NY 143: Mafia on the Gulf Coast (Game Over!)

Mafia on the Gulf Coast

Welcome to Galveston, Texas, a formerly important city that started to dwindle as Houston became the major port in the area (a change spurred by the 1900 hurricane, but I digress). On this fine summer day, everything is going as normal, ridiculous drought levels notwithstanding, and twenty-odd characters have checked into a small hotel on Seawall Boulevard. Most just want to have a nice vacation at the beach; others... well...

The next morning, some of the patrons are discovered dead by the housekeeping staff. Individuals who look like Galveston police round up the surviving guests, twenty-one in all, and tell them they're the only suspects.

"The reasonable thing for us to do," observes the apparent commanding officer at the scene, "would be for us to take you all in for interrogation at this point. However, there are enough of you that I'm not sure that's going to be feasible, so here's what's gonna happen: You're all going to stay here, in this hotel, until everything's resolved. You can expect the murderers to try to kill off somebody else every night. I expect you to give me another corpse at the end of every day."

Rules:

1. This is a game. Play to win, but also to have fun and to allow the other players to have fun. Repeated or extreme violations of this rule are modkillable offenses.
1a. Claiming another player is your scumpartner, truthfully or not, will result in a modkill.
2. Votes must be in
bold
or between vote tags for them to count, like this:
Vote: saberwolf.
Unvoting is not necessary, but your fellow players will appreciate it.
3. I will try to post a vote count at least once every 24 hours.
4. I may be God, but I am not infallible. If I make a mistake, please tell me.
4a. Please bold all in-thread requests to the mod (
especially
V/LA declarations) so that I see them.
5. While the game is in progress, do not discuss it except when and where I specifically allow you to. (You may always PM me to talk, but I cannot guarantee an answer to any question you ask.)
5a. I post QuickTopics after the game. Take that into account when deciding what to write in one.
5b. Robust cryptography, steganography, invisible and effectively-invisible text are all forbidden.
6. Similarly, do not quote private mod-player communications. You may paraphrase, though. If you're not sure if it crosses the line, run it by me.
7. Days will be deadlined at two weeks. Except for replacements, deadlines are non-negotiable.
7a. At deadline, half of a majority will be required to lynch.
There will be no reduced number of votes when there are 7 or fewer players.

7b. In the event that multiple players are eligible to be lynched at deadline, the lynchee will be the player with the most votes.
7c. In the event that Rule 7b does not specify a single player to be lynched, the lynchee will be the player of the ones tied for most votes who had more votes than each of the others more recently than they had fewer.
8. V/LA: Declare it where I can be expected to see it. This game, your sig, and a PM to me all meet that standard; other games and the V/LA thread do not.
If I don't know about it, it’s your fault.
If it’s too long, I'll ask for you to find your own replacement.
9. Prods will go out after 72 hours without a post (unless the player is on V/LA). The proddee will then have 48 hours to post in thread or they will be replaced. If you post before I get around to handing out the prod, you avoid the prod; similarly, if you return before I find a replacement, you can stay in the game. The third time you enter prod range, I won't bother prodding; instead, I'll just start looking for a replacement.
10. If enough players are voting for No Lynch to make any other majority impossible, the day will end in No Lynch.
11. When a lynch is reached, the game will enter twilight until I come to lock the thread.
All players alive immediately before lynch may talk during twilight,
but don't expect it to be particularly long.
12. Nights will last approximately 72 hours, unless I need to find a replacement during the night. If I do, the replacement will have no fewer than 48 hours to get caught up.
12a. If you know in advance that you will be V/LA for most or all of the night phase, you are encouraged to submit night actions ahead of time.
12b. Any night actions I do not receive will be treated as "no action" PMs.
13. If you die, stop posting until after the game is over. You are allowed one "bah" post provided it contains no game-related content (something like "Go town!" is acceptable; something like "My tracking results were X and Y" is not).
14. If, for whatever reason, I decide to edit your post, it will be in
blue bold
. Don’t use that style.
15. Anything that would be illegal to actually do is also illegal to fake.
16. If I find that I've left something off, or that something needs clarification, I reserve the right to update these rules. I will tell you if/when that happens.
Discretion is the better part of valor.
If I helped lynch you, you deserved it.

Retired from playing for the foreseeable future.

Role PMs are being sent out; please confirm in the manner specified in your role PM. The game will begin when 19 out of 21 players have confirmed.

At least one player will get a PM that looks like this:
Vanilla Townie PM wrote:Welcome to Mafia on the Gulf Coast,
Player
. You are a
Vanilla Townie
. Each night, you may... sit back and do nothing. You have no special abilities.

You win when all threats to the town are eliminated.
Discretion is the better part of valor.

mb53 and Super Smash Bros. Fan have 72 more hours to confirm before I start searching for replacements. Also, any players with night talk capabilities have 24 more hours to discuss.

Day 1 begins!
With 21 alive, it takes 11 to lynch and 6 to lynch at deadline.

Deadline:
Wednesday, November 30, ~11:59 PM US CST (GMT-6)
Discretion is the better part of valor.

Jumping from proposed Policy Lynch to a vote with a really bad reason? Someone is nervous scum.

(Amrun is not a good PL candidate, by the way. She's pretty awesome.)

Lowell is always an awesome policy lynch, but in reality-land, policy lynches are mostly a waste of town's time. It's better than a totally random vote, however.

Of course my vote on Zombie whatever is weak; it's based off of one post. I do happen to think that that particular post is pretty bad, though. That's how the beginnings of games always are. That's how games
work
.

Now I'm feeling uncomfortable about your alignment already. I know you're more competent than to think your reason for voting is valid, and yet you're voting me for my vote being weak. It doesn't add up.

I've got two fairly weak reasons, and on Page One, that's a major case. First, your vote hopping. Second, your poor reasoning and seeming opportunism with who you selected to vote. You're absolutely right, if this were page ten, I should get laughed out of town for calling that a good case, but with 20 posts down, I feel fairly good about it.

Vote hopping in rvs is completely, 100% invalid to the point of silliness. It's also not a scumtell anyway.

What is opportunistic about my voting?

I jumped off of a seemingly viable policy lynch option on someone I'd dearly love to policy lynch (and have plenty of meta backing up how much he fucking annoys me and other lynch attempts out of sheer annoyance, sometimes successful) to vote for someone who made an awkward RVS. That is literally the opposite of opportunistic and I'm not sure you understand what that word means.

A. Policy lynch proposed = Opportunity
B. Jumping on said PL with flimsy reasons (It's not like he's Deity Kabuto or Beck) = Opportunism

I'm not butthurt and you never "caught" me. I attacked you and you were like "ZOMG SCUM IZ AFTER ME!!!" You pretty much derped the whole game and I would rather you not do that here but I find you much much better than Lowell and Furc hence why I voted Lowell.

In post 20, Amrun wrote:Lowell is always an awesome policy lynch, but in reality-land, policy lynches are mostly a waste of town's time. It's better than a totally random vote, however.

I disagree though I can't remember a game where there was a day 1 policy lynch. PL is pro-town. Getting rid of a hard to read/useless player is in the towns best interest. Now if there's a really really good case on someone they should be the days lynch.

These statements contradict each other me thinks. You think "RVS" hoping is NOT scummy but you think "akward RVS posts" are scummy.
