I technically didn't come from EpicMafia but I might as well have.
Back in 2008, I signed up on mafiascum first.
Then I panic-replaced-out of my first game.
Then
I went to EpicMafia.
Where I began heavily playing.
Until said newbie game finished, in spring of 2009.
And at that point, I came
to mafiascum.
I basically held dual citizenship between mafiascum and EpicMafia.
...But then again. This being in 2008/2009.
That wasn't a bad thing
. You know how many awesome players from EpicMafia we got? Quite a lot. My memory has quite failed me on the full list. Most famously, Red Coyote was an immigrant. There's plenty from that era, those EpicMafia players with 2009-2010 joindates who are on mafiascum remembered fondly by those who have memories of them.
Because back then EpicMafia wasn't shit.
I technically still have an account there last I checked.
I just...do nothing with it.

I play Epicmafia and Town of Salem, but only for the game itself, not the playerbases. Most ToS players don't really know how to play the game, and a lot of Epicmafia players (mainly in sandbox) don't even care or try. People on ToS will let crucial days wind by without lynching or doing anything because they're busy waiting for hard evidence to pop up instead of trying to make things happen. I think I lost my first game there posthumously because it was 3-way LyLo and a townie decided to save his counterclaim at trial and lynch the other townie instead.
As for Epicmafia.... main lobby is far from perfect, but Tes is right that sandbox is the real shitshow. I don't even understand why people there join games in the first place, because they give absolutely zero shits about anything. They will literally ridicule you for trying to scumhunt and use common sense over following the mindless crowd. The rest of their energy is spent on picking ridiculous fights with each other and acting like five year olds who think they know everything. So yeah, pretty obvious why MS is the best mafia site.
Survivor lobby though.... that has good players

sandbox and survivor lobby don't have actual mafia games.
ToS is just a shit show of people arbitrarily voting in a small amount of time.
ruby mafia (EM) is actually the best form of mafia party game because
1. you have enough time to formulate decent reads - unlike ToS
2. you don't have a fkload of time to plan ahead/fake/think of what to type - unlike forum mafia
3. theres no madness of people talking over each other in a shouting battle - unlike cam/IRL mafia
but the site itself has become bad due to the increase in players who dont apply/listen to logic and it's also had an influx of obnoxious players who have encouraged obnoxious playstyles that revolve around self voting and hammering.

oh yh i forgot to mention, EM back in 08-10 ppl often exploited games by mech testing.
EM in 2011/12 was the best era and actually better than any other mafia site including MS.

What's mech testing?

by implosion
Mech testing is a suite of checks you could test people with to see if they were fake claiming. Two examples I remember:
Asking a cop or tracker to repeat the exact phrasing of their report, since it's system generated.
Perhaps more pernicious, ask any power role with an action to go back to the previous night and say what their selection dialogue drop down says. On em, for some horrid reason, the mafia kill was decided by majority vote. For some other even more horrid reason majority vote was coded slightly differently from single-person selections like a doctor. Because of this, when you went back and looked at what it said in the previous night, for town power roles it would say "you choose implosion" but for mafia it would say "you select implosion" (iirc. Might have been slightly different.)
As a result you could catch people out based on them saying select instead of choose.

Most of those only worked on newbies so once you were at a competitive level players typically didn't even bother wasting time trying to catch people out on them.

sandbox isn't so much about the game it's about being goofy and killing people you don't like and lover-ing people you have an e-crush on.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's still relatively afloat for it's social aspects, but competition died a long time ago IMO
I've been on that site six years now and literally played like two comp games
sandbox is my shit tho

Yeah, enjoyed myself when games were slow here and I just had an hour left. Was a decent way to get some ready experience with the game, find a style. I played in short bursts really, but never stuck around.

In the past, EM players were labeled quite harshy and treated as either trolls or unintelligible due to the format they played in. If you are an EM player or someone who has tried Epicmafia, feel free to state your biases/opinions/drama here
epicmafia sucks (i'm currently a mod on EM, but dont play anymore lol). i wish i came to this site first instead of EM. maybe i'd be less toxic here when I started, since toxic is all EM is about lol. I like this community and playstyle 100x more
