Game Rules
Bad weather's coming in, and the tide is rising. Search and Rescue doesn't have enough boats for everyone, so whoever's caught in the highest tide will have to fend for themself.

Life preservers can keep you afloat, and we've got some to spare. We'll do our best to give them out to who needs them the most. Try to bring them back, though - they're expensive.

And try not to drown. It makes us look cheap.

Spoiler: Game Components / Setup
The game has two decks of cards: the Weather Deck and the Tide Deck.

--

The Weather Deck has 60 cards, numbered 1-60 (one copy of each). Additionally, some Weather cards will have either half a Life Preserver or a whole Life Preserver.

1-12: no preserver
13-24: 1/2 preserver
25-36: whole preserver
37-48: 1/2 preserver
49-60: no preserver

Each player will draw twelve cards from the Weather Deck at the start of the game. They will also receive Life Preservers equal to the number of Life Preservers on the cards they drew: one Life Preserver for each whole Preserver and one Life Preserver for every *two* half Preservers. Any remaining Weather cards (in a 3 or 4 player game) will be exiled to the inky void, never to be seen in this game again.
Weather cards in hand are private; Life Preservers are public.

--

The Tide deck has 24 cards, numbered 1-12 (two copies of each).

Spoiler: Game Flow
The game is divided into rounds - the number varies based on the number of players. (# of players = # of rounds.)

Each round is divided into twelve turns.

--

At the start of each turn, I will draw two cards from the Tide Deck and publicly reveal them. Then, every player must choose one Weather Card from their hand and play it - simultaneously and secretly. (Players should PM their choice to me.)

Once all players choose a Weather card, I will reveal all cards played.

The player who played the
HIGHEST
Weather card must take the
LOWER
of the two Tide cards, playing it immediately.
The player who played the
SECOND-HIGHEST
Weather Card must take the
HIGHER
of the two Tide cards, playing it immediately.

Players may only have one Tide card in play. If a player obtains a second Tide card, they must first discard their previous Tide card.
This is the only way to discard a Tide card during the round.

After the players take their Tide cards (and discard if necessary), the player with the highest Tide card in play,
no matter when they played it
, must discard a Life Preserver. If two players are tied for highest Tide card, both must discard a Life Preserver.

If a player is required to discard a Life Preserver but doesn't have any, that player is eliminated for the rest of the round.

If all but two players are OUT at any time during the round, OR if all surviving players are out of Weather cards, the round ends immediately; no more turns are played. Otherwise, the next turn begins.

To start the next round:
- Players discard their Tide cards;
- The Tide deck is reshuffled;
- The Weather deck is
not
reshuffled. Instead, the starting Weather card hands from the previous round are reformed and passed one space down the player list; the corresponding Life Preservers are handed out with the hands. Thus, the hands will be the same for every round of the game, but played by each player once.

Spoiler: Scoring
Scoring happens at the end of each round.

Eliminated players
:
-1 VP
.
Surviving players
:
+X VP
, where X = their remaining Life Preservers.
Bonus
: the surviving player with the lowest Tide card scores an additional
+1 VP
. (Players that played no Tide card are considered to have played a 0. If tied, all tied players get the bonus.)

The player with the most points at the end of the game wins. If tied, the tied players share the win.

ACTIVITY / CONDUCT RULES
All site rules apply.

Spoiler: Conduct
My primary conduct rule: don't act like a jerk. Players who act like a jerk will be asked to stop. Players who refuse to stop will be force-replaced. Players who are site-banned or Mish-mash banned for 24 hours or more will be force-replaced, with AutoPlay covering their slot until the replacement is made.
  • Deliberately misstating a game rule or deliberately making factual misstatements about public information in the game is acting like a jerk. I will correct any misstatements of game rules or public information that I see.
(Public information: players' scores; players' Tide cards in play; players' Life Preservers; Tide cards up for grabs this turn.)
  • Making factual misstatements about private information in the game is OK,
even if that information was public earlier
, or if that information can be deduced by re-reading the game.
(Private information: Weather cards in hand; Weather cards removed from the game; Weather cards played during earlier turns / rounds; played Weather cards before they are revealed; previously discarded Tide cards; remaining cards in the Tide deck.)
  • Asking fellow players for advice in public is OK. They are not obliged to give any; they are not obliged to give *good* advice if they do give any, so long as they abide by the above rules.
  • Asking rules questions to me, in public or private, is OK.
  • I cannot give advice on which card to play.

Spoiler: Deadlines (24 hour deadlines!)
  • Players have
    24 hours
from the time I announce the Tide Cards and PM their updated Weather hand to submit their Weather Card via PM to me.
  • When starting a timer, I will start the timer from the top of the next hour.
(Exception: nudges and prods; these timers start from the time the original timer expired.)
  • Any player may request a 24 hour extension for any reason or no reason at all - limit one extension per player per turn.
  • If any player declares V/LA, I will extend the turn timer to 72 hours.
  • Note - no turn may ever last for more than 72 hours.
    (Exception: mod errors)

Spoiler: Missed Deadlines / AutoPlay
If a player misses a deadline, I will do the following:
  • First, I will nudge the player, giving them another 24 hours.
  • If the player does not respond to the nudge, I will then prod the player, giving them another 24 hours.
  • If the player does not respond to the prod, AutoPlay will take their turn, playing their
    lowest Weather card
    .
Any player that does not respond to a prod OR that misses three deadlines will need to verify with me that they still want to play within 24 hours of my notifying them.
If they do, they may stay in the game - but I will no longer nudge or prod them. Instead, AutoPlay will take their turn if they miss any more 24 hour deadlines, playing their lowest Weather card.
If they do not, or if they do not respond, I will look for a replacement.

Nudges expire after seven consecutive turns of no missed deadlines; expired nudges will no longer count towards the above rule.
Prods do not expire.
If a player is nudged and prodded in one turn, that counts as one missed deadline.
If a player on V/LA misses a 72-hour deadline, AutoPlay will automatically play their lowest Weather card, but I will otherwise treat it as a nudge for purposes of the above rule.

Spoiler: Takebacks / Error resolution
If a player wishes to change their Weather card, they may change their card up until I resolve the turn. Once I resolve the turn, all decisions are final. I will resolve the turn ASAP after receiving all players' submissions.

If a mistake, error, or illegal play occurs:
- If a player attempts to play a Weather card they don't have, I will inform them and refuse the play.
- If a player submits an illegal Weather card, and does not respond to PMs in time, I will play the Weather card that comes closest to the one they stated. If two cards are tied for closest, I will play the lower of the two.
- If I inadvertently reveal a Tide card incorrectly, I will reshuffle the remainder of the Tide deck.
- If I inadvertently reveal a Weather card incorrectly, I may restart the game if it occurs early during the first round. Otherwise, no action will be taken, as the Weather deck is never reshuffled.

Game on.

Round 1-1 begins.

The highest Weather Card will take the 3; the second-highest Weather card will take the 8. Highest Tide Card in play then loses a life preserver - that'll be whoever takes the 8 this round, but won't always be the person who plays the second-highest going forward.

This timer will be set for 48 hours to give everyone else a chance to check in; after this, we move to 24 hour timers. Good luck, everyone!

First, let's find out who didn't get a tide card this round.

NotAJumbleOfNumbers plays a 17.
Charles510 plays a 20.
Cheery Dog plays a 32.

These are the three lowest cards; all three of these players avoid the tides this round.

Nancy Drew 39 plays a 57, which is the highest card played this round. She takes the
low
Tide card, claiming and immediately playing the
3
.

That leaves pablito, who played a 43 - the second-highest card. He must take the
high
Tide card, claiming and immediately playing the
8
.

First up: who didn't get a Tide card?

Nancy Drew 39 played a 6.
NotAJumbleofNumbers played an 18.
Cheery Dog played a 19. All three are safe.

pablito played a 46, which is the highest card played this round. He already has a Tide card, so he first discards the 8; he then takes the
low
Tide card, claiming and immediately playing the 6.
Charles510 played a 22, which is the second-highest card played this round. He must take the
high
Tide card, claiming and immediately playing the 11.

Why do I only have 4 not 5?

In post 22, Nancy Drew 39 wrote:Why do I only have 4 not 5?
The amount of Life Preservers a player starts with depends on their starting hand. Your hand (and pablito's) had fewer Life Preserver icons than Charles510/NotAJumbleOfNumbers/Cheery Dog's did.

It sounds unfair to start, but it balances out in the long run in two ways:

1) If you have fewer Life Preservers, it's because you have a stronger hand - with better potential to avoid losing the preservers;
2) The Weather Deck is *not* reshuffled between rounds. This game, every round will start out with a 4/4/5/5/5 Life Preserver distribution - you'll start with 4 Life Preservers during two of the rounds and 5 Life Preservers during the other three. It'll be the same for everyone else; the only difference is the order in which people will see those hands. So the point potential is the same for everyone over the course of the entire game - just not over an individual round.

Kinda disappointed the distribution ended up being so even.
