Oh dear god. I am traumatized and emotionally scarred, as well as mentally exhausted. One of our party for Pandemic Legacy season 1 moved away. She's back in town this week to wrap some things up, so we decided to marathon a bit to try and get further along/finish.

WE PLAYED FOR 12 HOURS TODAY. We got to the big twist. We experienced so much. It was a roller coaster of a day.

12 HOURS.............................................

We didn't finish. At most we have 4 games left. We still have 2 months to go.

In post 3245, xRECKONERx wrote:It is the most obvious successor to GOT imo

there are other games that do the area control mechanics better

but this feels like they took at look at GOT (which is like 7 years old at this point holy shit) and said "huh, this game feels dated" and streamlined a lot and dropped the theme

my biggest issue with it is that upon reflection, the clans you play as all feel too similar. they all have the same pool of 26 tokens, but each clan gets one special token that only they can use, and then they all have a minor passive ability

the variance comes in drawing combat tokens each round. you don't know when you're going to draw your "big" moves, so each round feels fresh and different. which removes the analysis paralysis that came from GOT, where you want to plan 10 moves out
It's certainly not bad but if I had the time to play a bigger wargame I'd personally prefer that over Rokugan - if you only have 2-3 hours to play though then it's pretty good. Also go print out the FAQ from fantasy flight's site because the rule book being small was theoretically nice but there are a lot of edge cases that we wound up guessing at because we couldn't find an actual rule/example for it in the rulebook.
(coastal tokens being placed on the coastal borders you're attacking and you not needing an actual coastal province to attack from, replacing a peace token with a scorched earth token from a territory card wasn't actually supposed to happen, if the bluff token gets bounced by the first player card they're not supposed to use it again that round, etc.)

didn't we look that up and you actually could raid a peace token?

We looked it up for you and reck's thing on like the last or second to last turn and reck couldn't raid your peace and it looks like that was right going by the faq

but also I shouldn't have been able to burn brock's peace province with my territory card earlier

no reck did raid my peace and that's why I came in 2nd instead of 1st

I'm like 90% sure he moved it to a new location that wasn't the peace location after you looked it up

i tried to raid your peace and then i couldnt so i raided your 3 honor province instead to stop you from getting the territory bonus

So if anyone here knows decrypto I played an absurd game of it today (won't mention any specific words except for a couple non-useful hints that were given so as to avoid potential spoiling)

2 vs 2, mostly smooth sailing, they got a miscommunication ~round 3, we got one ~round 5, no interceptions on either side heading into... round 8. So if nothing changes this round, we're headed to tiebreakers. We go first, and my teammate is giving clues, and gives some clues, and I'm pretty shaky on them. I think I eventually guess 1 3 4, but am very unconfident on the 1. The other team guesses 1 2 4... and the code is 1 2 4. So we get a miscommunication AND they get an interception, and literally the only way we can win now is to have the same thing happen in reverse on their turn. And lo and behold it fucking does despite us having at least one ~50/50 guess. So after a mostly banal 7 rounds, the last round ends with literally every possible token being given out.

And this means that it's going to come down to guessing words, since we both have the exact same set of tokens. We're pretty confident in 2 of their words, and we're pretty confident 2 of ours are obvious. I haven't gotten to this point so wasn't sure what protocol to follow so we just guessed words one at a time with ~30 seconds to think between guesses. They guess our first obvious one and get it right, we guess their first extremely obvious one and get it right. They guess our second obvious word and actually get it wrong (significantly different word from the correct word though almost right) and we guess our second one we have confidence in (though not nearly as much as the first) and we get it right, so we're at 2-1 in guesses. We bs an obviously wrong guess for one of theirs (it was way way off) and they actually figure out a second one due to some inane rule-skirting silly bullshit that happened (all in good jest, it kind of gave us an unfair advantage but limited communication awkward etc and it let them figure out the word). So it all comes down to the last two guesses. We aren't confident at all but I have something that fits decently well... it winds up being wrong, but it was very close. They guess at our fourth word and aren't close at all (and they were gonna have a damn hard time guessing it, given hints of "toothbrush" and "tombstone" along with some others :p).

So the game ends in a spectacular fucking draw, maximum game length with the game ending anyway because we both miscommunicated for the second time simultaneously with intercepting for the first time and both of us getting two of the other team's words right, one close but wrong, and one completely horribly incorrect.

Oh also we finished october for pandemic legacy season 2 yesterday. Still yet to lose. Though we actually got to 6 incidents (could have been 7 with some bad luck) through some carelessness/trying to do like 4 things at once.

Now Boarding and Wok Star arrived last week. I've played Wok Star before, but I'm hoping I get to play one of them tonight. I think a few of my other firends will be pretty excited about Now Boarding (because shiny new Tim Fowers game omg). I really should read through the rules or watch the videos, but I'm too lazy, so we're all gonna learn it together toniiiiight.

Should be fun.

I did get to play now boarding last night. It was incredibly difficult. It was easy enough to learn and set up, but impossible to win. I think we'll have to play it a lot to really find the optimal strategies. We did much better on our second game, but still lost.

I don't know if this is exactly relevant, but I played Jackbox Party Pack recently and I was blown away at how smart it is.

Why the hell have more board games not used the system that Jackbox does? Individuals play from their phones with the main screen to display everything.

I feel this shit is the future of board games. Maybe I'm over reacting?

(Someone should definitely create a mafia client that uses that technology... but I digress.)

GLOOMHAVEN SHIPS ON THE 19TH SUPPOSEDLY HYPE

@molla I would say a board game probably isn't a board game if it's played solely via screen/phone
but Spaceteam is another one that is kinda the same experience

I've played Now Boarding several times now, and can confidently say that it's extremely difficult. It's fun though. It's very hectic, which I enjoy. The hectic nature is what I enjoy most about simultaneous real time game play.

I need to sit down sometime this week and figure out the rules for Wok Star.
