Summer Games Done Quick 2021 (SPOILER ZONE)

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Mon Jul 05, 2021 12:39 am

Post by Flea The Magician »

Brief intro for those who don't know about it.
The Speedrunning Communities come together a couple times a year to showcase their best runs, show games off, set world records, show off glitches and generally make you regret ever picking up a controller in the name of charity. For example, the estimate on Resident Evil 7 is 1 hour, 37 minutes. If a game has a condition that can be run, it will be run. (Mario Odessey has a Nipples% category - get mario naked. Factorio, Minecraft, all have runs.)
GDQ is one of the bigger events doing this, on a worldwide scale and their summer events are dedicated to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders).

Their schedule is at https://gamesdonequick.com/schedule

I'm well annoyed I missed Psychonauts, for he is the milkman, and his milk is delicious.

TASBlock is always a favourite of mine. Looks like the Castlevania block is making a return this year too :D

What's people looking forward to? Anything good peeps might have missed? C'mon I know I'm not the only speedrunner here, even if I am bad at it :D

Was getting worried TheMexicanRunner was about to get Mercy killed on his GnG:R run o.o 6 mins over estimate.
It really wasn't in his favour though, got rekt early on

The Gone Golfing run was incredible
Sometimes when I'm thinking of a track to submit, I think to myself "okay I could submit X, but I know a lot of people won't care for it, there's no point in wasting their time and mine". Glad to see [CaptainMeme] isn't burdened by such thoughts.

I missed that one, blast Corps blew my mind earlier today. I hated that game as a kid so seeing all the tech they used.
Looking forward to the Castlevania block, and I can't believe just how much tech there is in Bloodstained

This was great. I enjoyed watching Majora's Mask, Breath of the Wild, both Pokemon runs (Emerald and Black/White), Lego Star Wars, Untitled Goose Game, Super Mario Bros 2, and Mario Kart 64.

The ones that make heavy use of glitches are especially interesting to me; as a programmer, I love hearing the explanations and can generally follow them. Probably my favorites were Lego Star Wars, MK64, and MM, for this reason. (Paper Mario also deserves a shout-out for being a 26-minute run where 10 minutes were spent playing a different game in order to set up a glitch.)

The golf game in question is Gone Golfing-- I can confirm both that the game is horrifying, and that the run was hilarious.
It's always the same. When you fire that first shot, no matter how right you feel, you have no idea who's going to die. You don't know whose children are going to scream and burn. How many hearts will be broken. How many lives shattered. How much blood will spill, until everybody does what they're always going to have to do from the very beginning... SIT DOWN AND TALK!

Gone golfing. I knew it was going to be weird from the prize they had, but ye gods I was not prepared.

Pokémon runs are always my favourite, I am a big pokénerd (who has a bit of a blind spot where BWB2W2 are concerned, cant get into them) and I would love to be able to run Gen1 or Gen2 some day :(

UGG definitely made a few honks, not helped by the interactive audience responding to honks in chat by turning into geese :P

I’ve seen a few videos about Paper Mario glitches, it is a “well designed game”

I love 100% runs on games like SM64, SMW, or the OG DKCs when I watch speedruns, but there's plenty of other cool runs out there too! I tried my hand at speedrunning for a brief while but I was not very good at it at all (I was trying to learn SMB2 and SMB3).
