Survivormeet: 'Straya

G'day mates!

I've (semi-jokingly) mentioned a few times that I would host an Australian survivormeet, and following the last survivormeet, a few of you mentioned you'd be interested (maybe also jokingly!). In any case, Stoive (winner of Survivor: Village, woah!) and I are planning to make it happen.

When?

Because of the significant travel distance for anyone from not-Australia, we'd be aiming for sometime in 2025 to give people plenty of notice/planning time etc. We'll be seeking feedback on what times of year would work best for people, but would veto December/January due to flights and accommodation being more expensive during those months.

Where?

This is not set in stone, but we are currently looking at the Blue Mountains as a likely location, which is about 2 hours by train from Sydney. Stoive and I will cover accommodation costs, but I would recommend looking up the prices of flights etc. from your location to get an idea of travel costs.

Other deets:

I'd be aiming to have the meet last for about a week, to allow enough time for the Survivor game, as well as downtime for other activities and exploring the world heritage area that is the Blue Mountains (or wherever else we decide to have the meet).
We don't have a maximum number of attendees/players in mind at the moment, but would love to hear from anyone interested in helping with game design/general running of the game.

If you'd be interested in playing, helping to run/design the game or just hanging out, let us know! If anyone has a preferred time of year in mind, that would also be great to know, but for now we're just gauging interest.

I did say if I was going to do another meet it would be in Australia...okayyyyyyy I would just need something solidified towards the end of 2024 (like november or december) so I can get the time off work.

Sure, ideally dates will be solid from around 12 months out, when flights start becoming bookable.

I would be extremely /in for this - unsure if it would be to play or to help out (need to talk to Cody about it) but I'd absolutely make the trip either way

I will declare /in.

My best time is most likely around Easter, but I will hopefully have enough leave to do whenever.

Hmm. On one hand I will be out of grad school, so that's good!

My wife wants to do a family trip to Disneyland in 2025 so that's tricky budget-wise.

My daughter wants me to host one again and I told her not until I'm out of grad school, which would be that year. She'll be disappointed but she can build a bridge and get over it.

In conclusion, I am tentatively excited but can't commit to anything yet.

I am going to be 98% for this. The literal only thing that would keep me is if I ever get fired from my job somehow.

While I highly doubt this will be possible at all for me in any way, I *do* know what sort of things you need to do in order to *go* to Australia from the US.

Firstly you need a passport obviously, but you do absolutely need to have a travel visa, this cannot be skipped even if it's only for a week. Also when I went with my son and his dad, the flights per person round trip were $2400 and the flight for my son wasn't much less at $1800, and this was in August. And this was economy pricing with several flight connections. Also, the flight from LAX to Melbourne was a 14-hour and change flight, and since I was traveling from New York, it was 31 hours total in travel time from when I left to when we arrived at my sisters' house. So do not plan to fly in and play same day, I'd suggest game design to plan to have a whole full 24 hours that isn't game time at the start.

As an aside I lived in the blue mountains as a kid and the nearby towns have some great galleries, hikes, and other such stuff.

For those who would want to do a holiday I was also a travel agent in Sydney for a couple of years, I'll hook you up to avoid tourist traps and domestic travel if you are wanting to explore before/after the meet.

The opportunity to meet ambic, Espe, AND mf'ing Excella Gionne herself?? I'm definitely interested (also I never ever read this forum so please someone ping me on discord when there are more details). I will say that October and November are busier for me than any other time of the year and I've got a standing engagement around US Memorial Day (last weekend of May) but otherwise I'm quite open.

Also, if anyone is interested in doing more sightseeing outside the meet, I'd like to do more than just play survivor if I'm travelling halfway round the world and wouldn't mind having company, so hit me up.
