FTL: Faster than Light

FTL: Advanced Edition dropped the other day. I've seen plenty of Scummers playing it on Steam, and it is awesome enough to warrant it's own thread. :D

It seems that Advanced Edition might have upped the difficulty, but I don't know how much of that is down to changed mechanics or that it kinda overwhelms you with options for your ship and you need to make the right choices and get lucky in order to pull off a victory. Either way, Mind Control plus Teleporter is a super fun combo. :D

I've been doing hard mode and advanced edition b/c well, it's advanced edition and normal was way too easy for me beforehand. (Mostly due to teleporters).

FK ITS HARD.

Haven't gotten past stage 3 yet.

I love FTL. Haven't tried Advanced Edition yet.

That said, hurray for free new content. That's a rarity nowadays.

Right? It's a great game. It also has, in my opinion, the best music out of any indie game I've played.
I suck, though.

Normal mode is definitely harder with Advanced Edition content. They bumped up the costs of droid/teleporter systems, which were two of the big things that made beating the game fairly easy.

Haven't touched Hard Mode yet. Haven't seen the new race either but it seems awesome.

They also nerfed the rewards you get from taking over a ship with boarders, because people got way better at it than the devs intended. They also added an AoE explosion for Zoltans when they die. Thus, Teleporter + Clone Bay + Zoltans = SUICIDE ZOLTAN BOARDING PARTY GO!

THATS WHY MY DUDE RANDOMLY DIED FFS.

Also is it just me or does the hp/jump aspect of cloning bay seem mostly like it's just a minor convenience? Like I get that it could save someone if you have to blind jump after a fight when you're at a sun or something but besides that it doesn't serve a ton of functionality.

At Rank 3 it heals a quarter of health for everyone bar Zoltans and Rocks per jump. Not really a minor convenience.

The hp/jump aspect is there so you have a kinda medbay and don't HAVE to clone everyone right away the second time you get boarded.

Hard mode is really hard. Although I've been greedy and trying to do it with type B ships, and I didn't really get the type B ships beyond BUY TELEPORTER BOARD THEM GO.

Now I think that the type B's are all really extreme versions of the type A. The defining feature is jacked way up, but you're now incredibly reliant on it because you lack elsewhere. Even for the kestrel.

Things I've learned so far, after a handful of playthroughs...

Cloaking and a teleporter (or another way to quickly kill people and efficiently disable the flagship's weapons) are essential. That strategy hasn't really changed.

The hacking in part 1 is a bitch, though. Make sure you have level 2 oxygen bays or one well-placed hacking unit can suffocate your crew.

The ion charge laser is really amazing and efficient until you get to ships with four shields and decent engines (i.e., everything in the final sector).

Fully upgraded mind control is fantastic in conjunction with the teleporter. It can be used on flagship weapon systems but the game has glitches on me and randomly teleported the controlled person to the main part of the ship.

Out of the many times I have played it I have only come close to beating it once, and even then I was playing on easy I believe. You are not alone.

played it a bunch on normal but only unlocked one type C ship so far (kestrel) which IS pretty fun to be fair (plus the lanius ship which is also fine)

i wanna try out all the new layouts though and having to survive til the last sector with a type b ship i've either played a lot already or am awful at using (mantis or engi for example) is kind of irritating

the new music+models+events+everything else is amazing though so I should probably just play a bit on easy instead of getting myself blown up on normal runs over and over again

I would like to know this as well. I got battered by it even on easy.

haven't beaten it with advanced edition yet but how i beat it a few times was

-have cloaking for the stage 2 flagship because otherwise the drone surge will fuck you hard enough that you usually can't recover
-have either a fuckton of lasers to get past the shields+ ideally at least one combat drone for even more lasers OR some bombs to hit the shield room with and still a decent amount of lasers
-probably have at least 3 shields
-having a transporter to kill their weapons+ the dudes that repair them in stages 1 and 3 is also nice but not necessary

super mega bonus: use the zoltan A ship, kill everything forever and have so much extra scrap from not taking damage that you have all those things by like sector 5.

This is actually the trick for everything (at least in hard mode).

Definitely upgrade your shields first, so you don't take damage so you don't have to waste scrap on repairs. It's only 2/3 scrap per hitpoint, but it really adds up.

On what difficulty?

On normal/easy you teleport onto it, disable the weapons then use your upgraded weapons to kill it, while dodging with upgraded shields and engines.

If you don't have upgraded weapons you're screwed.

On hard? Lolmissilesconnectedtorestoftheship. Lolconstantmissilescomingatyou. Loldead. (Basically, IDK).

Flak weapons are fantastic against the flagship, so long as you have something (bursty lasers/missiles/bombs) to back them up, 'cause there's a significant lack of accuracy there. Great for taking out shields, though.

man i really hate how bad every subsystem is except cloaking on stage 2 of the flagship

got there with like 8 lasers i could fire at once+ a combat drone and hacking and mind control with the lanius ship (didnt get cloaking or a transporter so i could get the first lanius ship achievement earlier) and then the combat drone and hacking are both useless because of the defense drone and mind control can't actually kill a weapon system if it's only at level 2 so i take down the shields with a million lasers then LOLDRONES then i die

maaaaaan

mind control the guy on the helm and you massively reduce their evasion.

I THINK auto-piloting will still work, but even so.
