iodine comes in a vibrant purple colour. the human body doesn't naturally produce iodine, but it is vital for the proper functioning of said body. it's often used for school experiments to help people learn - testing samples for starch, primarily. it's also used for spacecraft propulsion! it's quite an efficient propellant, apparently. it has less atomic weight than xenon, which is usually used, but has lower ionization energies? while i don't really understand it, it seems like that means it lasts longer.
