Rules

  • Ethics and Etiquette

    i) All the global rules and guidelines hold in this game, and are not duplicated below.
ii) Never link to or quote from any Private Topic provided by the mod. Loose paraphrasing should be fine.
iii) Excessive coarse language should not be directed at other players. Frustration is natural, but keep it in check.
iv) Don't impersonate the mod. They won't edit other people's posts except to fix tags; they won't leave other comments.
    v) Cryptography and steganography are forbidden, as are any forms of provable randomness (e.g. dice tags, random.org screenshots).
vi) If you have outside information which alters your knowledge of the game or suspect the game has been compromised, contact the mod immediately.
vii) Don't exploit technicalities or ambiguities in any of the rules to do something you should know is forbidden or unethical.

    Matters of Life and Death

viii) A vote or unvote is valid so long as it contains the word 'vote' or 'unvote' directly followed by a player's name or 'no lynch', all in instantly readable unquoted bold text.
ix) Abbreviations or misspellings of a player's name or 'no lynch' are valid whilst voting, so long as they are unambiguous.
    x) Votes and unvotes are invalid if they come from any account not listed as alive and presently in the game.
xi) A lynch occurs when a player receives greater than 50% of all votes.
xii) A no lynch occurs when greater than or equal to 50% of all votes are placed in favour.
xiii) Players may continue talking after a lynch or no lynch has occurred until the mod announces it.
xiv) Once the mod has announced their death, a player may not post further. This includes 'bah' posts.

    Actions, Activity, and Deadlines

xv) The lengths of Day and Night phases are up to the mod but will generally be between 5 and 14 days and 48 and 72 hours respectively.
xvi) If the Day deadline expires without a majority of votes on a player, nobody dies and the game moves into Night.
xvii) If Day or Night actions are not submitted via PM or in bold in a mod-provided PT before deadline, they do not resolve.
xviii) Players who do not wish to perform an available Night action should submit 'no action' or risk being replaced.
xix) Deadlines are extended only in exceptional circumstances or if a player needs replacement. No phase ends until all slots are occupied.
xx) Players who do not post for 48 hours will be prodded. Not responding to a prod within 24 hours or receiving 3 prods will see that player replaced.
xxi) If a player expects to be unable to post for upwards of 48 hours, they should declare V/LA legibly, in bold, in-thread, to avoid being prodded.

    Miscellaneous

xxii) When in doubt, ask the mod.
xxiii) Flavour will never have any significance, hidden or otherwise, to the game.
xxiv) Punishment for breaking the rules is determined on a case-by-case basis, and may range from a warning to a modkill or replacement.
xxv) The mod reserves the right to add, modify, or remove rules as necessary, but will not change relevant rules during or after the fact.

Clarification about alts

  • The purpose of this game was to provide an environment where players could be unencumbered by their meta. The last game was free of speculation about mains, thankfully; ideally I'd like this game to proceed similarly.

If you reveal the identity of your main on purpose I will replace you. If you lie and falsely reveal yourself to be someone else's main I will replace you. If you alt slip or otherwise accidentally reveal your identity, I
    might
    replace you.

I'm not going to stop you guessing in-thread as to other players' identities but I think it's against the spirit of the game. If you are on the receiving end of someone else's guesses I recommend that you just don't respond at all.

    These rules apply going forward.

Let's begin some discussion. I would greatly appreciate it if every player could answer the following questions in their next post.

1) How many years of mafia experience do you have on your main account? (Less than 1 year, 1-2 years, 2-3 years, 3+ years)
2) What are your thoughts about the balance of this game, given the reviewers (Faraday and chamber) and the mod (Quilford). Do you have mod meta?
3) Do you watch anime? What's your favorite?

4) What's your opinion on short 10 day deadlines? Good for town? Good for scum? Did you know that you were getting into this?

I'll give a few fake answers for the sake of discussion later. I just wanted to make my entrance on page 1 before I left.

Post edit: wow, you saw right through my façade. How insightful of you.

I don't want to narrow down alt possibilities. Maybe it'll help with scumhunting, sure, but I'm feeling stubborn and actually want to enjoy trying to work with the anonymity.

The only question that remotely narrowed down alt possibilities is the first question, and even that is worded vague enough to make alt guessing a challenge.

Giving fake answers is okay for the sake of discussion, but do note that there are consequences.

Those are some terrible RQS questions. Question 1 negates the point of the setup entirely as does the latter part of Question 2. Questions 2 and 3 might "create discussion" but hardly useful one, if anything it adds fluff and Question 4 similarly doesn't add much albeit it's not as bad as the other 3.

You should suggest better ones then, instead of proceeding to brainless and strictly inferior RVS.

No thanks. Benefits of RQS are minimal in this setup given the lack of ability to meta players and judge whether their answers have any real alignment indicators.

You should join me on You are dead to me, I heard they slept with your mother.

Answering any of those questions narrows down the field for possible mains severely, especially the second question due to how players might react to knowing or not knowing the names. I find it interesting, to say the least, that you think it's the first that's the most revealing. I don't think that was malicious, though.

I also find the questions as a whole pointless because everyone in this game has significant incentive to obscure their identity as cleverly as possible. So should people give you answers, there's a whole mess of WIFOM that isn't even alignment indicative anyway. I'd rather we all just saved time and ignored the questions instead of going through that whole song and dance.

Back to the second question: alternatively to having people try and possibly fail to cover up relations with the mentioned names, the last secret alt mafia game had experimental modifiers, but mostly normal roles. I actually don't think Quilford will have pushed the bar much with this setup this time either, because I think he respects the mechanic enough to not let much get in its way. (And that's all you'll get from me. Congratulations, you now know I'm somewhat familiar with the mod.)

But thank you for trying to call me out on this. It's a much more productive discussion than what you were originally going for.

Hello, ladies and gentlemen.

Today we will play a game of Mafia.

I hope you took your time reviewing your card. Remember that the red card means Mafia and black card means town.

Now everyone close your eyes. Splendid.

Now Mafia, please open your eyes and confirm your partners. Well done.

... Hmm? Oh, that's embarrassing.

Regrettably, I've been informed that I'm not actually the game moderator but just a player.

Well then. Let's just lynch the Mafia members for fun and start the game over.

Incidentally, you also both read more or less the same to me. I'm really hoping that this isn't just due to the alt mechanic.

There are no better ways to start the game. Your random questions are brainless and strictly inferior as any RQS and RVS as your questions does nothing to help progress the game.

But how about to garner reaction? Well, that's what the brainless and strictly inferior RVS does too.

By the way, I'm more surprised that you expected nothing but a "RQS is bad" given that's what happens if you decide to RQS in this site.
