March 12 - "Don't Break the Site, AniX" Day

The first annual International Mafia Month was going off without a hitch when mith made a critical mistake: He announced that day's theme was Trademarks, asking questions to flaunt their trademarks and gimmicks. I wore a younger man's clothes then, full of vim and vigor, and decide to take him at his word. Over the course the day, I made 11 threads, fill to the brim with paragraph upon paragraph of Xithian poetry, rants, raves, and everything else under the sun. The site groaned. It couldn't take the weight. And Trademark Day ended earlier than planned as the site collapsed and crashed.

The next year, mith, in an offer of appeasement, decided to go with a different theme for IMM's Trademark Day: "Don't Break the Site, AniX" Day. How could I NOT bring back that one?

So have at it. Definitely don't repeat my arrogance, but if you have something on the site you are known for, let it fly today! Does someone else have a gimmick you find really fun and brightens your day whenever you see them post? Let them know!

March 13 - "Thank God It's (Not) Friday" Day

As luck would have it, we managed to have the 13th of the month NOT become a dreaded Friday the 13th, so let's celebrate our lucky break by talking about...our lucky breaks! As much as Mafia games are a game of skill, they are also games of luck. And it only seems right that if skillful play gets a whole award ceremony (plug for the Scummies!) that lucky plays at least can get a day during IMM.

What are your favorite moments of luck in a game, where everything seemed to line up purely by chance to help you pull victory from the jaws of defeat? A random vigilante kill that struck gold? A last minute roll of the dice on who to lim that came up in your favor? Or maybe even simply the luck of getting assigned a role you've never played before and loving it!

i was in a game and was massively townread because i shot two people in broad daylight who both turned up scum. at the end of the day, an invention went off which caused the mod to post a message confirming that my claimed invention was fake. but it just so happened to be at the bottom of a page in a sea of modposts and the flip was on the next page, so nobody actually read it

March 14 - "Open Up About Opens" Day

It is sometimes said (for example, by me, right now) that Opens are like the Chess of Mafia: All the pieces are on the board and everyone knows how they work. There are no surprises or twists, just a pure contest of skills, move against countermove. So let's give it some love!

What have been some of your favorite Open games to play, moderate, or even just read? Are there any setups you particularly enjoy?

NewD3 is my absolute favorite setup to play. The PRs are really fun to use, not overpowered and not underpowered. The fact that you don't know for sure what sub-setup it is makes the claim game more suspenseful and interesting. The small number of players makes it so the game plays much more tightly than in minis and each post gets scrutinized often. And of course, the newbies are great!

near vanilla is a great setup where the prime appeal is that it won't turn into a catastrophic 9 day slog. i admire the coalition, it makes a novel kind of discussion happen and the mechanic is straightforward enough where everybody gets it and doesnt have to analogize it to a typical execution vote, plus it has a storyish appeal where theres like this big calamity at the beginning of the game that you spend the rest of it trying to understand and learn from. pick your power has this impressive quality of being fun for the players in spite of always creating horribly foul gameplay and unbalanced setups. jungle oligarchy was always a compelling and elegant idea to me, although i suspect it would be better balanced with an extra werewolf (which would make it less compelling and elegant) and also multiball is like not quite mafia unfortunately. although the open queue is exactly the place for it

Honestly though, Mountainous is pretty damn good. It's the platonic ideal of Mafia, and while role shenanigans are often my favorite part of the game (and why I mostly only play Themes), there's something special about having to catch scum through day play and flips alone.

i like mountainous but the nightkill is a mechanic that affects the game just like anything else and mountainous games can be thought of an excess of nightkilling. like there aren't even any masons you have to shoot or anything

the problem with nightless mountanious is that it just takes too long to get rid of all the players (one time i tried this idea of getting rid of them faster via mod intervention). scumteams will complain about how the good town players are too hard to deal with which is of course not a real problem
