It had started out as just a simple virtual reality experiment. Nobody expected it to go terribly wrong.
Testing had begun on a system to allow for holographic projections of movie characters and landscapes in 3D. This was going to be the new way of watching movies, but they had to test it with older movies first. 13 favorite characters were selected for initial testing. The room selected for the virtual reality tests was tightly secured, in case of accidents. They needed multiple characters because most movies don’t only have one. They turned on the machine to begin the test……

Despite that, they were all able to get their bearings. They noticed the others in the room with them, many of them familiar, yet many of them different from how they were remembered. Soon, however, they noticed something was wrong. One of their number was lying motionless on the ground some distance away. They ran to him, expecting the worst. That was what they found. A pulse was checked, and it could not be found. He was dead, and his image shifted into something more recognizable.
The researchers watching in the lab attempted to simply remove the projection of the body, as it was of no more use to them. To their horror, however, the body remained after they turned off his projection. Somehow, he had actually entered the real world. They debated what needed to be done. Were the others the same? Were the others just holographs instead of actually there?
The 12 still standing were horrified at what they saw. Nobody else was around on this desolate planet, so they knew that at least one of those who was still alive must be involved. A body doesn’t drop dead on its own. This is sci-fi and fantasy, not romance or drama. They decided that a democratic process must be involved, because deep down, aren’t we all reasonable individuals?
Even though they decided on a method, they needed a way to be rid of them. Since ropes aren’t easily found in a barren, seemingly virtual reality wasteland, they decided that since this is, after all, science fiction, they could do something that couldn’t be done in a normal world. They would use the disintegration ray that materialized in the air in front of them. “What a wonderful idea!” everyone thought. They then decided to get down to deciding which of them were responsible for the death of Yogurt. (I like it with strawberries or blueberries, personally.)
