Your Favourite Games

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Fri Apr 09, 2021 4:49 am

Really surprised this wasn't a thread already. What are Mafiascum's favourite video games?

My own (current) top 5 list:

#1:
Outer Wilds

Just so goddamn good. It's the game I've played that made me feel most like a detective, and that's just because of how well it integrates it all into a sense of discovery - no specific goal, just go explore and find things out. I was surprised by how well they managed to give hints to the player while also giving that huge level of freedom in where you go and what you do.

#2:
Nine Parchments

Probably one of the lesser known games here, this is a co-op twinstick shooter which is clearly inspired by Magicka. It's beautiful, and ridiculously fun to play. I actually got recommended it during an LSG so thanks Fenrir :D

#3:
Return of the Obra Dinn

It's probably clear I have an affinity for detective games, and of the more detective-y ones, Obra Dinn does it in by far the best way. It has that sense of discovery again, and that feeling when something clicks is amazing. Only downsides are the ending being a bit disappointing, and not being able to replay it (and also possibly the fact that sometimes you miss a clue and need to juggle people's names around for a bit before they work).

#4:
Divinity: Original Sin 2

Best RPG I've played by a country mile. It feels the most like DnD of any game I've ever played, in the sense that you have an absolute ton of freedom in how you go about doing things, right down to using strategies that feel like outright cheesing like
taking a deathfog barrel into the final fight and ending the first stage immediately by dropping it on Lucian's head
. I loved this game from the getgo, but the moment I realised I adored it was when
my friend decided to flood a city with deathfog, killing literally everybody, to avoid paying back a loan he'd taken out. He then found on returning to the city that the person he'd taken the loan out from was a demon, who thus survived the deathfog, and he still had to pay back the money.

Seriously. This game is so good.

#5:
Sid Meier's Civilization V

Given it's my most played game by a long way, gotta include this. The just... one... more... turn... gets me every single time. I don't think V is actually great balance-wise, especially in multiplayer, but I'm quite good at it so it automatically jumps up a few places based on that. There's nothing quite as satisfying as sniping the Great Library and hearing five people go 'wtf I was one turn away'.
Sometimes when I'm thinking of a track to submit, I think to myself "okay I could submit X, but I know a lot of people won't care for it, there's no point in wasting their time and mine". Glad to see [CaptainMeme] isn't burdened by such thoughts.

These aren't necessarily games that I currently like/play, but they are games that at one point were my favorite games. Presented in chronological order of when I played them:

1. Pokemon (Red/Yellow)
2. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
3. Call of Duty: World at War/Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
4. The Elder Scrolls VI: Skyrim
5. Rocket League

I should play KOTOR again tbh.

#1 Assassin's Creed: Odyssey

Love the story, the journey and the open world exploration. Felt like a tourist just exploring Greece. Really a wonderful game on so many levels.

#2 Civilization Series:

I've spent way too much time playing these games, played II, III, IV, V, VI and Alpha Centauri, just an immensely fun game that sucks me in :3.

#3 Starcraft/Warcraft/Age of Empires/Red Alert

I kind of lump all these RTS games into one category - favorite is probably the original Starcraft and War3.

#4 PubG:

I can't really aim very well and my reaction speed is very bad. I mostly play battle royales by pretending like im a bush and hiding somewhere and watching people kill each other.
My average kdr is like .1 and I've never won a solo game of Pubg despite logging over 2000 hours on the game.

#5 Autobattlers:

My current go to video game. I love how the drafting feels like MTG drafting except your team gets to fight multiple times and the drafting never ends. Unfortunately my friends take advantage of me by making me play fortune every time and I always lose :<.

Civilization is one of the greatest games of all time in dimensions that other fantastic games don't even participate in. I think I have learned more things and about things playing Civ than any other game. And it's also maybe the most addictive game I've ever played it's so hard to put down once you turn it on.

i mostly only play duelists and slayers. as isis knows from my tenure with hearthstone (and puzzle & dragons), i tend to play in a fairly limited manner (because i really only want to play the units that i want to play, and it feels unfair to those units to play other units) but then i optimize within that. like why would i want to play the villainous swain when i could play the heroic samira? et cetera et cetera

perhaps to you he is not a villain. i think these things tend to be a matter of perspective, and other people often do not agree with mine.

Are other autobattlers better than hearthstone BGs? Personally I prefer regular card games to BGs but if there are better autobattlers I might try them out

Breath of the wild was really good

Murder mentioning an old star wars game reminded me of the original battlefront 2 which was sick

How much of that learning curve is developing an intuition for how to approach different situations and how much of it is developing an ability to make lots of decisions in a small amount of time?

the making decisions in a limited amount of time remains very difficult for me, as i tend to need more time than i have in almost all situations. but i think most of the learning curve is from needing to understand why you are winning or losing every fight and how to tell if you are strong compared to the lobby and what is best course of action because of that. like learning the meta also important too and being able to react to different situations but i think most of the learning curve is due to there being a lot a lot of information to process and it being non-intuitive to learn it in ways other than playing or watching others play. whereas in battlegrounds after a few games you've mostly got it.

you don't really need to make decisions quickly until you get up to the very high levels,

at the early level you can have fun and learn different compositions and combos without really worrying about winning.

you can also do well with fairly simple strategies for most of the early stages of the ladder.

luck having a big component is also nice :)

@shiki Hmm, I experienced BGs as having a more of a learning curve than you're describing it as, esp cause there's so many heroes to learn. I enjoy that type of learning though

I'll probably try out TFT at some point but may end up getting too frustrated by the time constraints

for the heroes, with a few notable exceptions, i think you can understand how to play them without having extensive previous experience playing them. i also enjoy that type of learning, and there is a lot of it in tft.

I played for a couple months I think

1. Final Fantasy IX - my first Final Fantasy game and the one I've replayed the most.

2. Persona 5 Royal - took an already excellent game and improved it massively.

3. Persona 3 FES - lots of fun

4. Football Manager (series) - Spreadsheets which helped me bond with uni mates and keeps me interested year on year - plus I was an active part of the forum scene when I was at uni so that was also nice.

5. Slay the Spire - a deckbuilder that I'm never going to get bored of.
