I think a hot dog is a sandwich

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sun Oct 27, 2019 5:05 pm

For me a sandwich is when the contents of the sandwich are surrounded on two sides by the same material and are exposed to the outside world and also the two sides must be at least kind of parallel (like at a 30 degree angle max I think)

So some stuff that isnt a sandwich imo:
* calzone
* pizza
* burrito
* poptart

but a taco is a sandwich

also it doesnt have to be food so if you get your head squeezed between thighs then congratulations you are part of a sandwich

The real question is: If a hot dog is a sandwich, is Cheery Dog also a sandwich?

I'm interested in your hotdog modelling here. the dog can take various states of "push", for example a really shallow cut on the bun and the angle that a dog would naturally take if it was only depressed into the initial cut. Surely that would be 90 degrees bun spread at a minimum, in which case, you're saying that sometimes a hotdog with a bun is a sandwich and sometimes not.

i'm usually a prescriptivist but i can make an exception for this one:

something is a sandwich if and only if calling it a sandwich would not confuse anyone. if it is not traditionally called a sandwich, it's not a sandwich.

matt stoney's nightly routine notwithstanding, i'd say that a sandwich is most things pressed between parallel bread slices.

hmm i think ive expanded my sandwich definition to encompass sandwich-like items. so to me, a calzone , strom or wrap exists in a similar food-space as a sandwich.

either way its lunch time and i am hungry

I think that if the inside food is completely engulfed by another material it stops being a sandwich. The contents being exposed to the open air and looking at them before you take a bite is an important part of the entire sandwich experience

Although if you slice up a calzone or stromboli I could see an argument that the individual pieces can be considered sandwiches.

I'd definitely categorie fully engulfed stuff as a pie it seems convenient to keep the likes of apple pie and pumpkin pie together
