Aristeia
I typically don't do nominations but if there's an absence of it from others I can give it a try. Aristeia has been one of the best active town players on the site for a while. She might not be perfect, but she consistently has a strong presence in games that is very difficult for scum to play around even if her reads aren't on point right away, and has had many extremely strong performances where she has pushed mafia strongly in a way that makes it extremely difficult for town not to win the game. For example, in Open 881 - a Friends and Enemies game, she pushed all of Shadi, Superbowl and Bell on Day 1. While we ended up miseliminating on Day 1, she was not part of that and helped to ensure Superbowl and Shadi were eliminated on the following days, and as soon as she realised Bell was not a Mason she started pushing him which led to town winning on day 4. Another example is Guns and Roses VI where she pushed Dunnstral and Bulge, two scum, on day 1, and was pretty skeptical of Mala throughout. In Hollow Knight Mafia - which surprisingly was actually this year - she rolled tracker, a rather weak power in a large game with lots of power roles. But she used it with fantastic skill, catching multiple mafia members - not just identifying possible mafia but also the ones who would make the kill, taking out Sircakez and thestatusquo, dangerous mafia players in their own right. She also pushed a scum lim on actiondan d1. Mafia eventually won that game, thanks to what was an incredible scum performance from Gimli, but I don't think that should take away from how well Ari played.

Overall, when I think of the best town players on the site Aristeia is the name that comes to my mind the most. She's very skilled and is capable of being primarily responsible for multiple scumflips in many of her towngames. I can't think of anyone who deserves this award more than she does.

Klick
I mean this is basically the teacher vouching for the student. consistently very strong town player. Has a very solid understanding of the game (which is more than most players).
Here is 1 notable example other people can write more and add more than I'm willing to.
game - wins game page 1 by forcing a tvt. this tvt eventually leads into very quick game win.

DragonEater70 - "I find Klick to be deserving of the Paragon award, and also extremely fun to play with as town. What's cool about Klick's play and makes him a great town player is not necessarily super high read accuracy (though his reads accuracy is pretty good), but rather, two other, much more important factors:
1. His flexibility of reads - Klick isn't married to his reads, and isn't even slightly attached to them (which is a unique quality in Mafia players). He is able to push someone without locking them scum, and then start townreading them when they respond well. He basically doesn't care about being wrong as long as he can end up being right in the end, which makes him pretty good at finding town.
2. He plays a great support/kingmaker game, meaning Klick will not act as the townleader who decides on wagons, BUT he will consistently and accurately pick town players to make into town leaders and, in his slightly changed words, support their narrative. And the effect of this is creating extremely stable, bulletproof town blocks where town players are empowered to make pro town plays.
Overall, his town play is really solid.

Did I romanticize Klick's townplay? Maybe a little, but that's kinda expected in a Paragon of Mafia Hunters nom. A good example of both these points is his play in Don't Fall In The Volcano!"

Dannflor
There are quite a few players on MafiaScum that play the town alignment well, but what really stands out to me about Dannflor is the total
ease
with which he catches scum.
It has become almost routine for him to replace into a game, ask a question or two, and then
casually
place a vote on scum and lead a successful elimination on the scum slot. Examples: 1, 2 (Sorry for exposing your not-so-secret alt btw). I mean it's crazy that I can just easily find two different games where Dannflor has a single vote in his ISO and it's a vote on scum that was eliminated in that day phase.
More damning evidence about Dannflor being too good at hunting scum includes Large Normal 245 where Gunsmith!Dann was deciding between two scum to investigate on Night 1 (Smiley and Random Nurse), and then again deciding between the two remaining groupscum on Night 2... Do I need to say more??? Like seriously, I have no clue how he does it but it's absolutely insane.
Addition: In Swinger's Hall, Dann basically stopped a miselim on Klick and had a 4 person PoE that included all 3 scum.
2023/11/22
jjh927 is consistently obvious town, has accurate reads, and excels at getting town to actually put down their differences and work together. In Datisi's University, jjh was not only killed by the mafia on N1 due to being obvious town, but had In Mini Normal 2314, jjh927 was *again* killed N1 due to being obvious town. He also hard pushed 2/3 scum in both marcistar and Xegarus D1, only backing off due to self-resolving claims and the fact that he correctly read Xegarus as a traitor. Secrets of the Anuket Topaz was a town loss, but jjh927 had a member of the scum team within his sights for pretty much the entirety of the game.

Aristeia Hollow Knight Mafia
yes, i know this game ended in a loss for town, but i think ari's contribution to this game has made it a grueling marathon for the last scum, as opposed to an utter scum sweep.

ari helped vote out scum on day 1.

ari was a lazy tracker this game. when i was making the setup, i thought of the role as fairly weak. after all, it's a large game, hitting the exact scum that's performing the kill is difficult. and besides, scum has a non-consecutive activated ascetic. no way the tracker ever gets anything useful here, right? right...

on night 1, the ascetic scum was performing the kill. except they didn't use the ascetic. they were neighbours with the flipped scum, surely people would townread them for that, right? well, people did townread them. except for ari, who tracked them to the failed nightkill on night 1.

and then she casually tracked another scum to the nightkill on night 2. scum that was in a relatively good position, that she had a pet scumread on since day 1.
2023/04/23
Radical Rat HMS Mutiny
We're continuing on the trend of nominating townies for losing performances. Radical Rat played well in what was overall a very tough game for Town. The Town generally struggled to untangle all the claims made by the scumteam: Elements escaped early elimination by claiming a fancy Vanilla Cop and was often believed. Malakittens accidentally poisoned her own teammate, a member of the scumteam; she claimed the kill, making her even more townread than she already was.

Many townies tried to make heads or tails of the PR claims, mostly unsuccessfully. After Mala claimed the kill on scum, I thought that would essentially be the nail in the coffin for town, that
at best
they were eventually going to catch Elements. That is, until RR perfectly identified Malakittens as a Traitor with a sequence of posts (1, 2, 3) in a literal moment of brilliance.

In mafia, it's one thing to have a good idea, it's another altogether to stick to it; RR did almost perfectly for the rest of the game. At most times the scumteam looked favoured to win the game; RR's solve made scum's job harder, and made me question if maybe, just maybe, Town didn't still have a chance... in 4v3 ELO.
2023/09/01
This play vastly swung the EV of this game in town's favor.

At the end of Day 2, town was correctly wagoning a scum player who then claimed mason - threatening to out one of the three masons that had so far remained undetected in order to secure a scum elimination. With little hesitation, Dunnstral correctly deduces that the player claiming mason (superbowl9) *cannot* be a mason and cc's the mason claim. What makes this play so brilliant is that Dunnstral himself was a vanilla townie. The day ends shortly after and Dunnstral is killed during the night. The 3 masons remain hidden and the game ends in a town victory 2 days later.

This was not only a sharp part of deduction on Dunnstral's part, but an instrumental shift in momentum that helped town win the game. Dunnstral was a viable miselim target before this play, having defended scum before the mason claim. This play not only kept the masons secret, but forced the scum team to night kill a slot that could have been a much needed miselimination.

Just a very slick, if simple, town play
2023/11/22
Datisi's University
Andresvmb rolled Loyal Vigilante. He was in the PoE for most of the game until he took a hero shot on N2, and that hero shot happened to be a correct scum read on the game's deepest wolf. This was close to perfect play from a townie in Andres' position, first goading his guilty (me) into an ascetic claim, before revealing the true nature of his investigative power. This guilty effectively lead the game to a swift close, with the other members of the scum team getting caught out on the mechanical and associative implications of the guilty.
2023/12/31
I'm in this, but whatever, someone had to do it.

This game was a very fun game, and we ended up quickhammering a Vanilla Townie on Page 7. The following days ended up being a large back and forth of trust and distrust mainly between the 4 of us, and through the arguing and possible doubt, the 4 of us were able to never actually end up killing each other off in someway and went Day 2, Day 3, and Day 4 with back to back to back scum lims and winning the game. This truly felt a group effort, and while there were some infighting, we were always able to get to the place we needed to get to for what I believe is one of the strongest group town performances of the entire year. There were a few others that did well in this game, but when I think back on this game, the town core of the 4 held strongest.
2024/01/04
This was a bit of a grueling game, as mountainous games can often be. With town choosing the "spare" route, but being unsuccessful in eliminating scum earlier in the game. The game came down to two consecutive days where
all the town
needed to find each other. Ydrasse and RCEnigma had previously been scum reading each other, but managed to successfully find each other as town over a series of three pages. This successful connection between two townies, managing to see through the noise the scum team was attempting to generate, was all that was needed to win the game. In fact, this 3 page back and forth between Ydrasse and RCEnigma was exactly what won the game for town in the end. In Ydrasse's words, this was a "rare town blitz."

Flavor Leaf
I'm nominating Flavor Leaf for two amazing, back-to-back scum wins, where he made himself practically conf town despite being scum.

In Micro Normal 1092, Flavor Leaf crumbed a role he didn't have since the beginning of Day 1, faked a soft inno, and then killed his inno to secure the claim's success. Additionally he masterfully pushed a mislim through on Day 2 in a way that looked like he was just tunneled town, and did it quickly enough so that the pocketed inno won't turn on him.

In Large Normal 245, Flavor Leaf rolled a rolecop traitor. He rolecopped Dannflor the Gunsmith, divined who he had a guilty on before he even said a word, and fakeclaimed a guilty on his scum partner. In his own words, he YOINKED the guilty from Dannflor. Then Flavor Leaf basically spent the rest of the game riding on the towncred of bussing his own partner, and every time a townie would start to suspect him, he would get them limmed. As several players noted, the game basically operated on a "townread Flavor Leaf or die" basis.
2023/11/22
Ausuka
Ausuka is an extremely competent scum player who, while not rolling a ton of scum games this year, has dominated in both of them. Mini Normal 2294 was a very clean game where Ausuka end gamed as scum against two very good town players in Morning Tweet and Klick. Open 885 was a game where Ausuka (repped in on her alt meowmeow) effectively dismantled all suspicion on her scum partner, lead multiple miseliminations without ever really being suspected, and at the end of the game had pretty much everyone eliminating the correct scum team as an option due to towny play and effective distancing. This nomination is missing a greater sample size but due to the lack of nominations and the quality of gameplay on display here I think this is a nomination worthy of consideration.
2023/11/22
Black
I think historically that people have been averse to giving body of work awards to people during their first year on site, but I think Black has more than proven she can tangle with the best as scum in an incredibly short time - in no short thanks to an abundance of scum rolls! Seriously, Black rolled scum and subsequently won all of Newbie 2111, Newbie 2113, Newbie 2116, and Open 885. In addition, I don't think the fact that most of these wins were in newbie games means a whole lot, since as most of us know, recent newbie games have been 80% experienced players anyway. I think the consistency and volume of scum play at work here is worthy of Don Corleone consideration.

Aureal - "(I wanted to) add mention that Black has now won her 6th straight Mafia game in Open 892, where despite a townie correctly using her partner's associatives to identify her as the last Mafia, Black played it cool and by the time someone declared intent on her, she had made him freak out enough that he unvoted and Black went on to secure three more miseliminations on her own afterwards for the win."
2024/01/08
Dannflor
Nth: Klick
Nth: Black
I consider Thestatusquo to be a player who always puts his all into a game, regardless of his alignment. He has an unmatched WIM and passion for the game that has really paid off this year when he's rolled scum. One of his first wins of the year actually comes from Team Mafia, Amnesiac Mafia, which is an event generally considered to be hugely town sided. I can probably count on one hand the number of times mafia has won a Team Mafia game in the past few years. Obviously Thestatusquo had a great team around him in this game, but he was noted as playing particularly well by several players in this game.

Thestatusquo was also an integral part of the mafia team that won Hollow Knight Mafia. No, he didn't end game, he got tracked to the person who died and was killed prematurely. But to that point, Thestatusquo was playing very well and was a part of a team that setup Gimli well to win.

Thestatusquo endgamed in Garlic Bread Heist, a game with several power town players.

Thestatusquo endgamed in Mini Normal 2316 even as town stopped the scum night kill *two nights in a row.*

Overall, I think Thestatusquo has shown the quality and consistency of play this year required for consideration for the Don Corleone award. He's a player where I genuinely fear him rolling scum against me.

Klick - "Really, really solid scum play. Everyone knows he's amazing as scum but he works his magic anyway"

Legends of the Buisness Company
Game was nightless with scum needing a lot of misyeets to win the game. It looked awful for them starting day 1 with town getting together and nearly figuring out the whole team, but through sheer determination and good teamwork the team was able to diffuse a strong town from figuring out the game. Even with later mishaps of losing 2 players the last 2 scum brought it home by getting a consecutive 4 misyeets to win the game for the team. Very good work by team and good coordination within PT.

Gimli Hollow Knight Mafia
where to start with this one.

first, look at the list of dead players:
Spoiler:
Image

after one mafia member fell day 1, disaster struck on night 1 and night 2. town's tracker ended up getting a guilty two nights in a row. the guiltied scum were in a relatively good position, one of them was being cleared on the basis of being a neighbour with a flipped scum, and they were also an activated ascetic that ended up not activating on the night he got guiltied.

another issue was that by the time shea was guiltied, gimli had already locked himself into his claim - nailsmith, a role that can forge a vig shot on one night, then vend that vig shot to another player.

gimli was not able to multitask.

so - asri, misty, and black's deaths?
those were vig shots
. gimli was forced into no-killing multiple nights in a row just to keep his claim alive and not be outed as scum. it took over a month from shea's execution for the game to end.

and he did it. the madman did it. going from being heavily suspected in the early days, to pocketing just about everyone alive. even at endgame, when mechanics were heavily pointing towards him, his towniness made town come up with incredible mechanical reasons for why someone else is scum, from traitor jailkeepers to multitasking public messengers to odd-night killing traitors and whatever else was there. morning tweet was voted out while there was a hard inno result claimed on her.

Thestatusquo - "In the game of Mafia, a hero did rise,
Gimli, the dwarf, with a gleam in his eyes,
His teammates were gone, taken out by surprise,
But Gimli still stood, determined and wise.

With cunning and wit, he played the game well,
Fooling the others with a convincing sell,
He laid out his case, with a confident spell,
And in the end, the town believed him well.

With a scummy award, he was crowned,
Gimli's victory was profound,
A lone wolf, but not unbound,
A master of Mafia, to be renowned.

So let us all cheer for Gimli, the one,
Who played with skill and got the job done,
He proved that in Mafia, even when alone,
Victory is possible, with a heart like stone."

Secrets of the Anuket Topaz
Secrets of the Anuket Topaz is a game that requires the scum team to be mindful of their own associations, because they're all going to get flipped eventually. This game was won by a team that worked well together and managed to distance so effectively that by the end of the game, everyone had essentially eliminated the correct possible team. While various members of the scum team came under fire at different points, the team operated well together to make sure none of them carried too much pressure at one time. I think this game is a very good example of mafia members *intentionally playing scummier* in a way that works towards their win condition by drawing attention away from team mates and undermining town cohesion. This was just a very good case study in team work.

Micro 1091 - Prism v. 1L Year
A very slick mafia performance between two players that came under fire frequently, but managed to play around each other such that the town could not arrive at a correct solve that included two mafiosos. This was an impressive win in a fairly stacked lobby. Dunnstral and GuiltyLion had to play well mechanically, effectively distance, and in limlo convince the town that they were actually both more likely to be paired with other players. This scum team seemed to function like a well-oiled machine, and as a result, they had a perfect game!
2023/12/31
One look at the scum PT shows it all. These 4 were in sync with each other, and controlled day play every single day phase of this game, and ended with a perfect scum game. Anytime one of them were in trouble, the others took action to either take some of the heat or find another push.
2023/12/31
Mostly nominating for Hu Tao's play. Hu Tao and Kitty both got guilted Night 1, but denied Mass Claim and fast limmed and bussed Kitty Day 2, then Hu Tao fake claimed a guilty on Day 3 on the person they knew had a guilty on them by the way they were posting. The ties in association with Hu Tao allowed Hu Tao to sneak the victory and helped get me faded in ELO.
2023/12/31
The Tracker Gambit by Alisae onto Doctor Drew helped the scum team coast through, and the way they all played together truly felt like vultures circling their prey with fun and sunshine.
2024/01/08
This team had a clean sweep during Team Mafia fooling both the town in this game as well as every teammate of the players they were playing against. The nature of Team Mafia, where players can discuss their reads with teammates leads to a very pro-town environment overall. Amnesiac Mafia is also a set-up where the mafia team cannot get rid of roles they fear and have to focus on getting rid of players they fear and manipulating the remaining instead. Of note, halfway through the game, Pink Ball devised a plan to get members of the mafia team "confirmed" as town, sealing the fate of the town as they had no choice but to be lead around by this mafia team. This is despite Frozen Angel being heavily suspected the entire game. This team also had to deal with some unfavorable replacements and watching members of the town slowly confirm one another. It is a miracle that they were able to sweep the game despite feeling like they were one wrong move away from diaster.
2024/01/08
I meant to do this after the game ended but I never nominate for Scummies so I kept forgetting. But this scumteam just completely ran this entire game with almost no opposition. I may not have played many games and I replaced into this one, but I have never *ever* seen a scumteam that dominated this severely and frankly effortlessly. They had us eating out of the palms of their hands, and I've never been happier to lose a game before. They're all great players in their own right but as a team? Transcendent.

Alianna
Let's start with some stats!
Did you know that in 2023, Alianna modded or co-modded 6 Newbie games? That's a THIRD of all Newbie games that were run this year.
She also modded 5 Open games in 2023.
She ALSO modded and backup/co-modded quite a few Normal games (more on this later).
Alianna constantly has at least one game running at every point in time, and she often has two (or more, if you consider games she's backup modding). This is a great contribution to the site in terms of moderation.

Putting the stats aside for a second, Alianna's moderation is of very high quality. Her games run smoothly, she's dedicated to doing her mod duties even when real life gets in the way, and there's a VC every pagetop (okay, maybe not EVERY pagetop). Notably, she managed to run a Newbie game with ten replacements (a huge number considering a Newbie game only has 9 players), and run it smoothly.

Oh, and did I mention how her dedication to modding goes beyond her own games? Every time I asked her to be a backup mod, she said yes with no hesitation. I think that's pretty cool.

Aureal - "Having played in a game she modded for my first game back here after a 16-year hiatus, she set my expectations for moderating very high and has consistently lived up to it in every game I've seen. Never in a game Alianna is moderating do you have to scrounge around for a vote count only to realize it's horribly dated. Never do you have to stare unhappily at the slot that hasn't posted in days and ask for a prod there. Never do you sit in a seemingly eternal twilight waiting for a flip. It's clear she cares greatly about her moderating responsibilities and strives to give the players the best experience she can."

Alisae for Pokemon + mafia have a Cop. The quality of the 2 games are enough, and frankly, I think these were a couple of the best games of the year. The sheer magnitude and scale of the Large Theme of Pokemon Battles II was enough, and then the overall story of how Pokemon Battles II played out would have been enough for me to nom this, but Mafia Have A Cop also lived up to that.

I’m underselling this. I don’t even need to say more, though, you all already know.

Skygazer is a prolific moderator whilst also lending a lot of her time to being a backup or co-mod to other users on the site. Skygazer posts frequent VCs, keeps games running smoothly, has great flavor, and generally does all the things one would expect from a great moderator and a great game. However, on top of the standard stuff, I want to highlight just the wide variety of kinds of games Skygazer runs for the community. Everything from Open games, Mini Themes, Micro Themes, Normal Games, and Newbie Games. Skygazer has run a truly staggering number of games this year, many of them with personally designed setups. I always feel comfortable joining a game moderated by Skygazer because I know it's going to a smooth experience with a personal touch of style.

A wonderfully insane xyzzy experience. The game provided the dead with a mechanic to influence the living, including winning mafia games from the dead thread. It also had a unique dual scum mechanic with a Prisoner's Dilemma built in.

Korina's previous game, Weird Dreams Mafia I, would've likely been worthy for this award if not for its tragic end at the hand of a griefer, but Korina did a wonderful job completely reinventing the concept used in the previous game and running the successor to the game with an equal level of craziness and insanity to the first. The game featured lovers-traitors who were able to win together and were each aligned with different factions (masons and mafia), as well as a limited cultafia. Truly the genius of a weird dream.

This one has approximately 11 months to figure out if anyone can do better, but for now it's going to say that this absolutely bonkers setup and the absolutely bonkers mechanic of the multiball mafia teams having to do the fucking prisoner's dilemma is taking the cake for now. That is all.

Korina Weird Dreams Mafia
This game had such amazingly done mechanics, it was actually incredible. FIrst of all, the
Nightmare mechanic
was just fantastic. It was so fun having a PT to get voted into and to do speculation of what invention would be best to give, but none of the inventions felt over- or under-powered. Second, the Falsely Prophetic Fridge was such a cool bastard concept. Like it was such an awesome source of misinformation. It's a real shame the game got thrown, but I think Korina does deserve the award. I would love to play another game with similar mechanics so much!

Open 878: Scarfolk Council
Many of us (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) loved Umlaut's flavour for this game, featuring the quirky and dystopian town of Scarfolk. I thought it was funny and well written. Umlaut's layout and formatting contributed to the aesthetics of the game. Especially impressive was that every VC came with its own image of a poster / book page from the fictional town. (Sadly it seems that some images are now broken. Or is it my wifi connection?)

biancospino clearly put a ton of effort into the flavour of this game. It included a number of news stories, daily weather reports, accounting records, Utopia-related crosswords, official communications, and more. She even took the silly article I wrote about murderous cats prowling the streets and edited it to perfection (or should I say
purr
fection?) to post in a VC. All of the flavour was incredibly well-written and brought the game's clearly-not-Utopian world to life.
2023/12/24
This is definitely, one hundred percent, the best and most enjoyable flavor I've had in a Mafia game ever. I literally called Aureal a queen in my first post for making this game. I mean, who WOULDN'T want to be a volcano gladiator???

In this uPick game, fferyllt came in with a vision. She fleshed out the character roles with reasonably suited powers to their characters, drawing a surprising amount of depth from even more obscure characters. For instance, the character I chose, Tasha Yar, came with powers flavored around actual lines of dialogue she had spoken, despite being a largely overlooked character who was only in the cast for one season (and while one line of dialogue is actually quite well-known the other certainly is not; even I had to do some digging for scripts to confirm that it was indeed her dialogue). I was not the only one who appreciated the character detail in roles: LLD thanked fferyllt (in the Discord spectator channel) for her effort in writing her Dax character the way LLD had envisioned in a plural-friendly way. Furthermore, not only did fferyllt write these rich, detailed role PMs, she fleshed out the game itself using the Trek character Q as the basis for an actual storyline which she elaborated upon at the start and end of every day. She made writing good character-specific scenes look easy and gave such life to the setting that I was inspired to write my own ending bit for my character.

In the last year black has taken the newbie queue by storm, amassing an impressive record that earned her (the somewhat tongue in cheek) nickname "the newbie scum queen" by willing a large number of scum games in a row. Black also jumped into the other queues on the site full force and even competed in team mafia, becoming a well known member of the site and the queues in a very short period of time. She has also integrated herself into the community side of the site, becoming a fixture in the discord as well as other parts of site culture. I've found her rise and her ability to integrate into the general meta of the site as a newbie to be impressive and think it deserves recognition.

DragonEater70
DragonEater70 has an unmatched enthusiasm for the game of mafia and the site in general. He's been actively involved in discussions about changes to normal games, has modded several games, and shown competence in his gameplay since joining the site in February. Notable works to me include DragonEater70's scum win in Fruit Mafia and his modded/designed games in Large Normal 245 and Mini Normal 2309.
2023/11/21
AnimatedWiz
AnimatedWiz is a great example of someone who shows up and immediately shows competence as both town and mafia. He was no small part of winning his first game as town, and managed to be a very strong part of a scum team that suffered a number of replacements in Mini Normal 2313, and despite ultimately losing, managed to be widely town read until they were mechanically caught out in a close finish. AnimatedWiz has shown to be a respectful and thoughtful player and I think think he shows great promise if he keeps playing games.

Hu Tao Tuesdays join date is in December, and frankly, you can’t tell they’ve only been on site for a year. They are consistently followed and lead as town, and are hyper paranoid scum read by many as well. In Random Nurse’ Normal, the scum team with Hu Tao were double guilted Night 1, and on Day 2, they were able to deny a Mass Claim from starting, hard bus their other partner, which I called out as a hard bus only to turn it back the next day when their fake claim Cop came out and they guilted the player who hadn’t had the time to announce their guilty on Hu Tao, thus causing a fast day and eliminating the actual cop. While they went down thereafter, they were able to tie enough associatives together, and the team of Davesaz, KittyTacky, and Hu Tao were able to pull the victory.

On the town side, they have also been consistently playing with different play styles, and consistently is able to have strong gut reads on where scum is along with getting multiple players to town read them. In games like Mafia Have A Cop and Large Normal 245, they had correct scum reads that nobody else was actively pushing.

I’m missing so many more town games here, and might have to go and link some more over the coming days, but the level of play Hu Tao presents is not the general play level of someone who has only been on this site for a year.

DragonEater70 - "I want to remark that she has INCREDIBLE reads as town even though they often go under the radar"
2023/12/31
Really nominating this one for Winston Chronicles. They pulled a heist, and hard controlled day team, and imo, they lead the scum team to a victory. I hadn’t seen much of T3 since then, but the level of day play control was strong here, and you can see their thought process from their individual notes. In addition to this, they had a good behind the scenes year modding games and joining the NRG.

Gimli Legends of the Business Company
Gimli replaced into a tough scum slot in this game. He already had two predecessors in his slot that not a lot of players felt were townie and was in a lot of PoE's by the time he replaced in. He replaced into a scumteam that had just had two members flipped back to back, and it didn't look good for the team in the immediate aftermath of those two flips. It was an interesting slot to replace into as the scumteam would now need 4 mislims in a row to win, and the scumteam only had one night kill to remove a player who couldn't be mislimmed. His other partner (me) was widely town read but there was a good chance Gimli could also have been limmed. I think Gimli did well to distance himself from his predecessors and established enough genuine looking reads to satisfy the rest of the town to not immediately look his way upon replacing in. In the words of the game mod Firebringer "to me gimli has one job to do and if he does it well enough last scum wins this 90% of the time. No matter everything else. That job is: Don't make the last scum look bad" which as Gimli's partner who was deeply embedded in the town was all I needed. Later in the game I asked Gimli to do things to help me win the game and Gimli was the perfect support person. When I asked Gimli to post reads to start influencing the other players he was able to work them in. When I needed Gimli to coordinate the quick hammer to win the game he was right there with me. I think what makes Gimli's replacement so great is that he didn't try to hero his slot or change people's perceptions or tried to work himself into a lead position as a replacement. Instead he acted as the perfect wingman to allow me to carry out the plan I had been working on all game. I've had scum partner replacements in the past completely blow up the team to try and make an impact. I cannot understate how crucial for our victory it was for Gimli to be understated and take direction.

Imaginality won this game with an admirable performance as a 1-shot Bulletproof SK. He did attract some early attention (1, 2), but it was nothing he couldn't shake off, and it positioned him well to slip unnoticed through Days 2 and 3. In a game with 3 killing roles besides himself and a Jailkeeper, he managed to dodge all Night Actions.

On Day 3, two townies had both softed power roles, one of them claiming they could clear a third town slot. Luck was definitely involved, but Imag managed to predict which PR we would kill as scum and killed off the other PR, putting us in one of the few scenarios that was not an auto-loss for Mafia and SK alike.

The masterstroke was definitely his play on Day 4, in 3v1v1. Imag took control of the narrative, for example advocating that we let the confirmed townie suggest the elimination. He correctly identified my slot as the remaining scum slot and cased us relentlessly in a way that had me completely paralysed. He made us look bad enough that I'm not sure I could have gotten an elimination through on him even if I had realised he was the SK. Which I didn't; I suspected both the two other unconfirmed townies of being the 3rd party above him.

It's clear Imag put a significant amount of thought into the game. I had the help of two hydra partners and still personally found it exhausting, at times, to push miseliminations and optimise Night Actions. Imaginality did it all by himself and made it look easy.

Conflict of interest: still shocked outraged and bedazzled by him being the SK.

Datisi's University
Enchant played a 3rd party role who *needed to be night killed by scum* in order to win the game. Armed with nothing but a 2-shot mailman ability, Enchant was able to successfully convince another townie to claim an innocent on him, thereby drawing the scum kill and fulfilling his win condition. I think this was impressive play and impressive usage of the 3p ability to win especially when considering the large number of other attractive night kill targets to the scum team.

For killing her teammate in HMS Mutiny. With this message.
Malakittens was a Traitor who did not know the rest of her team in this game (I am told the technical mafia.gg term is "Non-meeting Mafia"). At the start of the game, she fakeclaimed a different role, causing some players to townread her. Others yet started townreading her for her posting. There was one notable exception... her (unbeknownst to her) teammate Enchant, who started questioning her claim.

Now... Mala had a one-shot killing ability. I received this action submission on N2. She ended up causing
the only scum death until Day 5
.

In this game, Cook drafted a Werewolf Dayvig with three bullets and the ability to fire off multiple shots in the same day. She used them in a pretty ridiculous fashion, spread out across three days.

Day one: Cook is run up to E-1 for inactivity, and camelCasedSnivy asks her to claim. Her response? Shoot him. And then miss. Due to how camelCasedSnivy claimed, this ended up confirming him as not being Town, and he won as Unjester the following night.

Day two: Not that interesting for our story. Cook got an invention called the Trolley Problem Lever, which, if accepted and pulled, would have instantly outed her team and the Mafia as scum.

Day three: Bingle claims he has a powerful role that could break the game if he used it the wrong way. Cook makes the connection, calls him out on it. The wagons are deadlocked at E-2, Bingle is stalling and refuses to claim, and now Cook's partner is taking heat. So what does Cook do? Shoots them both. Yes, Cook shot her own teammate with a dayvig. Both flip scum. The massive towncred from being mech-confirmed lets her ride all the way to 3p ELO without so much as a passing glance from anyone else.

There was a lot of insane things this game, but I think the friendly fire that turned Cook from an E-1 to locktown takes the cake.

DEFCON 6.0
In this game, everyone thought Doctor Drew was obvtown after he successfully nuked T3, the mafia's deepwolf. Everyone, except Ircher.

Ircher, who was consensus scum, decided to nuke Doctor Drew despite being told repeatedly that Drew was town, and asked to cancel the nuke. Ircher, despite getting scumread for it, adamantly continued with nuking Drew - who then turned out to be mafia!

Oh yeah, and Ircher who was 3p did it because he needed to get rid of some towny people who would never be shot!
2023/12/31
The unfortunate scenario of ScumDrew action delayed by Klick, ending into Drew accidentally protecting their own kill on Alisae. Ridiculously unfortunate situation, ridiculously exciting to watch on an observer level.

JacksonVirgo, Random Nurse, Enchant, pretty much the entire playerlist (and the mod) of Large Normal 244
Technically, this is not the correct use of the Kodak Moment award, since it's supposed to be given for the most memorable moment. The thing is, and I'm sure a lot of people would agree, this game had A LOT of very memorable moments.

Some ridiculous, some funny, some depressing and some just chill.

Let's start with Day 2. JacksonVirgo, a member of the town, decided to fake claim a guilty on Psyche for no reason whatsoever. And then they refused to withdraw the claim. The result? Psyche, a town vig, eliminated Day 2 (later on it turned out to be a possibly game-winning move, since it prevented vigging the town Jailkeeper).

Day 3, Random Nurse sees that Save The Dragons has claimed ungated Roleblocker. Except a dead player is already an ungated Roleblocker. RN flips out and powerpushes STD... who was exactly what he claimed to be. Then Random Nurse posts this beauty blaming the horrible setup design.

Day 4, Enchant, a Vanilla Townie, declares intent to hammer CSF (a person who they pushed as scum, and who is actually scum). Time comes to hammer, Enchant posts this.

There are a lot more gems like Random Nurse being Batman or video game talk in twilight or the mod trolling the players or the worst desperately trying to signal to pisskop, and I unfortunately cannot list all of them. Nevertheless this is a great game to remember.

Additional context here and here

This is a funny moment that Kuribo had planned for about three days prior to posting it in his Team Discord for Team Mafia. Kuribo, along with the rest of the town, were currently getting snowballed by the mafia team. Additionally, the role mechanic had given Kuribo the same role multiple times and it had become more useless as the game went on, adding to Kuribo's frustration. He let out his frustration by doing up a whiteboard of Drixx's ISO and attributing this work to his assistant, Detective Daryl, who is a stuffed animal. He then defends Detective Daryl's drug habit and status as "Big Sexy" and does it again with a GuyInFreezer whiteboard. Spoiler: Detective Daryl isn't good at mafia, both Drixx and GuyInFreezer were town. The actual mafia team taunted Detective Daryl in thread.

I would like to nominate Pokemon Battles 2 for the Game of the Year.

This game was Alisae's self-proclaimed "magnum opus", and you could tell. The amount of work they put into the game and it's mechanics was apparent, and the attention to detail was second to none. This game featured everything from battling wild Pokemon encounters, using abilities that were unique to your Pokemon, evolving, and even a boss battle mechanic. The player list featured many staples on the site and even though there were many replace outs, it never took long for someone to fill the void.

Alisae's genius as a moderator was on full display here. They were extremely active and helpful, and even had an ongoing test battle simulator going for the players to practice and toy with. I will be anticipating the third installment in this series and I hope it comes around sooner than later!

Flavor Leaf - "A level up system with new moves and abilities were made for this game. over 20 players, with an incredible in game-narrative that played out. Truly one of the best modded games I've played. A battling wild pokemon mechanic every night, a big boss battle to fight, and evolutions with stats and hitpoints. I am not a mech heavy person, but this was such a fun game with an amazing group of players, and would play a Pokemon Battles III in a heart beat."

Prism Micro 1091 - Prism v. 1L Year
I think this game was quintessential mafia in every sense of the word. It featured polished modding and flavor, a simple setup with an incredible amount of depth for how basic the power roles really were, and both solid town play and scum play. I think this game is worth a read by anyone and I think it is bound to be overlooked for GOTY because it is a micro. But I think simpler games can and should be worthy of this award, and I can think of no better candidate this year than this one. It also includes the wonderful highlight moment of Pooky's god-tier mech speculation.
2023/12/24
This nom is slightly tongue-in-cheek (in the cheeky/flippant sense, not in the sarcastic sense), but bear with me.

Why does this game deserve the Game of the Year award?

1. Setup: this game was NewD3 which is
indisputably
the best setup on MafiaScum.net
/half-serious

2. Mods: great mods which I felt put in effort to make the game run well and who I enjoyed as mods.

3. Flavor: This game's flavor is definitely, one hundred percent, the best and most enjoyable flavor I've had in a Mafia game ever. I literally called Aureal a queen in my first post for making this game. I mean, who WOULDN'T want to be a volcano gladiator??? The commentary by the show's hosts was very well written and funny as well.

4. Playerlist and gameplay: this game definitely had a hype playerlist with 2 Paragon nominees and a Don Corleone nominee, as well as some other cool people (including 2 site newbies and a long time returning player). It definitely did not disappoint - action started early in Day 1 and continued throughout nonstop. The cohesion of the town was remarkable, with most town players being able to find each other and shrink the PoE, resulting in a smooth elimination of scum on Day 1.
The game ended up being a mechanical win, but I want to stress that the way I see it, by the end of Day 1 a town victory was simply impossible to prevent even if the game had magically become mountainous, due to how confident town was in their reads of one another.

Lich has done a lot of the legwork to overhaul how the wiki works and has been my go-to person when I need things on the Wiki updated. Lich has been diligent in making sure the front page gets regular updates, adding new set-ups to the wiki, and updating new roles as they are created (even offering new roles too). Lich has also done a lot of the wiki specific work that most people don't have the skills to do, such as templates and page designs. I think of Lich as the de facto MafiaScum Wiki administrator right now. This nomination is long overdue

Shea pushed forth an initiative that was long overdue, sending out an email to our member list inviting them back to the site. I think this was ultimately a success as countless users have returned to the community in some capacity, either via the discord, and even some mafia games. This was especially helpful because many returning players signed up for Team Mafia. Without Shea's skills in this task, it would not have gotten done because no one on the current mod team had the necessary skills or knowledge to push this through.

Ausuka
From her duties as the new normal list mod overhauling the normal game system, to her consistent contributions to the modding scene and the open setup design scene, Ausuka is a prolific contributer to the mafia side of the website. But I'd also like to call to attention her recent discussion threads "which element are you?" and "Ausuka ranks Pokemon starters", both popular discussion threads that have sparked community interest and discussion over the past couple months. I think Ausuka is a great example of someone who engages in all aspects of the community, tries to lead by example, and creates content for the community at large to engage with.

Quick question since this thread is for nomination and discussion:

Can you include games that start in 2022 but end in 2023? Is there an exact temporal limit for submissions?

Yes, games that started in 2022 and ended in 2023 count for 2023

02/19/2023 Firebringer T-Bone I will keep this short and too the point. T-Bone massively held his own in a nightless game as scum after two of his buddies had already flipped surviving and pushing himself and getting massive townread while having to get 4 miseliminations in order to win the game for his team. Not easy, and definitely worthy of recognition See the Game - Legends of the Buisness Company

2023/2/24 HighPrincessErinys xyzzy i designed this setup in 2019 This one has approximately 11 months to figure out if anyone can do better, but for now it's going to say that this absolutely bonkers setup and the absolutely bonkers mechanic of the multiball mafia teams having to do the fucking prisoner's dilemma is taking the cake for now. That is all.

Don Corleone nominations require at least two games referenced to count since Don Corleone is a Body of Work award. Feel free to submit a Goodfellas nomination instead though!

White Knight
2023/02/25 T-Bone Gimli Legends of the Business Company Gimli replaced into a tough scum slot in this game.

As someone who finds it hard to roll scum and played like 15 games last year and only played scum once. I find this restriction annoying.

2/17/2023 Firebringer NorwegianboyEE, Shirou, T-Bone, Gimli Legends of the Buisness Company Game was nightless with scum needing a lot of misyeets to win the game.

I don't know if this is a thing, but i agree wholly with this nom and should prob have made it myself if Fire didn't. T-Bone played super well in this game, kept the scum team together, made good strategies, and even won the game for us because of how well their standing was with the town. Definitely deserved.
Norwe is spontaneous, has a stream-of-consciouness posting style, usually posts on catch-ups by commenting on past pages posts, gets rather fired up in certain moments in games, is relatively as playful as me in games and likes casual shitposting

2023/03/19 DragonEater70 Korina Weird Dreams Mafia This game had such amazingly done mechanics, it was actually incredible.

Goodfellas
2023/03/24
Datisi Gimli Hollow Knight Mafia
where to start with this one.

first, look at the list of dead players:
Spoiler:
Image

after one mafia member fell day 1, disaster struck on night 1 and night 2. town's tracker ended up getting a guilty two nights in a row. the guiltied scum were in a relatively good position, one of them was being cleared on the basis of being a neighbour with a flipped scum, and they were also an activated ascetic that ended up not activating on the night he got guiltied.

another issue was that by the time shea was guiltied, gimli had already locked himself into his claim - nailsmith, a role that can forge a vig shot on one night, then vend that vig shot to another player.

gimli was not able to multitask.

so - asri, misty, and black's deaths?
those were vig shots
. gimli was forced into no-killing multiple nights in a row just to keep his claim alive and not be outed as scum. it took over a month from shea's execution for the game to end.

and he did it. the madman did it. going from being heavily suspected in the early days, to pocketing just about everyone alive. even at endgame, when mechanics were heavily pointing towards him, his towniness made town come up with incredible mechanical reasons for why someone else is scum, from traitor jailkeepers to multitasking public messengers to odd-night killing traitors and whatever else was there. morning tweet was voted out while there was a hard inno result claimed on her.
