DEAD LAST | GAME OVER

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Thu Aug 18, 2022 6:59 am

DEAD LAST

what’s dead last?Dead Last is a social collusion game of shifting alliances, betrayals, and murder for profit in which players must conspire and vote upon whom to kill each round. Any means of overt or covert communication is allowed – but make sure you don't tip off the target or they could ambush you instead! In the end of the round, one or two players will remain, either claiming all the gold or squaring off in a final showdown before starting the next round of play. The first player to score enough points of gold wins.

RulesThis is a game about eliminating each other, knowing where the votes are going, and getting points each time you’re the last one standing.
Read these rules carefully because they’re not the same as the board game version.

This game is played in rounds. Rounds start with every player alive, and continue until 0, 1, or 2 players are alive. At the end of the round, Gold Cards (worth 3-5 points each) are passed out to the winners of that round. Then everyone is revived, and a new round begins with all players alive again.

At the start of each Round, every player will choose to
Vote
for another player or
Ambush
and PM their choice. These are then resolved.

Resolution:
1. Anyone who has received the most votes (if there’s a tie, this includes all persons who received the highest number of votes) is a
Target
.
2. All
Targets
die, unless they
Ambushed
, in which case they live.
3. Anyone who
Voted
for a
Target
lives, unless that
Target
Ambushed
, in which case they die.
4. Anyone who voted for someone who is not a
Target
dies.
5. Anyone who
Ambushed
but was not a
Target
dies.

Exception to the above: In the uncommon scenario in which the highest number of votes anyone has received is 1 vote,
all Ambushes fail
. In this case, all Targets die. Those who
Ambushed
even though they were not a
Target
also still die.

This entire process (voting/ambushing, players being eliminated) is repeated until one of the following things happens:

1. There is one player left. This player receives 4 Gold Cards, each of which are worth 3-5 Gold Points.
2. All living players die at the same time. Every player who died
earlier
in that round receives 1 Gold Card.
3. There are two players left. They have a Standoff to determine the fate of the 4 Gold Cards.

In a 2-person Standoff, each player chooses
Share, Steal, or Grab One & Go
.
1. If both choose
Share
, they each receive 2 Gold Cards.
2. If both choose
Steal
, they both die, and
everyone else
receives 1 Gold Card.
3. If one
Steals
and the other
Shares
, the one who Steals takes all 4 Gold Cards.
4. If one plays
Grab One & Go
, they take 1 Gold Card, and the other gets the remaining 3.
5. If both play
Grab One & Go
, they each take 1 Gold Card, and the remaining 2 cards are shuffled back into the deck.

A note about Gold Cards: The deck of cards has 26 cards worth 3 points each, 43 cards worth 4 points each, and 11 cards worth 5 points each. You will never know how many points another player has, only how many Gold Cards they have.

When Gold Cards have been passed out, everyone is revived, and a new Round begins.

Ending the Game: At the end of a Round, anyone who has scored 25 points (in an 6-9 player game) or 24 points (in a 10-11 player game) wins. If this is true of multiple players simultaneously, the player with the higher total number of points wins. If there is a tie, a new round begins with only the tied players alive. If necessary, multiple tie-breaker rounds play out until a winner is crowned.

Deadlines: I’ll update the game around 5pm EST on M/W/F. Your actions need to be submitted before 4pm EST on those days. If your action is missing, you’ll automatically die for that round.

Ambush doesn't normally kill all people who target the ambusher, instead the ambusher chooses one person from among those who voted them to kill.

Also a misplayed ambush kills the ambushed on the spot and an ambush does not count as a vote.

Yes, this is what my ruleset says. Is there a part of it that makes you think I meant something else? :)

Yeah your rules read like Ambush counts as a self vote for purposes of target.

But I'm sorry I missed your one lime of text in a section of the rules that looks more like fluff than rules that outlined your changes as intentional instead of an error I was hoping to help you fix because I happen to enjoy this game.

But I'm glad you are all smiles and we have no issues here. :)

Oh shoot. Which part? I'd like to fix it in case people reference post #0 while playing.

And sorry if my response felt like a jab or something - my smile emojis were genuine! I've added/changed multiple house rules so I'm grateful for the opportunity to highlight the differences.

The main differences are the fact that ambushes hit everyone voting for the ambusher (not just one player) and the fact that ambushes *don't work* if nobody has received more than 1 vote. These changes are meant to avoid a couple semi-broken strategies that I just KNOW scummers would find and utilize.

Oh and I think? it's a house rule that if all living players die at once, everyone who died earlier in the round gets Gold (in the board game I think that only applies if it happens in a Final 2 scenario)

Exception to the above: In the uncommon scenario in which the highest number of votes anyone has received is 1 vote, all Ambushes fail. In this case, anyone who received a vote dies, those who ambushed die, and everyone else lives.

This line reads as if those who ambush themselves and those who receive a vote would both be tied on 1 vote, as opposed to requiring a vote to put them at 1 and make them a target begins with, not just because it equates vote getters and ambushers as having 1, but also that after saying "all ambushes fail" you include "anyone who received a vote" right before mentioning ambushers, which makes it sound like they're exclusive (in this case, they aren't).

In general the only example you gave created that confusion and I wanted to just add the clarification that any non-target ambusher always dies and ambushes never count as a vote for self as a way of being extra hyper clear.

I see, yeah that line is unclear. The goal of the rule is (in that scenario of maximum 1 vote each) all Targets should die, regardless of whether they ambushed, AND all ambushers should die, regardless of if they got a vote. Only those who Voted without receiving a Vote are intended to survive (this is an especially handy rule at final 3s, where everyone is incentivized to ambush without this house rule). I'll think about a different way to write it.

I rewrote that house rule, hopefully it's more clear. The overall effect of most of the house rules is to speed up the game and remove a couple boring potential scenarios. If anyone has more questions about the rules, please let me know!

read over the house rules. they all seem great except for the ambushes hitting everyone. like, i know its to avoid an extra timing step which is crucial in non-live play but it feels like itd throw off some balance somewhere

It definitely will feel different than the original board game, but it’s a perfectly balanced way to play! Just a bit more chaotic-feeling.

All of the house rules were popularized in the BoardGameGeek forums, so theyve had play testing with multiple groups.

Also, what is NM doing? Worst play I’ve ever seen.
I can't remember the last N_M post that wasn't bland, unimaginative and lame. Some shitposters are at least somewhat funny. You are the epitomy of the type of poster that nobody would miss if you were to suddenly disappear. You never add anything of value.
I'm guessing you haven't read the game and probably never will? Why even sign up to play?

sign-ups have closed. The game begins!

Round 1
Vote 1

You have until (expired on 2022-08-26 16:00:00) from now to PM me either VOTE: playername or
Ambush
. You can change your mind as many times as you like until deadline, but I will not accept late submissions even if I have not revealed the results of the round yet.

From now until then, you can communicate with each other however you like! I will not be facilitating that communication (I get to sit back and relax while y'all go insane) but you can use PMs, site chat, discord, email, skype, road trips to visit each other, posting in this thread... whatever you want to do to help make your decisions.

A couple things to keep in mind:
1. This is a game! Find the fun, be good sports.
2. Your opponents are people! Be kind, don't make it personal.
