But I don't know which game to buy.
I prefer an RPG game with either high replay value or vast post-game contents.

And no i don't want any pokemon games bc I'm buying pokemoon.

Help?

Have you considered Pokemon?

Fire Emblem Fire Emblem Fire Emblem Fire Emblem
Seriously though, Fire Emblem, Awakening in particularly is incredibly awesome. Bravely Default is really good as well in the RPG area.

Fire Emblem: Fates, obviously (it outclasses Awakening in most respects but FE is FE so etc.)
Kirby Triple Deluxe was worthwhile, and I'm told Planet Robobot is as well
obviously Smash 4 if you like it enough to take it portable

Surprisingly these are the only games I have that I'd recommend... and the only other game I have is Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, which sits right on the dividing line between "meh" and "abysmal" in the Mario RPG tier list.

IDK, I play much cheaper games now, and most of my 3DS time goes into Fates anyway...

So let the market give you more help!
I'm told Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Kid Icarus: Uprising are both good, Paper Mario: Sticker Star was one of the worst first-party Nintendo games ever released, Mario Kart 7 is good if you don't mind games with no semblance of balance, and if New Super Mario Bros. 2 is anything like its predecessor (IIRC it is) I'd put a hard NO on that as well.

Point of clarification on Fates:
Birthright is super-casual (I've seen it compared to Pokemon). Conquest is super-not. If you're only going to get one, choose well.

all the
Etrian Odyssey
games are good if you're looking for RPGs.
Etrian Odyssey 4
is extremely light on story (all the games in the series are, but that's the only non-remake for the 3DS released in the US so far), but the
Untold
games, which are remakes of the first two, have a lot more story depth.

there's also
Tales of the Abyss
and
Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance
if you like action RPGs, but neither of those has been released digitally, so good luck finding a copy. and I don't necessarily suggest the latter unless you've played the rest of the
Kingdom Hearts
series.

Is it the regular, or the "New" model?
If the latter, consider buying a $10 card and getting Earthbound from the eShop.

Thanks for the inputs.

In the end, I got a completely different game because, well, fire emblem fates were all sold in wal-mart.
I'm putting them in my next game of purchase list though.

I agree with XYZZY.

Get Fantasy Life.

Kid Icarus: Uprising is an amazing game as long as you can deal with the controls - I've had no issue myself, but I have heard many tales of those who find it difficult or uncomfortable to use. But it is a bloody incredible game.

Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is top-notch as well (although don't bother with Tri Force Heroes unless you have other people to play it with - it's boring and slow as single player, and you're hardly missing out on much).

Luigi's Mansion 2/Dark Moon is a very good (if considerably more linear) successor to the original, and I saw someone mention Kingdom Hearts DDD - never played any of the other KH games so I can't compare, but I did really quite enjoy it even if the final stretch of bosses were an absolute bastard (with like 7 difficult bosses in a row, if you die you only go to the start of that boss BUT there's no proper save points so if you turn off your system you have to start them all over again).

Fire Emblem Awakening is better than Fates. Fates gameplay might be better, but awakening's cast was even better.
h yeah A link between worlds and Kid Icarus are great
also the Zero Escape series and Phoenix Wright for something a bit different

Triforce heres online is solid, it can get frustrating when people are clueless but it's definitely worth picking up.

A link between worlds is excellent and very refreshing

Bravely Default is solid. Fantasy Life is also solid if you don't mind grinding that is not necessarily of the combat type, but it's a really good game to have for those times when you're stuck in the interminable line at the DMV.

If you don't mind playing DS games, Radiant Historia is excellent and very, very highly recommended.

Zero Escape is something I'd recommend with reservations. The first two games are excellent, but playing those means you'll be compelled (yes, compelled) to play the third, which is a great and pricey lesson in how much life can truly disappoint you.

I endorse the zero escape series in full including the third

Can anyone think of any recently (and I mean over this last year or two) released 3DS/Wii U games which I might enjoy?

Because I need to think of some with my birthday coming up soon, but I don't know what to ask for - Phoenix Wright: SoJ and Pokkén Tournament (as well as money for Pokémon Moon which comes out after) are the only things I can think of.

Got Awakening, haven't finished it yet though so no real interest in further FE games

Pokémon Conquest... eh, not really my thing in general tbh.

Could recommend Link Between Worlds. Again, not exactly recent but very good!
