Song Contest 209 (Results are up!)

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sat Dec 23, 2023 4:17 am

Post by Song Contest »

Welcome to the Two-Hundred-and-Ninth Song Contest!
This contest is brought to you by bread! Bread: the thinking person's sandwich infrastructure.

Submit your song via this FANCY FORM!

What is the MafiaScum Song Contest?

The MafiaScum Song Contest is a competition modeled after the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It's a means to gain exposure to new music through the tastes of your peers, like it or not. Those that enter must also vote for the people they are running against based on how much they like the songs. Everyone picks an alias in the form of a country (any one of your choosing) and sends in a song that they like in order to expose it to the other contestants. After voting, they are tallied in the thread and a winner is named. No matter who wins, everyone wins by gaining new knowledge of songs, artists, albums and genres of music in the process!

List of Previously Entered Songs

How to Participate in the Song Contest:

1. Find a song that you like on any internet medium that isn't restricted or private.

2. Submit it via the form linked above!

3. After submitting, you must confirm that you've entered by either posting in this thread or sending a PM to the Song Contest account.

4. Wait until I reveal the entries. You may or may not be cut (as stated at the end of this post).

5. Once entries are revealed, you will rank your top 10 countries! You will do this via a Google Form link to be provided later. The point values are as follows:
12 points - 1st
10 - 2nd
8 - 3rd
7 - 4th
6 - 5st
5 - 6th
4 - 7th
3 - 8th
2 - 9th
1 - 10th
Please rate fairly by giving all countries a listen. You may not vote for yourself. Everyone, regardless of entry or cut status, may vote, so you can still participate even if you chose not to enter or if you got cut! However, if those that entered and are accepted do not vote, they will get a point penalty (see below), so please consider that before entering.

6. Wait for results. It's that simple!

What entries are/aren't allowed?

In order to eliminate bias, certain entries based on previous performance are banned. After dozens of contests and a following of a vague "Code of Ethics" by the Song Contest population, there have been so many entries that a rule system is now in place as to what can and cannot be entered. Please refer to the list of entered songs linked above and CTRL+F your artist AND song name to make sure it isn't included in the following list.

What isn't allowed?

-You cannot enter an artist that has won ANY contest in the past, no matter how far away that contest is.
-You cannot enter an artist that has been entered in the last 15 contests.
-You cannot enter a song that has been entered before, regardless of placement. (You can enter a cover or different version of that song.) For example: You cannot enter in "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes, but you can enter in "The Hardest Button to Button" by The White Stripes.
-You cannot enter an artist that has achieved a top-three finish in a Battle of the Best. For example: You may not enter anything by the Doves, as they got 2nd in a BotB.
-You cannot enter something that is not a 'song'. We generally interpret this term very loosely, but here are some examples:

Things considered a song: Anything created with an actual artist and song title that is INTENDED for the listener, even if it's painful to listen or even if there's nothing included (Examples: Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit, Eminem - Lose Yourself, Barney - I Love You, John Cage - 4'33, Sunn 0))) - 0))) Bow 1, etc.)

Things not considered a song: Anything without an artist or title, a video clip of something random, a comedy routine (unless it's an actual song a la Stephen Lynch), a large square wave, an animal barking, total silence not being attributed to an artist, etc. (Examples: A clip of a comedian's standup special, an ibex screeching, a clip of a game show, a clip of someone screaming, etc.)

I will let you know if your entry does not meet the criteria of a 'song', but it should be fairly obvious.

What IS allowed, then?

-You can enter an artist that has achieved second place or lower at least 15 contests ago, as long as you do not repeat a song by that artist.
-You can enter an artist that reached the top three in a song contest, unless it won that contest or also got top three in a Battle of the Best.
-You can enter a different version of a song entered before, such as a cover (or the original if the cover was entered first). For example, Johnny Cash's Hurt has already been entered, but you can still enter Nine Inch Nails' version of Hurt.

Other than that, you're good! If your entry violates one of these rules, you'll have until the deadline to fix it or we reserve the right to deny your entry (as if you haven't entered one at all) due to time constraints.

Voting

Anyone is welcome to vote regardless of whether they've entered a song into the contest, but
those who entered songs are required to vote
. If you enter a song and fail to vote, you will be penalized in the form of deductions from the points your song earned from other people's votes (see below).

If fewer than 75% of the people who entered the contest have voted by the end of the first deadline, the voting deadline will be extended, and anybody who hasn't voted will get a penalty. This process will repeat until either 75% of entrants vote or until 16 days have passed (three extensions). As more extensions are needed, those who haven't voted yet will receive escalating penalties, as follows:

-If you fail to vote and fewer than three extensions are needed: You lose 12 points
-If you vote after the first extension: You lose 5 points
-If you vote after the second extension: You lose 10 points
-If you vote after the third extension: You lose 15 points
-If you fail to vote, even after three extensions: You lose 20 points

Ties in final scores will be broken in favour of the entry with the most first-place rankings, then the most second-place rankings, and so on.

All ballots received before the final results are posted will be accepted, even if they come in after deadline.

Reserved Countries

Mount Celeste

(expired on 2024-01-03 07:59:00)

Spoiler: If we get more than 26 entries, the 26 participants in the competition will be decided based on the following criteria:
1. First-time entrants

2. Last winner (schadd_)

3. Current Song Contest Team (ChannelDelibird)

4. Any entrant who was cut in the period of the last 3 contests (except those cut for not voting) and has not used their guaranteed bid.
3 Contests remaining: Nobody!
2 Contests remaining: Nobody!
1 Contest remaining: Nobody!

6. Any entrant who failed to vote in the previous contest

Please note that the standard deadline has been slightly adjusted to better represent when I will realistically be able to process submissions/results, with a countdown timer added as standard to help players keep an eye on deadlines.

Less in our favour: we're short a couple of entries for a full contest.

Extending deadline again by 48 hours.
We are one song short of a functional contest, I'm afraid. If you're interested and have thus far forgotten/been on the fence about entering, please do get involved!

Okay, so 2 big things about this contest.

First off, this is one of the overall highest quality contests I've been a part of! Every song was just really well put together, had something unique and intriguing to it, and made me want to relisten. I'm really impressed!

Secondly, this is definitely a contest to ensure you have your headphones in for. Many of the songs rely on stereo sound and panning, and it would be a shame to miss out on that!

Spoiler:
Australia: Scott Walker - The Old Man's Back Again
Ooo, loving that bass line in the left ear! And a really nice, rounded, clear voice. The strings come in with some really nice accents without overdoing anything. The swelling into the choral voice accompaniment is really good too!

What a cool and interesting portrayal of the personified Death! It's tragic in a lot of ways and really well done!

Barbados: Megan Thee Stallion ft. Spiritbox - Cobra (Rock Remix)
This is...interesting!
It's a mix of things I'm not really a fan of - the current rap scene, harder/rockier songs, some screaming of lines - but it all comes together pretty nicely into a good balance and circles a decent hook. It doesn't overdo any one of these elements, but lets them work together to actually deliver some message, some depth, that I usually find lacking when I listen to songs which focus on these elements. I actually really enjoyed it, despite my expectations!

Sudan: Justin Greenhouse - Escaping the City
This is a really good, um, altrock/emo(?) song. (sorry, I've been out of this kind of scene for far too long apparently.) I like the build, I like the vocalizations, the guitar is nice despite being just a tinge harder than I'd usually lean towards, it all fits together to make a very nice song!

You can hear at the start when he says he's been locked up alone for too long that he's like, in a room echoing back at him. It's an effective picture of someone trying to escape their bonds. The way he says and melds the "grabbing and clawing and bearing their teeth" line is really neat, you can almost feel the lines fighting against being pulled down by this attack. It's really neat!

Scythia: The Dread Crew of Oddwood - Skeletons
Hahaha okay, this is fun! XD

I love the voice, I love the out of tune, like, parlour piano and the bar performance feel of this. It's fun, it tells a bunch of small anecdotal tales, the chorus is fun and catchy. The whole thing is silly yet serious, fun yet ominous. It's gotta be from some movie or musical I'm sure. If not, it should be!

Chile: Zapla - Is It Love?
This is a nice mellow piece. He's a little harder to understand, but I like what affectations he does to his voice. His lilting voice is nice, it almost sways. I also like that he went a bit long with the instrumental breaks in this piece. It adds to that sway, to some of the uncertainty and the ungrounded easiness. It's a lot like watching a leaf falling on a relatively undisturbed day.

Antarctica: Rabbit Junk - What Doesn't Kill You Will Make You a Killer
"Like Clockwork I..." is a really cool sound, and it almost tick-tocks the way he does it, which is tough with that many words to fit in. It is well contrasted with the ladies whines, and with the more flowing bit in the middle just before the instrumental and switch in styles, around that 2 minute mark - I guess probably that's when the intro leads way to the song?

This is definitely not my thing, but it's pretty cool and I like the stuff they did here.

Italy: Marta Del Grandi - Snapdragon
Great intriguing start! I love the layering, and the vocals add such a cool popping around effect to it! Love the drum start to it, gives it that drive it needs.

Pleading with a flower to keep silent about a misdeed, possibly a murder/burying of a body? That's kinda the feel I get. The descent into chaos of this song is really cool and it really builds into it well! It's almost Dionysian. Very cool!

Zanarkand: Guerilla Toss - Retreat
Well this is a disorienting feel. Kinda like falling down Alice's rabbit hole. Or maybe something more akin to the Labyrinth. I can definitely picture the puppets dancing around an unconscious body in the instrumental break. Cool use of polyrhythms for the disorientation effect actually!

Mount Celeste: Hyper Potions - Snow Day
Cool 8-bit feeling happy song! :)

Wanna play in the snow? Why of course! It's sunny and warm and not windy, what an ideal day to build a snowman with a friend! We have no cares in the world!

New Zealand: Morningsiders - Empress
Nice clear piano, with a cool 5/8-6/8 off-balance dance to it, like rolling down a hill in a bucket!
It's got a really Guy-falls-for-Girl-dancing-ina-sundress-all-carefree-like-and-realizes-he's-not-happy-with-his-current-relationship-so-now-he-lusts-towards-her vibe to it.

I wonder if her name was Dawn

Mali: Divine Fits - For Your Heart
I hope this video is good for this one, the other link was unavailable unfortunately. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTcICswdVjs

Ooo okay, creepy castly vibes to start. A little Monster Mash/Thriller-y, so not like the scary castly type. More the hip misunderstood vampire castly type.
"up all night, I walk the ceiling" :thonk: was I right? XD

It's a cool beat, this has so many layers that create such an odd feel. It's off-kilter, emotional, colourful yet muted. Misunderstood. I keep coming back to that.

"Tell me why you keep me searching in the dark for your heart" basically captures everything I felt about this song. Very cool!

eSwatini: Meute - Loss of Hope
I really love the energy these guys bring! The way they build. How they use marching band instruments to make this club sound and feel. The way they interact and how that makes the music feel.

It's honestly such a groove, such a bop, I felt it was well worth sharing here!

Portugal: Kiltro - What Gives
Great way to send off the contest! Brings the whole energy back down and to a close. Very eerie in the sounds they put into the right ear.

Really cool sound and feel to the song! I with I could understand him more clearly, I was glad the words were in the video description. The song itself definitely felt like it was floating, maybe slowly sinking. Pretty neat!

Honestly, this was one of that hardest contest I've had to score!

Spoiler: Hey ChatGPT, rewrite my song notes to sound like Shakespeare

12pts - Italy Marta del Grandi:

Aye, this melody speaks to mine heart,
In myriad ways, a delightful art.
I shall explore more of her minstrelsy,
For intrigue hath ensnared my curiosity.

10pts - Portugal Kiltro What Gives

Ne'er could discern the song's true kin,
At its commencement, a sign profound.
The vibe, I fancy, doth appeal,
Thom Yorke's essence, yet more fair than eerie.

8pts - Mali Divine Fits

Verily, the sleaziness doth captivate,
No vox till 1:15, a bold decree.
Much to cherish herein, the casual slip
Into the chorus, a singer's wise reprieve.

7pts - New Zealand Morningsiders

The piano's pleasant tune, a verdant mark,
An odd time signature, doubly embraced.
Yet, the folky chorus stamps with red,
Horns soloing, a green-checked grace.

6pts - Austraila Scott Walker The Old Man's

Marry, I hath ne'er ventured 'pon Scott Walker's realm,
Yet, methinks I should, a notion that may find a harmonious helm.

5pts - Chile Zapla is it love

Honest in my expectation, bland alt-R&B foreseen,
Yet, to my surprise, a soft rock's lovely sheen.

4pts - eSwatini Meute Loss of Hope

Verily, a mirthful and singular delight,
Yet, in truth, were those audience sounds in post brought to light?

3pts - Scythia The Dread Crew of Oddwood

Nay, a sea shanty's charm escapes my ear,
Sailor ska, as I dub it, doth draw near.
Yet, the fellow's gravelly tone doth find favor,
A pleasing note within this musical endeavor.

2pts - Mt Celeste Hyper Potions

'Tis pleasant, yet akin to a familial journey's tune,
Background music for a slideshow, under the gentle moon.

1pt - Barbados Megan Thee Stallion Cobra

An intriguing thought, what if the original song did play so?
A wild notion, verses seem a transplant, a peculiar show.
Yet, the presented idea doth hold a charm,
A concept that, in its essence, may disarm.

Sudan Justin Greenhouse Escaping The City

A rare SoundCloud link doth grace mine ear,
The vocals, distinct, from the mix appear.
Little more to speak on a genre not to my taste,
Thus, few words emerge in this musical repast.

Antarctica Rabbit Junk

A melody suited for those of twelve years,
Unexpectedly, a classic heavy metal steer.

i was going to learn the keyboard and write several ballads
But i went to a barbeque and got lost by the tater salad

Spoiler: I didn't wait until the last minute this time

Antarctica (Rabbit Junk - What Doesn't Kill You Will Make You a Killer)
I'm sorry, I'm finding this one way too hilarious because for reasons unknown to me I just immediately started picturing it being used in an Utena AMV. With lots and lots of shots of Akio. I must be watching too many Utena AMVs recently. The second phase broke me out of that a bit (though I can still totally see it working in an Utena AMV) and just generally enjoyed rocking with it.

Sudan (Justin Greenhouse - Escaping the City)
Melancholy rock is gonna have an easy time scoring for me. I stopped eating my giant cookie so I could hear this one better without crunching in my head.

New Zealand (Morningsiders - Empress)
The first part was fine then it really kicked in halfway through amping up the chorus vocals then getting in an instrumental solo and closing it out strong.

eSwatini (Meute - Loss of Hope)
Techno dance with xylophones? Sure, it's got a good bopping energy to it.

Italy (Marta Del Grandi - Snapdragon)
Nothing too fancy but I liked the beat and the more unusual percussion.

Mount Celeste (Hyper Potions - Snow Day)
Vibrant happy chiptune that I don't have to feel bad about when my attention strays because there's no lyrics I'm failing to pay attention to, I'll take it. Gave me some Snowdin from Undertale vibes.

Portugal (Kiltro - What Gives)
The ethereal nature is pretty cool, but the enunciation of the lyrics is so thick I couldn't really make out anything and I feel like I'm missing out on a good bit because of it.

Mali (Divine Fits - For Your Heart)
Linked video not available so hopefully the one search brought me is the same. Long instrumental/noise opening gives me 80s vibes and the echoing vocals just enhance that impression. Not bad.

Australia (Scott Walker - The Old Man's Back Again)
Nice mellow vibe and poetic lyrics, though maybe a little more energy would've kept my attention on them more. Or maybe I just need sleep.

Zanarkand (Guerilla Toss - Retreat)
There was some kind of funky beat, but it didn't quite catch my attention.

Barbados (Megan Thee Stallion ft. Spiritbox - Cobra (Rock Remix))
Huh, a rap with... techo/rock instrumentals? An improvement over most rap, and even better that I wasn't getting slapped in the face with awful, crude lyrics.

Chile (Zapla - Is It Love?)
It didn't really do anything for me. There was a little guitar riff in the middle that briefly caught my attention then it all blurred together again.
