Special Orders
On our way to the beach, we noticed Robin and Lewis working on a large notice board over by Lewis's house.

Lewis explained that thanks to the success of Content Farm, the local economy has been booming - and as a result, people were looking for ways to spend some of their hard-earned cash. With this new notice board, people can post larger-scale requests than the sort Pierre usually gets. We've been encouraged to give it a try!

The Special Orders board is up! New orders will be posted weekly.

I took the liberty of picking the order today - as one of them was "Catch 20 Ocean fish," which dovetailed nicely with what we were planning to do anyway. We finished this request, earning
1500G
, and we got to keep the fish. (Or rather, sell them to Willy.)

Bus StopAs a reward for completing the Vault, the Junimos have repaired the bus! We can check it out at our leisure.

Note that
exploring

One thing I just realized - my start-of-day announcement for Fall 4 said that we got five Basic Retaining Soil from Jodi. When I did the playthrough today, we actually got five Quality Fertilizer instead. I'm guessing there must be some sort of random element to spontaneous gifts via mail, so would advise people not to get too attached to anything posted there.

Calico Desert

Pam shows up at the bus at 10:10 AM; once she arrives, we purchase a ticket. We hop on the bus and *presto* - at Calico Desert before we can blink!
The bus will remain on standby until we are ready to depart; the ticket is round-trip.

Points of interest:
  • The area in general has some forage available; we can see
    Cactus Fruit
    and
    Coconuts
    available for harvesting.
  • Over by the road, a desert trader has set up shop in a tent. Unlike most merchants, he isn't interested in gold. He prefers payment in geodes and gemstones.
  • In the southwest corner, another merchant has set up shop. This shop is more the brick-and-mortar sort. The shopkeep -
    Sandy
    - greets you enthusiastically. She's excited to hear that the bus from Stardew Valley is back in service, and hopes you'll be by regularly to buy things from her. She mentions that Emily's told her all about you; they must be friends.
    New NPC:
    Sandy
. She can be interacted with outside of shopping and is eligible to receive gifts, but is not single.

  • At the back of Sandy's Oasis, a bouncer guards the back door. He doesn't seem interested in any sort of interaction - or in letting us pass.
  • There's a large dinosaur
    skeleton
drying out in the sun in the western section.
  • The northwest corner has a pond that looks like it may have some fish in it.
  • Also in the northwest corner, there's a cave. Popping inside real quickly, there's a
door with a skull on it.
The door appears to be locked, but we do have a skull-shaped key ...
  • In the northeast corner,
    three mysterious pillars
poke out of the sand. The spot in the middle looks curious, but nothing happens when we step inside.
  • There are a few dig spots here as well. Bringing the hoe with us could yield some items.

Both merchants may have rotating stock, so no guarantees any of this will be available in future trips. Anything we can afford, we can buy today.
Additionally, it will cost either 500G or a Warp Totem: Desert to come here at all; if we're coming to shop in the future, I recommend exploring to find out what the merchants have that day.
We can test out the Skull Key on the door; doing this with exploration is an option (and will lock in entering the door).

Skull Cavern

The Skull Key fit into the lock perfectly. We opened the door and stepped into a brand new dungeon ... or perhaps, a very old one.

Superficially, the place looks similar to the Mines, in that there are rocks, mineral nodes, gem nodes, and hostiles abound. We saw more of a variety than what the Mines dished up - copper, iron, and gold nodes. Topazes. Rubies.

No sign of any checkpoints here. We'll have to start from scratch every time we enter.

Sometimes there are shafts instead of staircases. These let us skip multiple floors at once, but we take falling damage when we use them.

We made it to floor 23 before a combination of low HP and time chased us out.

The enemies there are tougher than what we've seen in the mines. Here's what we've encountered so far:

Mummies
: These are slow and ponderous. Easy to lure them into a rock and keep away from them. Downsides: they hit hard, they have a lot of HP, and when they go down,
they get back up again
after a period of inactivity. The sword had no effect on them while they were downed. They also liked to show up in narrow corridors, which makes keeping away from them more challenging. As we weren't able to kill any, no idea what sort of loot they drop.

Serpents
: These green snake-like creatures fly - and they fly fast. They don't hit quite as hard as the mummies do, but they're a lot better at getting hits in. They like to circle around and strike from behind. Like bats, they can show up from out of nowhere, even in areas previously thought cleared. The one saving grace is that they make a distinctive sound when they show up, giving you the opportunity to prepare for them. They drop void essences (frequently) and the occasional spicy eel (a nice food item that boosts luck and speed both).

Purple slimes
: We've seen slimes before. These ones hit harder than any slime we've seen so far, and they have a lot of HP. But they're still just slimes.

Giant purple slimes
: Not only bigger, but sometimes they split into a bunch of smaller slimes upon death. One slime isn't a threat; six most certainly can be, especially when they hit you with a slowing debuff. They drop slime, coal, and occasionally iridium ore.

Blue ghosts
: These act just like the regular ghosts in the Mines. When killed, they drop Omni Geodes.

Dinosaurs
: We saw one of these on a prehistoric-looking floor. They breathe fire. One dropped a Dinosaur egg.

The dig spots just had clay.

All in all, we walked away with over 100 stone, 16 coal, 9 quartz, 21 iron, 3 copper, 10 gold, and 1 iridium. Also two wood.
Gems: two topazes, three rubies, and one diamond. Also six omni geodes.
Drops: 13 void essences, 15 slimes, 1 spicy eel, 6 sap, 1 dinosaur egg, 3 bone fragments.

We spent about three cheese altogether, staying in Calico Desert for about 12 hours.

Do we have the recipe for roots platter / miner's treat? I think we should craft two of each + some pale soup / tortillas / other efficient food, and then go complete the challenge - it gives a lot of gold.

But before that let's plant all the seeds we have.

Miner's Treat we have. Bottleneck is milk; we can craft two if we don't put today's milk ration in the cheese presses. (+125/+56, +3 mining, +32 magnetism). Requires buying Sugar from Pierre.
Roots Platter we have, but can't craft any (requires Winter Roots).
Pale broth we have. We can craft a max of two today; bottleneck is the white algae. +125/+56.
Tortillas, we don't have the recipe for. I think maybe Gus might sell that one; we'd have to swing by at noon or later to check.

Other options:
Stir Fry: can craft three, if we buy oil from Pierre. +200/+90. Kale is the bottleneck here; we have three kale leftover from spring.
Radish Salad: we'd have to buy both oil and vinegar from Pierre, but we have 27 radishes. +200/+90. Bottleneck here is probably our cash-on-hand.
Fried Mushroom: bottleneck here is morels. We have five on hand; might be more in the mushroom cave. +135/+60/+2 attack. Have to buy Oil from Pierre.

We also have existing stocks of healing items. 50+ melons (+113/+50) if we want a good ratio of bulk to power. A few silvers and golds too, which are better (but less bulk). We've also got a few chocolate cakes (+150/+67), some purple mushrooms, and a couple of super cucumbers.

Realistically, we got to floor 23 today, but we spent time on wandering around the desert first. We spent three cheese; we have six left. Today's luck is better than yesterday's was; I'd think we'd have decent odds of making it if we went straight to Skull Cavern with one good stack of healing items.

We've got a bunch of fall seeds we could plant, as well as some wheat. That plus animal maintenance will probably mean a late start for a Skull Cavern run. Later still if we add Pierre to today's list.

(expired on 2023-10-11 23:00:00) left to help refine today's plan, or to suggest a different one.
I'm especially looking for feedback on how we should prioritize our time today - if we should rush Skull Cavern (i.e. be at the bus stop at 10:10 AM sharp, and whatever doesn't get done waits until tomorrow) or if we should prioritize getting the cooking / shopping with Pierre / planting done.

Take two on Skull Cavern.

We're going to prioritize planting and cooking over victory. That means a trip to Pierre to see what all we can get.

Playthrough to start shortly!

Planting and watering: finished at 10:10 AM.
Animals: the chickens were too scattered to hunt them down and pet them. We did everything else, though. 11:10 AM.
Hit up the mushroom cave to see if there were any morels there. (Nope.)
Got to Pierre's at 12:20 PM. Picked up a quest to slay four lava slimes for 500G. Bought 5 Oil at 200G a pop, for a total of 1000G spent.
Got to the stove at 1:10 PM. Cooked up Fried Mushroom x5, spending all our morels (and some common mushrooms and the oil).
Caught one chicken on the way to the bus stop. Arrived at Skull Cavern at 1:40 PM.

And we got lucky. Shafts were unusually prevalent, allowing us to skip a notable chunk of the dungeon. By the time it got late, we'd made it to
floor 37
.

New enemy:
- Iridium Rock Crab: green rock crabs that hide under iridium mining nodes. The one we engaged and killed dropped iridium ore, so they may be worth fighting.

New intel:
- Mummies can be permanently killed by bomb explosions. (A serpent dropped a bomb, and a mummy just happened to die next to a large cluster of rocks.) The mummies drop solar essence and
cloth
. The cloth can be turned in to the community center as part of the Artisan bundle.

Also, we got credit for killing the four lava slimes while fighting the purple slimes in Skull Cavern. So we can turn this in tomorrow if we see Lewis.

Haul list:

Ore: Copper x33, Iron x31, Gold x20, Iridium x4, Coal x15, Stone x120.
Geodes & gems: Omni Geode x10, Quartz x6, Jade x2, Fire Quartz x1, Topaz x2, Amethyst x2
Monster drops: Void Essence x6, Cloth x1, Solar Essence x1, Slime x5, Sap x3
Forage: Cave Carrot x2, Red Mushroom (Silver) x2

We used four standard cheese; we are down to two.

Sew and SewAnother morning visitor to the farm - Emily, this time. She was impressed by the progress we've made so far - but she was more interested in the fact that we'd managed to acquire some cloth.

According to Emily, cloth is the major ingredient in producing our own clothing. We just need a sewing machine - which she just so happens to have!
We have Emily's permission to use her sewing machine.

Clothing requires not just cloth; it also requires a secondary ingredient. We've been encouraged to experiment.
