Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry is a chemistry subdiscipline involving the scientific study of the structure, properties, and reactions of organic compounds and organic materials, i.e., matter in its various forms that contain carbon atoms. Study of structure includes using spectroscopy and other physical and chemical methods to determine the chemical composition and constitution of organic compounds and materials. Study of properties includes both physical properties and chemical properties, and uses similar methods as well as methods to evaluate chemical reactivity, with the aim to understand the behavior of the organic matter in its pure form (when possible), but also in solutions, mixtures, and fabricated forms. The study of organic reactions includes both their preparation—by synthesis or by other means—as well as their subsequent reactivities, both in the laboratory and via theoretical (in silico) study.

The range of chemicals studied in organic chemistry include hydrocarbons, compounds containing only carbon and hydrogen, as well as compositions based on carbon but containing other elements. Organic chemistry overlaps with many areas including medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, organometallic chemistry, and polymer chemistry, as well as many aspects of materials science.

Organic compounds form the basis of all earthly life. They are structurally diverse. The range of application of organic compounds is enormous. They either form the basis of, or are important constituents of, many products including plastics, drugs, petrochemicals, food, explosive material, and paints.

• 1. This is a semi-open setup.
  
  2. The preferred voting method is to put vote tags around the player's name, but I will still accept the old method of bolding the word "vote" followed by said player's name, e.g. VOTE: Antiheroor

  . As long as I can tell to whom you are referring, spelling does not count and I will accept abbreviated or otherwise shortened forms of the name of the vote's recipient. If you want to change your vote, it would be cool if you unvoted first, but you don't have to. You may also VOTE: No Lynch, unvoted the same way as before.
  
  2a. If you're in a hydra account, votes from your individual account will not count. Similarly, if you vote an individual head of a hydra, the vote will not count. This rule is NOT to be used for late game "trick vote" shenanigans.
  
  3. A majority of votes is required for a lynch, even at deadline. Once a lynch has been decided, it is final and further votes and unvotes do not count for the current day. If deadline is reached with no player having enough votes for a lynch, the day ends in an automatic No Lynch.
  
  4. Day 1 will have a 21 (real) day deadline. Day 2 will have an 18 (real) day deadline. Subsequent days will have a 14 day deadline. I reserve the right to extend this deadline, but play like I won't (because I probably won't).
  
  5. I'll give you one "bah" post after you die. But it has to be funny. It also can't contain anything game-related. The first post will contain a link to the dead thread. I will players access as they exit the game.
  
  6. Don't be a (too much of a) jackass. Please, let's keep the lynching and killing of each other from becoming personal.
  
  7. You may post in any color that can be easily read against the forum background other than
  dark red
  . That color is mine.
  
  8. Unless you're the moderator (that's me), please do not delete or edit any posts in this thread.
  
  9. You are not allowed to discuss this game outside of the thread unless I tell you otherwise, nor are you allowed to discuss other ongoing games in this thread. This one is a big deal to me, just don't do it. I don't care if you're dead in that game or you think it won't affect the outcome of that game; no making references to ongoing games (vague or otherwise).
  
  10. Do not quote or pretend to quote any private communication, either from me or from anyone else you are allowed to talk with at night. You are allowed to paraphrase, but you are not allowed to plagiarize. If in doubt as to your paraphrase's legality, PM me with the wording you want to use.

• Inventors' targets will be informed of their abilities at the beginning of the night. Their ability is one shot and must be used that night. These abilities are also "free". That is, they can be used in addition to a power role the player may have. Should a player receive multiple abilities from inventors s/he may use all the abilities.

Town Win Condition:

You when when all mafia-aligned players are eliminated.

Scum Win Condition:

You win when mafia make up at least 50% of the living population.

Markovnikov's Rule

McLafferty Rearrangement

This reaction is explained as the rearrangement of monounsaturated molecular ion or radical ion with the cleavage of α,β-bond of the unsaturated system along with the concomitant transfer of a γ hydrogen via a six-membered transition state by the formation of a pair of unsaturated fragments, regardless of which fragment holds the charge is generally referred to as the McLafferty rearrangement. During the fragmentation, the structural, steric, and electronic factors determine the actual fragmentation paths. The mechanistic feature for carbonyl compounds has been discussed and it is explicated that if the distance between γ-hydrogen and oxygen are >1.8A°, then McLafferty rearrangement do not occur. It has been found almost all molecular ions of aldehydes, ketones, thioketones, carboxylic acids, and acetates undergo a silyl group migration. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a physical phenomenon in which nuclei in a magnetic field absorb and re-emit electromagnetic radiation. This energy is at a specific resonance frequency which depends on the strength of the magnetic field and the magnetic properties of the isotope of the atoms; in practical applications, the frequency is similar to VHF and UHF television broadcasts (60–1000 MHz). A key feature of NMR is that the resonance frequency of a particular substance is directly proportional to the strength of the applied magnetic field. It is this feature that is exploited in imaging techniques; if a sample is placed in a non-uniform magnetic field then the resonance frequencies of the sample's nuclei depend on where in the field they are located. Since the resolution of the imaging technique depends on the magnitude of magnetic field gradient, many efforts are made to develop increased field strength, often using superconductors. The effectiveness of NMR can also be improved using hyperpolarization, and/or using two-dimensional, three-dimensional and higher-dimensional multi-frequency techniques.

The Corey-Seebach Reaction allows a reversal of the normal reactivity of acyl carbon atoms, which combine only with nucleophiles. The German term "Umpolung" is widely used for this inversion of reactivity.

The Miller Urey Experiment

The Miller–Urey experiment (or Urey–Miller experiment) was an experiment that simulated the conditions thought at the time to be present on the early Earth, and tested for the occurrence of chemical origins of life. Specifically, the experiment tested Alexander Oparin's and J. B. S. Haldane's hypothesis that conditions on the primitive Earth favored chemical reactions that synthesized more complex organic compounds from simpler organic precursors. Considered to be the classic experiment concerning the experimental abiogenesis, it was conducted in 1953 by Stanley Miller and Harold Urey at the University of Chicago and later the University of California, San Diego and published the following year.

After Miller's death in 2007, scientists examining sealed vials preserved from the original experiments were able to show that there were actually well over 20 different amino acids produced in Miller's original experiments. That is considerably more than what Miller originally reported, and more than the 20 that naturally occur in life. Moreover, some evidence suggests that Earth's original atmosphere might have had a different composition from the gas used in the Miller–Urey experiment. There is abundant evidence of major volcanic eruptions 4 billion years ago, which would have released carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen (N₂), hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), and sulfur dioxide (SO₂) into the atmosphere. In Molecular Orbital Theory, the bonding between atoms is described as a combination of their atomic orbitals. The Grignard Reaction is the addition of an organomagnesium halide (Grignard reagent) to a ketone or aldehyde, to form a tertiary or secondary alcohol, respectively. The reaction with formaldehyde leads to a primary alcohol.

Grignard Reagents are also used in the following important reactions: The addition of an excess of a Grignard reagent to an ester or lactone gives a tertiary alcohol in which two alkyl groups are the same, and the addition of a Grignard reagent to a nitrile produces an unsymmetrical ketone via a metalloimine intermediate. Delépine Reaction

The Delépine Reaction allows the synthesis of primary amines from alkyl halides by the reaction with hexamethylentetramine (urotropine) and subsequent acidic hydrolysis of the resulting quartenary ammonium salt.

An S_N2 reaction leads to the hexamethylentetramine salt. In chloroform, the starting materials are soluble wheareas the products crystallize out. It is usually not possible to purify the salt. Hexamethylenetetramine is formed in nearly quantitative yield from the condensation of ammonia and formaldehyde. The compound is rather stable, although dihetero-substituted methylene groups are usually highly reactive. In neutral, aqueous solution, urotropine remains stable even at elevated temperatures. Urotropine decomposes in dilute aqueous acid, and the derived ammonium salts also decompose to form the amine hydrochloride and formaldehyde (and formaldehyde diethylacetal). During acidic hydrolysis or ethanolysis, semiaminals are formed first; these further decompose to yield formaldehyde or the diethylacetal, ammonium salt and the amine hydrochloride.

X-ray Crystallography

X-ray crystallography is a tool used for identifying the atomic and molecular structure of a crystal, in which the crystalline atoms cause a beam of incident X-rays to diffract into many specific directions. By measuring the angles and intensities of these diffracted beams, a crystallographer can produce a three-dimensional picture of the density of electrons within the crystal. From this electron density, the mean positions of the atoms in the crystal can be determined, as well as their chemical bonds, their disorder and various other information.

Since many materials can form crystals—such as salts, metals, minerals, semiconductors, as well as various inorganic, organic and biological molecules—X-ray crystallography has been fundamental in the development of many scientific fields. In its first decades of use, this method determined the size of atoms, the lengths and types of chemical bonds, and the atomic-scale differences among various materials, especially minerals and alloys. The method also revealed the structure and function of many biological molecules, including vitamins, drugs, proteins and nucleic acids such as DNA. X-ray crystallography is still the chief method for characterizing the atomic structure of new materials and in discerning materials that appear similar by other experiments. X-ray crystal structures can also account for unusual electronic or elastic properties of a material, shed light on chemical interactions and processes, or serve as the basis for designing pharmaceuticals against diseases.

In an X-ray diffraction measurement, a crystal is mounted on a goniometer and gradually rotated while being bombarded with X-rays, producing a diffraction pattern of regularly spaced spots known as reflections. The two-dimensional images taken at different rotations are converted into a three-dimensional model of the density of electrons within the crystal using the mathematical method of Fourier transforms, combined with chemical data known for the sample. The Octet Rule

The octet rule is a chemical rule of thumb that states that atoms of main-group elements tend to combine in such a way that each atom has eight electrons in its valence shell, giving it the same electronic configuration as a noble gas. The rule is especially applicable to carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and the halogens, but also to metals such as sodium or magnesium.

Noble gases have complete outer electron shells, which make them very stable. Other elements also seek stability, which governs their reactivity and bonding behavior. Halogens are one electron away from filled energy levels, so they are very reactive. Chlorine, for example, has seven electrons in its outer electron shell. Chlorine readily bonds with other elements so that it can have a filled energy level, like argon. +328.8 kJ per mole of chlorine atoms are released when chlorine acquires a single electron. This Lewis acid-catalyzed electrophilic aromatic substitution allows the synthesis of alkylated products via the reaction of arenes with alkyl halides or alkenes. Friedel-Crafts Acylation

This electrophilic aromatic substitution allows the synthesis of monoacylated products from the reaction between arenes and acyl chlorides or anhydrides. The products are deactivated, and do not undergo a second substitution. Normally, a stoichiometric amount of the Lewis acid catalyst is required, because both the substrate and the product form complexes.

The Friedel-Crafts Alkylation may give polyalkylated products, so the Friedel-Crafts Acylation is a valuable alternative. The acylated products may easily be converted to the corresponding alkanes via Clemmensen Reduction or Wolff-Kishner Reduction.

Luche Reduction

The selective 1,2-reduction of enones with sodium borohydride is achieved in combination with CeCl3.

CeCl3 is a selective Lewis acid catalyst for the methanolysis of sodium borohydride. The resulting reagents, various sodium methoxyborohydrides, are harder reducing agents (according to HSAB principles) and therefore effect an 1,2-reduction with higher selectivity.

The Pechmann Condensation allows the synthesis of coumarins by reaction of phenols with β-keto esters. The reaction is conducted with a strong Brønstedt acid such as methanesulfonic acid or a Lewis acid such as AlCl3. The acid catalyses transesterification as well as keto-enol tautomerisation. A Michael Addition leads to the formation of the coumarin skeleton. This addition is followed by rearomatisation. Subsequent acid-induced elimination of water gives the product.

Mass spectrometry (MS) is an analytical technique that produces spectra (singular spectrum) of the masses of the atoms or molecules constituting a sample of material. The spectra are used to determine the elemental or isotopic signature of a sample, the masses of particles and of molecules, and to elucidate the chemical structures of molecules, such as peptides and other chemical compounds. Iodine Staining

The iodine staining technique allows us to carry around a marked version of our TLC run rather than having to pencil sketch our spots in the UV viewer. The iodine vapors chemically attach to analytes on the TLC plate. While this makes the samples unrecoverable for future use (usually you will not need to recover your sample from a TLC plate), it makes analysis easier. Some compounds might not even appear under UV light, making other visualization techniques such as iodine staining necessary.

Properly develop a TLC plate.
Obtain another developing jar. Operating under a hood and wearing gloves (the iodine is corrosive and toxic), use a spatula to place 5-6 iodine chips into the bottom of the developing jar. Replace the lid.
After the developing solvent has completely evaporated, place the TLC slide in the developing jar containing the iodine. Replace the lid.
Continuously monitor the development of your slide. Typically, the staining process takes a couple of minutes. You should see the analyte begin to take on a yellowish color. Be sure not to allow the silica on the plate itself to begin staining. This will happen after the slide has been exposed to the iodine fumes for too long.
Once the analytes are sufficiently visible (if they stained at all) and before the slide begins to stain, remove the slide from the developing jar. The iodine chips may be reused and you may place them back in their original container.

The Haber Process

The Haber Process combines nitrogen from the air with hydrogen derived mainly from natural gas (methane) into ammonia. The reaction is reversible and the production of ammonia is exothermic.

The catalyst is actually slightly more complicated than pure iron. It has potassium hydroxide added to it as a promoter - a substance that increases its efficiency.
