While you was not sure, he just admitted to be on Kira side.
You are not sure, what to make of this plan. Maybe if you could hear his head monologue, it would be not so silly?

Kira was defeated. It was not hard to deduce remaining pawn, considering how angry he was. While not executed, it's unlikely he will live long anyway.

Near River, while didn't manage to catch Kira redhanded, striked down one pawn. While trading King for Pawn is not beneficial, maybe that's for better?
Still, he is dead.

In long run, there's only one winner: Shinigami. But atleast, no one will be scared of sudden retribution. For better, or worse.
