Confrontation Mafia

By PolarBoy, with thanks to Cuban Smoker

As you walk down the street heading back home, you're pretty pleased with yourself. The hit went well, the townies suspect nothing, the Godfather will be pleased. You hear a footstep behind you. You quickly turn around, pointing your gun at the source of the sound. By his bearing, and the gun pointed at your own head, you know he's a mobster, but with whom? He might be a member of your own family, but you can't be sure in the dark. Do you fire?

Rules

Players recieve a PM informing them which mafia family they belong to. They may be from the same family, or from different families. The goal of the game is to correctly identify if the other player is friend or foe, while at the same time concealing your own identity from him.

It's good to fire at enemies. It's good to put the hammer down for friends. Conversely, it's bad to fire at friends, and bad to put the hammer down for enemies. If you do something good, and your opponent does something bad, you win, and your opponent loses. If you and your opponent both make the right decision, or both make the wrong decision, you tie.

Play proceeds by players discussing whether to fire or hold, and the game ends when both players have sent their decision to the mod. Once a decision is sent it cannot be retracted.

Past games

Game 1, mathcam(tails, fired) Vs. rite(heads, fired), Draw
Game 2, Kelvin(tails, fired) Vs. Someone(heads, fired), Draw

Game 4, mathcam(heads, trusted) Vs. Kelvin(tails, trusted), Draw

Game number one will be mathcam versus rite. I'll send out roles immediately.

er...actually, how it works is, you can send your decision to me by PM anytime. When I recieve decisions from both players, the game ends. Which means you can't know if your opponent has made his decision until you make your own.

As you listen to the other mafia member talk to you, one thing becomes very clear; he is not a friend. You pull the trigger, the smartest thing you've done so far. It's such a waste of grey matter to have it spilled all over the pavement. Apparently he thought the same thing as you.

mathcam(tails) and rite(heads) fired at each other, tie game.

Next game is Kelvin Versus Someone. Roles going out.

to be totally honest I don't think I like this game much. It basically boils down to rock-paper-scissors with more talking. I might try experimenting with a different payout table though.(I wonder if Cuban Smoker still has his, that one was interesting)

Well, in all the completed games so far, shooting has been the correct choice. The missing element was that neither player convinced the other player not to shoot. The only way to earn points is if your opponent makes an innaccurate appraisal of the situation.

Something to take note of though is that your risk of losing points is neither increased or decreased by always shooting. It's the wrong choice as often as it's the right one.

Actually I was concurring with you, while illustrating what makes the shooting bias so intriguing. What I was pointing out was that not only was the always shoot bias not based on a rational analysis of the game, but there was no rational analysis of the game that yielded always shooting as a viable strategy.

On another note, does anybody find it odd that this game is an offshoot of Mafia and that the fictional character who would most enjoy it(Vizzini, from The Princess Bride as pointed out by Kelvin) was a Sicilian?

I'm thinking of a variation where, by maneuvering your opponent into saying a word or series of words, you get to find out what side he's on, or some other posting restriction perhaps.

"I'm tails, what are you?" Macros said. "You'll find out as soon as I shoot you." was mikehart's less than friendly response. Neither could take it anymore. Both put down their guns. "Come 'er brother." Macros said, shaiking hands with mikehart.

mikehart and Macros, both heads family, chose to trust each other. Tie game(Again).

Roles going out for game 4, mathcam Vs. Kelvin

Stewie and Someone quickly reached their decisions, that is, Someone recognized Stewie for who he was, while Stewie fired on an ally. Someone wins the first ever normal confrontation victory.
