Thirteen souls, thirsting for adventure, happened upon a most

unusual

offering of a Mafia game. One where they could direct what kind of role they got, and how ~interesting~ it could become.

They applied, showing their heart's desires to a moderator with a dark and twisted mind...

That moderator cackled with delight and began designing the most villainous roles his mind could craft.

And THEN that moderator got sucked into his job. Like, what the actual hell, he's coming home at like nine o' clock every night.

HOWEVER. THEN there was a CAT. That cat sought the mythical Universal Backup of mods. One who was not afraid to take over games like Last Man Standing, or Stars Aligned III, or BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Mafia, or... probably some others I forgot that were also really complicated. One who continues to make unfortunate life choices willingly and cheerfully. One who writes really snarky flavor and doesn't actually have an idea of what to say.

And THUS! A setup was born. One that shall truly show that the most terrifying thing you can get in a setup is

what you ask for

During pregame, you will be given a Role PM. Players confirm by sending back their role name.

Make sure you do not have any questions about your role before confirming.

2)

The baseline for Day deadlines is 14 days.

Extensions probably won't occur. Voting and lynching work the way that you'd expect them to, unless they don't, in which case things will definitely happen but you won't know why. We'll prod people if they don't post for three days, and consider replacement afterward at our discretion.

3)

The baseline for Night deadlines is three days.

It may take longer because of weird role interactions or the mods needing to make sure everything is together. In games like this, we mods tend to get kind of paranoid that they're making an error.

4)

Players may not talk about this game outside the thread except where expressly permitted.

5)

Players may not use the moderator's formatting unless otherwise authorized to do so.

When I received the spreadsheet of submissions, I actually thought massive was the only Town player. I didn't read closely enough to see that McMenno was being arbitrarily assigned Town, and diginova's submission wasn't on there, so I designed the role as if he was the only Townie. ...well, if I had really done that, I would have made him more powerful, like making his Bulletproof instead be a kill nexus, or something. Either way, this was basically a dream role for the one honest person in the game.

I'm not exactly sure why he got lynched. It must have been the total lack of other Townies or something. I added "Captain" to his flip because he suggested it and, yeah, that should have been there from the beginning.

This was the only role where the text of their role indicated something not explicitly stated in their role - in this case, the Hated modifier. I was wondering if I'd have to bring it into play, but Ozgin did a very creditable job with this role. The fact that it cleared Oversoul put a target on his back, though.

I made a mod error Night 2; Ozgin was not targeted by anyone so the Scarecam ability should have gone off. At least that was a benign error; I don't think it would have made any difference whatsoever.

Giving the role no alignment even on flip was an idea that was funnier to design than to play. To the other players in the game, I apologize. (With that said, the player should have figured it out by the total lack of factional abilities.) In retrospect, not giving the player a Win Condition was probably a bad idea anyway (see Groot below).

Yeah, so. Modding lessons learned. Actually, to my great embarrassment, at least one of these is a modding lesson

*FACTIONAL KILL >>>> NO FACTIONAL KILL. Right from there, these roles were underpowered. Do not ever give scum a mandatory kill restriction.
*The ability wasn't even that good because after a few Days people just stopped using their abilities, so there was nothing to redirect.
*The fact that no contingency was ever made for Jeanne11 to die and Plotinus to be left without a kill was an oversight. Given my co-mod's response of "lol", more or less, I threw this in when Jeanne11 died as if it were there all along.

LLD was adamant about not giving out ANY role that featured burning kittens. Since I designed the game without paying attention to who was asking and frankly have been out of the Mafia meme circuit for a few years, I went with it. I probably would have argued more had I known what this role was supposed to be about.

This role was pretty bad. It's not even a Mafia role so much as a lame third-party generic Traitor. wgeurts did a pretty solid job with it, though, what with the Jester claim and then correctly targeting Plotinus Night 1. I chose to let the recruitment resolve after Plotinus was killed so he wouldn't go from being a Mafia Survivor with a kill and a recruit to a Mafia Survivor with a kill and no recruit. And then he decided to get modkilled on diacritics. Seriously, was anyone wondering what would happen there?

This role and this ability are stupidly overpowered. In capable hands it could completely ruin the game by pinning everyone down in their lies. To make up for it, the Win Condition is also really difficult. As the game goes on, it gets a bit easier, but yeah, this was not intended to be easy to win with (nor was anyone else's Win Condition, to be honest).

It does require the player to be willing and ready to actively play with the ability, though. This appeared to be completely lost on the player who got the role, who tried asking a few questions about who massive's role could be, and then completely giving up once dead thread access wasn't forthcoming. (It turns out that for the most part you don't need to try guessing what everyone's role and alignment is; the mod flips them for you.)

Claiming exclusive-winner neutral was also a bad idea but he didn't get lynched for it for some reason, so etc.

The three Win Conditions should contrast with the Groot role (see below) because at least they can potentially make sense later on, if you catch on to what they mean. Maruchan's direct approach to victory - simply asking the player list at large - didn't quite work.

This was one of the roles that was already made when I came into the design room. I hated it at first sight, never stopped hating it, desperately tried to get it switched out but ran out of room to negotiate, and even now I want to apologize to Nacho for wasting like a month and a week of his life.

Even so, the Win Condition was basically impossible to fulfill since massive didn't shoot and Mafia B went out early. I didn't think of it at the time, but being an unstated Lynchee was pretty cool too.

I don't think I voided the vote when he broke his post restriction. Well, whichever.

I designed this role upon seeing that he wanted a complexity of 1 based on the concept of him not needing to do much with his vote at all - how not-complex is that? I don't think I ever noticed that Nacho had also requested a complexity of 1, partly because his role came pre-designed.

Lady Lambdadelta's Win Condition was pretty impractical, so I threw in the Survivor Win Condition (which Oversoul misinterpreted to his extreme detriment in endgame). The third Win Condition was only there because I like Majora's Mask and decided to keep to the aesthetic Rule of Three.

The fact that Lady Lambdadelta could only send a message once per phase while Oversoul could send messages at any time was really dumb. I think at some point I actually intended that to happen for balance reasons, but it was really dumb and the net result was demoralizing Oversoul.

In retrospect, the "miss" bit was trolling on my part that was probably unwarranted. If someone figured it out, it wouldn't have been good - no one willingly targets a nexus.

This role was cool but thoroughly impractical. There's no chance it would have won this game, not after people stopped taking actions.

The story of the setup is basically what I said in the opening post. I was visiting Grey and LLD and GreyICE was talking about his game that was coming up, and his plans to make MewThree a super-stealth deep-cover alt (he was also excited about that slot's previous submission, Jon Snow, because that would let him give out a PM that merely said

You know nothing, Jon Snow.

) I thought the idea was fun and asked to be kept in the loop.

Some number of days after I got back from the trip, the link to the design document came up via Skype. However, at that time I was in the process of being wracked with despair (upupupu) and didn't even click it, feeling no obligation to do so. A few weeks went by and an indignant LLD was asking why I wasn't helping. While I didn't actually say I would help, I decided to assume I did. The design doc had sketches of five or six roles, and by that time over a month had passed since the game finished signups. So, I threw the setup together in five after-work nights. It shows. I didn't try to design with any thought of who was going to get which role (a dumb idea) and even if I had, I was not told anything beyond what has already been posted (particularly w.r.t. Jeanne11 and Plotinus). In addition, I never actually saw GreyICE's post in the sign-up thread until it was posted here on Day 1, so any promises Grey made were not kept. I did not confirm that this setup followed the original guidelines for that reason - everyone got what they originally asked for.

Some advice from the mod side...
*"Bastard" is not an unqualified good thing. It's usually a bad thing ("bastard game" is actually a regular expression, "ba*d game"). So, be careful what you wish for.
*If you wind up in a bastard game, you should expect to get lied to, you should expect that things will be more difficult than they look at face value, and you should ask a LOT of questions. Plotinus asked a bunch of questions about her role and managed to get it to work even more broadly than I anticipated. MewThree essentially checked himself before he wrecked himself. Most of the rest of the players, particularly the neutrals except for Oversoul, did no such thing. As a moderator, I want the game to be confusing, but not because you don't have any idea what to do. It's no good to have a game where people have no idea how to play, but the explanation for what's going on probably isn't going to get handed to you if you do nothing to pursue it.
*If you wind up in a bastard game, you should assume that rules are there for a reason and follow those suckers.

I made the names up as I went along. There wasn't enough time to be fancy and/or rigorous. If anything they were just "Mafia".

I would suggest shorter Night phases.

(1) Longer Night phases technically help your role.
(2) It's easier to meet deadlines when not doing everything via phone from a 6+ time offset from everyone else.

If you still don't understand your role and the ability to basically get the mod to say, for instance,

There are four players or factions that control Night-kills.
