Scummies 2004 Award Presentation

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sun Jun 05, 2005 11:18 pm

Post by Phoebus »

Well, after some considerable delay for whatever reasons,
finally
here are the scummie awards for 2004, shorn of any possible frills.
I take full responsibility for the delay and lack of frills, so if you need to interface with me, you have my PM box. ;)

Over the course of the nomination period, some new awards were discussed, some old ones were axed.
One of the awards added this year, along with the Road to Rome forums, was:

The best inexperience-challenged player:

A pseudo euphemism because of the various connotations of the word "experienced", the inexperience challenged players are the ones in newbie games who show the newbies the ropes. The proverbial "old hands" and the jury agreed that the
mathcam
is the most genial, the sharpest and other such positively adjectived old hand there is.
His help in numerous newbie games has, I'm sure, benefitted a lot of players.
Let's give him a hand!

Best newbie performance

Now it might only be apt that after the old hands, we celebrate the new blood. Now whether mathcam had any hand in his grooming or not, though I believe he is a godfather, there one such newbie who's not so new anymore but has shown great skill as a player.
He showed it in his first game, Newbie 73, and he's shown it again and again and again. Even the duracell bunny is amazed. So we know that
Seol
is no nine day wonder.
Give it up for, Seol!

The George W Bush Award for the Funniest role claims

Not much can be said about this other than: Read Convict mafia end game. It had the remaining players in tears of mirth and it will probably have you too.
Leonidas and Corsato win this award for their claim of
God
.
Amen!

Prof. Mafia Award

Hardly has there been a game last year when
jeep
's principles like Lynch All Liars or his tells haven't been used or mentioned.
For his contribution to mafia discussion, jeep IS Prof. Mafia.
We look forward to hearing the dates of publication for some of his incomplete work in his acceptance speech.

The Addict:

Ever since
PeaceBringer
has burst on to the mafiascum scene, he has been prolific. While it is safe to say that he has mellowed down to some extent and
conformed
to much less, (;)) PeaceBringer is probably the Knight in shining armor for MeMe's post or perish brigade -- our award for the most prolific player.
Have a beer!

Best new role:

A
flying pumpkin
has been dispatched and is currently en route to the Sydney home of Wacky for his Lurker/Day Serial Killer in Paced Mafia.
Soon, we should have some delicous Wac...er...pumpkin pie!

Best mafia catcher

The less said about this, the better. I get nightmares and start twitching when I play with
jeep
, more so if he IS scum. ;)
His actions speak louder than words -- go read any of the games he's played. jeep is this year's
Paragon of Mafia Hunters

The Kenny Award:

Purely through numbers,
mlaker
is this year's winner.
Why is he so popular? I'm sure he'd like to know. For now, we're just sending his various missing body parts back to him in a sack, the result of so manyh night killings, as his award.

The Hannibal Lecter Award

While I'm rather miffed and sceptical about mathcam's title at the same time (:P), there can be no denying that
Leonidas
flattened all competition as the
Oliphaunt
in Trouble in Minas Tirith

Best mafia -- the Oscar

I'm sure jeep would've called this the "one who got away" had he played Tuthreded mafia. Then again, maybe we might've needed another winner.
Special guest
meaning of life 42
awards
Talitha
the award.
Little does he know that it's a promissary note for a year's worth of babysitting.
Tal cackles in glee as she grabs jeep, hops on a broom and flies off to Oregon.
Maybe it was a consipracy...

Planet Thread
Ship Thread

The Coffee on the Monitor Award

I wouldn't dare upstage the funniest player by trying to make a joke here, so I'll let
MeMe
do what she does best[?] and amuse you all with some witty one liners in her acceptance speech.

So those are these year's awards.
There are some notable exceptions -- some by choice, others by lack of nominations, something that plagued the awards this year.
Hopefully, a remedy has been found in the continuing nomination thread and next year will be a little more vibrant.

Last but not the least, a huge THANK YOU! to the jury this year:
Jaguar
Talitha
Cadmium
Fuldu
Yaw

You guys were great!

Thank you all and hopefully I'll be seeing you all next year.
Congratulations once again, to all the winners!
Your happiness is intertwined with your outlook on life.

Phoebus -- you're
incapable
of shearing all frills! :) Quite an enjoyable read.

Congratulations, all -- what a fun year on mafiascum. I look forward to decades more!

Woo Hoo, my first scummie and I get two! Thanks all. Phoebus STILL managed to get a jab in there. ;) Yes, I've fallen way behind on the article publications. After losing my disk drive, I lost the motivation. I'll see what I can do, though. Right after ShogiVariants.com is done...

OK, Phoebus-- What do I do with the 2003 scummies? All get removed and only people who got awards this year get it? or If you received a scummie, you keep it for "life"?

I vote for life. At least, if I win one, I'd cherish it forever and ever.

Speaking of which, I've got my eye on that Kenny Award. 8)

Congrats and well deserved all :) Thanks Phoebus and jury.

I vote for life. Can we tack on an '03/'04/etc somewhere in the image without cluttering it completely? And then there's the question of what to do with people *cough*jeep*cough* who win more than one scummy...can you stack them? Should we? That might change my opinion....

Or we could resize the old ones to half-dimensions, which might alleviate that somewhat...

If you're asking me, get rid of the past titlepic.
Otherwise, soon we'd have almost everyone have a titlepic.

When you win a scummie, you do get it for life in essence -- maintain a wiki page but make it special so it's noticeable and not let everybody have it by the dozen.

You could give the past winners a choice of having their title reflect a win but the pics ae superfluous.

It feels good to be disagreeing with Flay again. The universe is now in balance.

1) Hey, thanks guys!
2) I think I agree with Phoebus on past titlepics.
3) Many thanks to Phoebus for so deliberately deliberating on these awards. :) Despite all the nagging, we do apprecitiate the work.

I'd just life to reiterate what Phoebus said about the lack of nominations. I felt like there were many other worthy performances out there that went unnoticed. So, don't be shy in the nomination thread for 2005!

(I'd like to see the mod-related awards revived as well).

And thanks so much for the Scummy :) My parents are going to be so proud!

I think that we should make the new scummies look different so that they can be distinguished by year and you keep them for life. If someone has more than one, they can either have them resized to fit or pick one.

Judges weren't allowed to vote on categories they were nominated for.

I updated the entry for the 2004 scummies on the wiki. Someone still needs to do the 2003 entry.

It looks like I need one more graphic: Best New Role. It's a new award unless it's same as "Best Role"...

Leonidas, you must pick if you want the Funniest Role Claim or Best SK to be displayed.

-JEEP

PS someone else should go through the wiki and add the links to the 2004 scummies for the winners pages. ;)

jeep, would it be possible to have the icons link to the wiki page for the year in which they were won? (I assume that you're removing all of the prior-year award icons, even if the category was nuked).

Well I can only assume that the reason I die night one is that I'm such a great threat to either mafia or town. But anyway thanks guys for giving me an award!

I would like to thank Talitha, for doing such a wonderful job as the Lurker/Daykill SK, and mum and dad and my older brother and JEEP and Mith for such a wonderful site and Cuban Smoker, for totally losing interest in paced mafia, and Stewie and Nanook and Phoebus and Peacebringer, just because their names popped into my head, as well as....

[an hour later]

... and finally, I'd like to thank Talitha, for her recipe for pumpkin soup.
...whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.
