Spoiler: ScumFfery Meta Case Example

At the moment, I'm thinking somewhere in the realm of CO/TiP/TPR, but I still want ffery to confirm your theory before being anywhere close to confident on Bulbazak since I don't have the time to do it myself.

I have limited chunks of time right now, so I'm going to tackle and post my thoughts about other bulba games as I get the chance. At least for this one, I'm not doing a good job of linking posts, but his iso is pretty easy to follow.

Newbie 1429

He correctly identified the scum team (beginner, scumbab101) within a couple of pages. His early votes switched between them, until he decided beginner's scumminess was actually a site meta clash.

In post 170 he unvoted scumbag101 with no indication why, and asked nacho about his reason for voting caled. In 229, he explains that the unvote reason was scumbag101's replace out and wanting to see what the replacement would do.

Even after dropping the beginner vote, he engaged beginner a LOT on day 1, so I think he remained at least a little suspicious.

In post 301 he says all his leads have dropped and he's basically trying to decide whether to join the caled wagon.

He votes Nacho on day 2 but it didn't feel like a vote with a lot of conviction behind it - more like PoE. He switches to Yiley because he felt Yiley was way overplaying the Newb card. Late day 2 he switches back to Nacho, still calling it PoE, and indicating he doesn't think the two are on the same team. He was mislynched, and continued to think Nacho was scum in his final post after the hammer.

I don't think this game gives a sense of binary reads at all, but of the games I've played with bulba I think this one was notable for his not having strong reads/opinions about who was scum on day 1. When I replaced into the game late day 1, I was actually suspicious because of his lack of conviction/certainty. I wound up meta-ing another bulba newbie games to see if the lack of go-for-the-throat was typical of how he plays newbie games. The game I picked was a scum game, and I wound up drawing more bad conclusions about his play in 1429.

I took his flip as more evidence that I tend to find him scummy no matter what his play. When I adjust for that bias, my reads aren't much better because I wind up with false negatives.

If I had not been the N1K I would probably have pushed for either a Bulba or Nacho mislynch on day 2.

BulbaFenix - hydra of bulbazak and EddieFenex

Although this is a hydra, bulba accounted for a significant amount of the posts and thoughts, particularly the reads lists and read defenses.

They replaced into a fast moving game that had over 500 posts in early day 1.

the first reads list - He had a ton of reads categories, and 5 scum reads, including the player that Eddie had voted earlier. This reads list was the start of my troubles with him in the game because I disagreed with some of the players in that list, including the one he was voting for.

Post 866 absolutely did my head in during the game, and pretty much does the same in reread. It's wall of quotes and responses, with one null-ish response to one null-ish comment by dramonic. The main thrust is the continuation of an argument with ProHawk after which he changes their vote to dramonic. Nothing in that post explains the vote change. In post 895 he explains that dramonic is a viable wagon while ProHawk isn't.

I was still poking at the vote change. Result was read strength: Prohawk > Dramonic > Stevie, but ProHawk was the least lynchable of the bunch. As it turned out, all three were town.

Dramonic and Serene claimed masons (it was a fake claim, but they were both town) and eventually EddieFenex head moved their vote to Nero, who was mislynched on day 1. ProHawk was scum-killed on Night 1.

Day 2, post 2137, Bulba goes back to Stevie. Post 2187, he reacts more or less in real time to a post by DOMO and votes him. This time he's on scum btw. Also, trajectory! I didn't have to go through a whole series of Q&A to figure out what this vote was about.

In 2387 Bulba moves the vote back to Stevie, apparently because of the immediately preceed post by Stevie.

In retrospect, the conversation that started happening at this point in the thread was potentially the key that could have unlocked the game for town. Cephrir chainsaw-defended DOMO, Zdenek was scum reading bulba's attack on DOMO as opportunistic, and DOMO to some extent disengaged from the fray. This argument between bulba, Ceph and Zdenek continued off and on for the next two days and contributed to bulba's mislynch.

In post 2577, he moved the vote back to DOMO. The trajectory on this vote was strong, as a side note.

post 2705 is a full reads list.

Post 3257 he posts a quotewall case on Ceph and votes him. Side note: my post 3286 will live in infamy. That was terrible. It's around this point where I got serious about pushing bulba's lynch.

From this point, his postings become more divided between fighting off his lynch and continuing to push his cases on his scum reads, particularly Cephrir and Zdenek.

he was eventually lynched the following day, and the game thread was open for several hours (nearly a day iirc) before the mod was around. During that time bulba helped set up a reaction test that basically cleared a town player under a lot of suspicion, and did a tremendous amount of documentation of his scum reads and cases.

Whatever I thought of his play prior being lynched at the time (and I thought he was scum), his play after being hammered was exemplary town.

This game, maybe due to the size isn't so much about binary reads. I didn't find any examples where he did a full flip from town to scum. It was more about priotizing scum reads, and moving reads up into null category or down into scum category.

My caution about misreading him did its own binary flip as a result of this game. His extremely aggressive stances are a hallmark of what I see as his town game. Something that is missing in this game.

I would slip on a huge post.

Bulbazak was the SK in this set up and replaced in on night 1.

531 - Catch-up/reads post. Comparing this to the reads lists from ny165 there's a significant stylistic difference. This list is breezy and comparatively shallow. He votes goodmorning (who was scum).

571 He moves to Svenskt, who did look pretty scummy.

714 - declares svenskt town and goes back to the GM wagon. In 721 he says that he's "going back to my strongest scum read" with his GM vote. Sort of a binary read, based on a very towny post by Svenskt that did turn his wagon around for a while.

He stayed here (absent from the site?) while Svenskt was lynched on what looked like a counterclaim from another player, but wasn't.

852 is his first post of day 3 and he puts his GM vote back down while FoSing Syryana.

869 Day 3 reads list. His play on day 3 had me pretty much convinced he was town. I wanted to see my town reads aligned in votes that day because it was potentially 3-2-1 (as it turned out it was exactly 3-2-1 and basically town's best chance to pull out a win). He argued for a GM lynch continually through this game day until post 1026 when he flips to Syryana. I think he was genuinely scumhunting, and he's told me in other games where I've brought this game up that he did think GM was scum, and thought that Syr was the 2nd scum. I wouldn't vote Syr, but Otolia (who I thought was the SK) did vote him, and Bulbazak hammered. His read on GM didn't change, but based on the unwillingness of other players to hammer her at that time, he switched to his other scum read.

Day 4 was 1-1-1 LYLO. He had the final scum figured out. I wound up in the unfortunate position of kingmaker and hammered scum rather than SK.

So this is another game where his vote changes mostly weren't based on a binary read-flip from scum to town, but rather on changing opinions about who looked scummiest of his scum reads, and perhaps who he thought was a viable lynch candidate at various points during the game. The read flip on Svenskt has a binary feel, though as he said after his vote change he was going back to his strongest scum read in re-voting GM. Still I think this game does provide at least some support for the binary read theory.

I'll just give you all my opinions so this goes faster (not in any particular order).

Mac - Probably town. I like the way he's reacting to the pressure on him even though the pressure isn't very good to begin with.
Sakura - Probably town. I don't think any of her actions are scum-motivated. TNE thought her giving reasoning for her vote on KA was scummy. I disagree and would actually prefer that rather than somebody jumping on with no reasoning. The interactions between her and Pieguyn gave me good townvibes from her.
Kaze - Probably town. He's acting similarly to how I've seen him behave and he's giving off good town-vibes. I think he's genuinely scum-hunting even though I'm not a fan of his reaction vote. I do think he believes Pieguyn is scum and he wants to lynch him for it.

Pieguyn - Probably scum. I don't like the way he's trying to twist words and motivations and it looks like he's trying to set people up as looking like scum so he can push a mislynch.

TNE/SSK - Probably town. Since I'm reading Pieguyn as scum and I'm not seeing those interactions as SvS.
KA - Null-town. I'm not getting any particular vibes either way but it generally feels like awkward town not knowing how to engage the thread.
Slimer - Null. Because he's just being Slimer (I actually attempted a meta-dive on him in my micro game, I just ended up bashing my head against my keyboard and ignoring him).
