Song Contest 212 (Vote by 27 Apr)

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sat Mar 30, 2024 11:24 pm

Post by Song Contest »

Welcome to the Two-Hundred-and-Twelfth Song Contest!
This contest is brought to you by a car fire on Bannerdale Road in Sheffield, which led to a call to emergency services at 2.12am local time.

Submit your song via this FANCY FORM!

What is the MafiaScum Song Contest?

The MafiaScum Song Contest is a competition modeled after the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It's a means to gain exposure to new music through the tastes of your peers, like it or not. Those that enter must also vote for the people they are running against based on how much they like the songs. Everyone picks an alias in the form of a country (any one of your choosing) and sends in a song that they like in order to expose it to the other contestants. After voting, they are tallied in the thread and a winner is named. No matter who wins, everyone wins by gaining new knowledge of songs, artists, albums and genres of music in the process!

List of Previously Entered Songs

How to Participate in the Song Contest:

1. Find a song that you like on any internet medium that isn't restricted or private.

2. Submit it via the form linked above!

3. After submitting, you must confirm that you've entered by either posting in this thread or sending a PM to the Song Contest account.

4. Wait until I reveal the entries. You may or may not be cut (as stated at the end of this post).

5. Once entries are revealed, you will rank your top 10 countries! You will do this via a Google Form link to be provided later. The point values are as follows:
12 points - 1st
10 - 2nd
8 - 3rd
7 - 4th
6 - 5st
5 - 6th
4 - 7th
3 - 8th
2 - 9th
1 - 10th
Please rate fairly by giving all countries a listen. You may not vote for yourself. Everyone, regardless of entry or cut status, may vote, so you can still participate even if you chose not to enter or if you got cut! However, if those that entered and are accepted do not vote, they will get a point penalty (see below), so please consider that before entering.

6. Wait for results. It's that simple!

What entries are/aren't allowed?

In order to eliminate bias, certain entries based on previous performance are banned. After dozens of contests and a following of a vague "Code of Ethics" by the Song Contest population, there have been so many entries that a rule system is now in place as to what can and cannot be entered. Please refer to the list of entered songs linked above and CTRL+F your artist AND song name to make sure it isn't included in the following list.

What isn't allowed?

-You cannot enter an artist that has won ANY contest in the past, no matter how far away that contest is.
-You cannot enter an artist that has been entered in the last 15 contests.
-You cannot enter a song that has been entered before, regardless of placement. (You can enter a cover or different version of that song.) For example: You cannot enter in "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes, but you can enter in "The Hardest Button to Button" by The White Stripes.
-You cannot enter an artist that has achieved a top-three finish in a Battle of the Best. For example: You may not enter anything by the Doves, as they got 2nd in a BotB.
-You cannot enter something that is not a 'song'. We generally interpret this term very loosely, but here are some examples:

Things considered a song: Anything created with an actual artist and song title that is INTENDED for the listener, even if it's painful to listen or even if there's nothing included (Examples: Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit, Eminem - Lose Yourself, Barney - I Love You, John Cage - 4'33, Sunn 0))) - 0))) Bow 1, etc.)

Things not considered a song: Anything without an artist or title, a video clip of something random, a comedy routine (unless it's an actual song a la Stephen Lynch), a large square wave, an animal barking, total silence not being attributed to an artist, etc. (Examples: A clip of a comedian's standup special, an ibex screeching, a clip of a game show, a clip of someone screaming, etc.)

I will let you know if your entry does not meet the criteria of a 'song', but it should be fairly obvious.

What IS allowed, then?

-You can enter an artist that has achieved second place or lower at least 15 contests ago, as long as you do not repeat a song by that artist.
-You can enter an artist that reached the top three in a song contest, unless it won that contest or also got top three in a Battle of the Best.
-You can enter a different version of a song entered before, such as a cover (or the original if the cover was entered first). For example, Johnny Cash's Hurt has already been entered, but you can still enter Nine Inch Nails' version of Hurt.

Other than that, you're good! If your entry violates one of these rules, you'll have until the deadline to fix it or we reserve the right to deny your entry (as if you haven't entered one at all) due to time constraints.

Voting

Anyone is welcome to vote regardless of whether they've entered a song into the contest, but
those who entered songs are required to vote
. If you enter a song and fail to vote, you will be penalized in the form of deductions from the points your song earned from other people's votes (see below).

If fewer than 75% of the people who entered the contest have voted by the end of the first deadline, the voting deadline will be extended, and anybody who hasn't voted will get a penalty. This process will repeat until either 75% of entrants vote or until 16 days have passed (three extensions). As more extensions are needed, those who haven't voted yet will receive escalating penalties, as follows:

-If you fail to vote and fewer than three extensions are needed: You lose 12 points
-If you vote after the first extension: You lose 5 points
-If you vote after the second extension: You lose 10 points
-If you vote after the third extension: You lose 15 points
-If you fail to vote, even after three extensions: You lose 20 points

Ties in final scores will be broken in favour of the entry with the most first-place rankings, then the most second-place rankings, and so on.

All ballots received before the final results are posted will be accepted, even if they come in after deadline.

Spoiler: first!!
New Zealand

Axis of Awesome - How to Write a Love Song
Grinning the whole way though. This is how you write a song!

Antarctica

PinocchioP ft. Hatsune Miku - God-ish
Goofy fun, keeping it interesting and bouncy with the different segments.

Estonia

Orange Goblin - Red Tide Rising
The instrumental opening is really good, so the muddy vocals are a bit of a disappointment. I wasn't expecting incredible vocals with this but this isn't quite what I was expecting even so. It's not screamy in a painful way so that was a relief, but somehow the vocals almost seem too distant.

Mount Celeste

Detektivbyrån - Nattöppet
How can a tune of basically just bells be so pleasant? Do I just automatically like whatever Mount Celeste sends in because they're always solid?

Chile

Serú Girán - Canción de Alicia en el País
Nice classic rock vibe to it.

Benin

Eliminate ft. I Set My Friends on Fire - Poison Oak
Interesting start, but I turned the volume down a bit because some of the sound effects were just not hitting right, and this is otherwise the kind of song I would normally consider turning up.

Old Zealand

The Backseat Lovers - Maple Syrup
Mostly kept my interest, thanks to the little hook fairly early on. Didn't seem to end up doing as much with it as I would've expected though, so my attention was fading towards the end.

Singapore

John Legend ft. Chance the Rapper - Penthouse Floor
More mellow than I expected from someone with 'rapper' in their name. Kinda liked the vibe, felt like something out of Leisure Suit Larry. Was that a little twist at the end, the line about "tearing down" the doors? Am I just weird for thinking a song about some rich playboy suddenly turned on its head there into a violent rebuke of such? Probably.

Colombia

Rei Harakami - First Period
Clickbait title??? Was not expecting elevator music! I guess that's probably part of the point somehow?

Mali

CMAT ft. John Grant - Where Are Your Kids Tonight?
Are they singing with their mouths stuffed with cotton balls? Not really getting much out of this.

Hi all, I'd forgotten how fun these song contests can be, I might have to take part regularly again, or at least listen and vote. As I'm not someone who keeps up with any particular scene, it's a neat way to discover some new artists.

Spoiler: my impressions

Mali: CMAT ft. John Grant - Where Are Your Kids Tonight?

I like the instrumentals quite a lot. The vocals would be annoying to listen to closely but this is more than fine as a song playing in the background when I'm doing something else.

Singapore: John Legend ft. Chance the Rapper - Penthouse Floor

The second half appealed to me more than the first, I think the beats were too prominent at the start. There were a couple of lyrics I thought were quite clever, like the new phone new hair new era.

Antarctica: PinocchioP ft. Hatsune Miku - God-ish

The chorus was enjoyably energetic! Kinda zany but I feel like it was in a way that works.

Old Zealand: The Backseat Lovers - Maple Syrup

The bridge in this song reminded me vaguely of a Bic Ringa's songs. I found the "Did it hurt when I kicked you to the curb?" lyric annoying though. Overall this song was okay though not memorable.

Estonia: Orange Goblin - Red Tide Rising

I liked the intro and then I kept liking it. I turned it up and liked it even more. And I liked that the vocals were a touch calmer than others in this genre.

Colombia: Rei Harakami - First Period

If my kid was still a baby I'd probably play this to get her to sleep, I don't think it would get annoying. On the other hand it didn't get interesting either. Ending with a flat line tone felt appropriate.

Scythia: Luca Turilli - Prophet of the Last Eclipse

Great to listen to, felt perhaps a bit hmm performative at points? But I enjoyed it overall

Chile: Serú Girán - Canción de Alicia en el País

This gave me a vibe of operatic rock dialled right back. Like a mellow South American Meatloaf. I don't think other people might think that but my mind works weirdly sometimes. It was perhaps a tad too mellow though, needed more oomph.

Benin: Eliminate ft. I Set My Friends on Fire - Poison Oak

The video said "get off the internet" and this song made me want to. I'd describe it as though Dubstar swallowed a metal song and were vomiting it back up.

Mount Celeste: Detektivbyrån - Nattöppet

What happens when a talented band forget to bring most of their instruments to the gig. I did enjoy it. Sort of like how I enjoy mint ice cream, a single serving is nice but I wouldn't eat a whole tubful.

Spoiler: my very sleepy thoughts

Mali – Where Are Your Kids Tonight?
A nice, inoffensive, well-sung pop song, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t stand out by the time I get to the end. I enjoyed the retro, eighties vibe and I though CMAT sung it well.

Singapore – Penthouse Floor
Honestly, same as the first song. It’s inoffensive, there’s nothing explicitly wrong with it. But it doesn’t jump out. The lyrics blurred into each other by about halfway through. The bassline was funky and I liked that a lot though.

Antarctica – God-ish
I actually really enjoyed this. Which I did not expect. It’s not anything I’d normally listen to, but the singer is talented even in falsetto and the singing meshes well with the almost hyperactive backing music. It was a lot of fun.

Old Zealand – Maple Syrup
I really like this. Great guitar and bass work that’s right up my street. The singer’s cadence suits the emotiveness of the lyrics.

Estonia – Red Tide Rising
Is it unfair if I know this band IRL? This is one of my favourite metal numbers of all time, I really enjoy the guitar and bass work and it makes up for the roughness of the singing.

Colombia – first period
One of those songs you just know you’re going to like as soon as the intro kicks in. I love the kind of lo-fi music I can fall asleep or read a book to, and this was a great example.

Scythia – Prophet of the Last Eclipse
Good drum work (makes me think of Through the Fire and the Flames) and energy, but I think I found the whole composition a little cluttered? It was enjoyable though.

Chile – Canción de Alicia en el País
This song left me wanting more. Not bad per se, but it needed more to make it stand out. The guitar solo was nice.

Benin – Poison Oak
It did have a catchy beat and maybe in a different mood I could imagine bopping along to it for a bit? Nice drum work which stood out. I unfortunately didn’t enjoy the singer’s voice though and the screamy parts were quite jarring.

Mount Celeste – Nattöppet
Another lovely ambient vibe to almost round out the contest, this really scratched an itch on my tired brain. Maybe blended in a bit but it was an enjoyable track.

New Zealand – How to Write a Love Song
Love me a bit of Axis of Awesome. A funny song, maybe not my favourite of theirs but it does make me laugh.

Spoiler: Rats have ears!

Mali - Where Are Your Kids Tonight?

Really dig the instrumental here, but the vocals drag it down a lot. I just do not like the lead voice, and that's a shame when it otherwise has a solid groove going.

Singapore - Penthouse Floor

This one was very nice. A bit repetitive, but it never got old, easy to just vibe with. Rap break was unremarkable but also inoffensive.

Antarctica - God-ish

PinocchioP is one of my favorite current Vocaloid artists, and while this was definitely not the first song I heard from him, it WAS the first that made me start keeping track. I wanted to do a Miku song for Miku Expo, and then Miku Expo may have turned out shit this year, and I didn't even get to go anyway. Still a good song though.

Old Zealand - Maple Syrup

I am unfairly biased against this one, because I got emotionally invested and then oh the guy just cheated on this person, nevermind. Honestly the song itself is solid, I just can't be objective with it after feeling so betrayed by it. Wonder if maybe that's part of the point?

Estonia - Red Tide Rising

Strong front runner so far. Anyone bothering to read these probably already knows I love this shit, but it's damn good. My initial thoughts were that it sounds like the kind of metal I'd listen to in the early 2010's, and then I checked the upload date and indeed it was! Though this specific song was new to me.

Colombia - First Period

I was wondering whether this would be about menstruation or high school. In reality, this is definitely more pleasant than high school, and though I don't have firsthand experience, also more pleasant than what I hear menstruation is like. I do think pleasant is the best word to describe this. Though I couldn't keep focused on it for the whole six minutes. I'm sorry, I really tried, but also it does seem designed as background music anyway.

Scythia - Prophet of the Last Eclipse

Eclipse was pretty neat eh? Sad this is a Topic link so there are no comments with the lyrics to know what's going on, but even without that this is incredibly well done. Love all the different styles at work here, and all blended excellently. Never heard of Luca Turilli before, but they get granted the honor of me saying I should listen to them more here and then never actually getting around to doing it! Or maybe I WILL get around to it this time, who knows?

Chile - Canción de Alicia en el País

Very pretty voice. And also everything else, but I do think the voice is the standout here.

Benin - Poison Oak

Poppy EDM/Metal-ish fusion is also one of my favorite genres! I didn't really care for the screaming here, would have liked just a little bit more voice pushing it, but other than that this was very well done, and I was impressed with how none of the transitions really felt jarring.

Mount Celeste - Nattöppet

This one's neat. Reminds me a little bit of the ping pong one from seveal contests ago. Really like how the clock motif works into all of it, even after it reaches the point of sounding mostly normal.

New Zealand - How to Write a Love Song

Difficult rating this one, since it's specifically mimicking a style that I don't like, but it is also not actually meant to be "good" in the traditional sense? Guess it can go above the one I didn't like that wasn't ironic about it. Pretty much any other Axis of Awesome song would've gotten higher from me I think.
Maybe the real Mafia was the friends we made along the way

Shiny and new GTKAS thread!
