i hammered and tried to seem super chill with the plan in the event that childs decides to go rogue and shoot elsewhere and i'll assimilate... probably into someone else who is in the PoE tbh, i think that'd be a bit wild and throw them off

This is not the correct play. This is taking what would be a golden gift from Childs and sprinting yourself right back into autoloss. Childs will live and say they didn't shoot Bennings, and people quickly figure out that Bennings assimilated because scum have no reason to shoot the slot that is both extremely scummy and getting vigged. Bennings is virtually done because people will go to hell and back to figure out the identities.

Assuming Childs shoots outside, say Copper, Bennings needs to shoot and assimilate into Childs.

This then gives a flip of Bennings and Copper. Childs, now a Thing, says they shot Bennings and Copper is the scumshot. While town might worry that Copper assimilated into Childs, the bar is much lower than a confirmed assimilation. As long as you make it past that lower bar of skepticism, you're not in the mechanical PoE at all Day 3 as Childs. In future days, you essentially have left your previously scummy play entirely in the past and have a clean slate to work with if you assimilate again, as Childs dying will raise no eyebrows and be fully expected.

There's also an interesting idea of assimilating into Childs then taking the opposite tactic by saying you

didn't

shoot Bennings, essentially again confirming an assimilation, but this runs into a similar issue of town rigorously testing identities.

The advantage here is that people might think "Why would scum not claim the shot?", but it still won't work: They're going to inevitably test you when everyone else looks good.
