at which time I will use the last action submitted.

Moderator Actions

  1. Flavor is for entertainment purposes only and has no significance in the game.
  2. If there is an error in the vote count or something similar, bold your concern in the thread. Please PM me for all other issues.
  3. Violations of these rules will result in consequences. Pretending to violate these rules will also result in consequences. What those consequences are depend on the severity of the action and on the game state.
  4. Any situation not covered above will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

I reserve the right to add, modify, or remove rules as necessary. I will notify you of all changes in the thread.

Please PM me if you need clarification on anything in the rules.

Remember: Have fun, and play to win the game!

Setup

This game is using the Nomination Mafia mechanic proposed by Hoopla. The following rules are in place:

  • This game is vanilla and nightless.
  • On odd-numbered days, normal lynching mechanics apply.
  • On even-numbered days, the nomination mechanic comes into play. At the start of the day, the mafia get to select any three players (including themselves) to be available for lynch. I will announce who the nominated players are for that day, and votes may only go on one of the three nominated players.
  • The mafia are allowed to talk during the day.
  • A player must be lynched each day; "No Lynch" is not an option. Please refer to the Rules post for information about lynching.

Three players received:

Welcome to Open 318, XXX!

You are a
mafia goon
with
YYY
and
ZZZ
.

Before the start of each even-numbered day, you may select three players (including yourselves) to be available for the day's lynch. No other player may be lynched that day.
You must submit your selections before the end of the previous day (e.g., submit your choices for Day 2 before Day 1 ends)!
The day ends when I come in to lock the thread. If I do not receive your selections in time, I will select 3 players at random.

You may communicate with your fellow mafia goons in this QuickTopic.

You win when the number of mafia equals or exceeds the number of remaining town players or when nothing can prevent such an occurrence; at least one member of the mafia must remain standing.

The game thread is here. Please confirm by responding to this PM with your role.

Eight players received:

Welcome to Open 318, XXX!

You are a
townie
.

You have no special abilities beyond the right to vote. However, each even-numbered day, you will be restricted to voting one of three players nominated by the mafia for that day's lynch. Normal lynching mechanics apply on odd-numbered days.

You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated and at least one member of the town remains standing.

The game thread is here. Please confirm by responding to this PM with your role.

^ Disagree. I tend to believe people who claim with conviction off the bat in real life games, or at least find the action useful in gaining a read, and that extends somewhat to forum games.

And what cognitive dissonance is that?

I am not sure you are scum or anything, and you're clearly reaction fishing of some kind, but I don't care. There is no point at all to your claim.

how interesting

my experiment in trying to confirm to my role PM by saying I was a jester seemed to have worked :p

anyways, I'm not too sure what cognitive dissonance is but it sounds clever.

@PZ: so why did you claim so early?

and finally

It's that thing you do when you try to hold oil and water in your brain, and you squeeze and squeeze but they just won't mesh.

For example, some player, let's just call her Mumm-Ra, might say that say that claiming in an all vanilla game is unnecessary and pointless. Which is certainly true. But when Mumm-Ra decides to then vote someone for doing something that's unnecessary and pointless, well, that there's some dissonance.

By saying I don't think you are scum for that action (nor town), I thought it was pretty clear that it was an RV.

I don't see a townie mindset for it.

Also:

This certainly doesn't read as a random vote.

Amrun, why back away from the vote so quickly? What do you see as the purpose of an "RV"? Is your current read on Papa Zito leaning towards town or scum?

Then you are certainly not reading it correctly (or we are using different definitions, which is possible).

Asking you why you claimed isn't from a townie mindset?

When I saw it, it made me immediately paranoid that you were doing some combination of a) claiming early so people like FenChurch woulld get a townread on you, b) setting up a situation where any response was construed as scummy. But I could also see a c) scenario, where you are reaction fishing as town.

So I decided to place a vote on you to see what shook out. The vote was not to indicate that you are town or scum in my view, and a vote in post 2 should always be seen as random imho.

P-edit: I think I explained above, but my read on PZ is null.

so from what i understand, Fenchurch's initial town read on PZ is due to the fact that claiming off the bat in RL is a towntell?

Lame I may be, but foolish I'm not. Zito had a nice newby trap, and he caught, unsurprisingly, a newby. A particulary uncautious newby for jumping at such an obvious trap and for that reason not a great bandwagon to start with. I'm sure Zito can see this too. I am quite sure about this, because Zito is a very smart person who knows what "cognitive dissonance" means.

Or does he? To me it seems he just knows the words, but doesn't know their meaning. Cognitive dissonance is a theory from theoretical psychology, which states that a human will try to diminish the disparity between what he knows or believes and what he observes. Rationalization is usually the tool used for that. It's hardly applyable to the situation Zito created. Here on MS, cognitive dissonance starts to mean: "scum know more and this will seep into their normal posts". When this is read carefully, one will notice that this is exactly the opposite from what the term actually means.

Zito takes it even further, to let it mean "he says something and does something that doesn't follow from it". And then he hides it in a nice box with the label "cognitive dissonance", which has nothing to do with it. It isn't even a contradiction, for the simple reason that right from the newby games, people are told that they shouldn't claim right away. Amrum can hardly be blamed for reflexively voting Zito without thinking through. Not everybody remembers that claiming early was antitown because it gave away information to the scum.

Zito's trap never had the intention of catching scum, and zito's first serious vote is hidden by a smokescreen of syllables which most of the people can't see through.
"I died and turned into a Roman. It's very distracting."
