Yeah if you're playing civ v you pretty much can't go over 4 cities because the game is designed that way for ??? Reasons. Higher tech costs, higher social policy costs, and you'll never get the national wonders if you keep building cities. And being a city states ally is practically equivalent to owning it without any of the downsides, seeing as you get the various bonuses and copies of their resources (and if you invest in the patronage tree like a madman than you get even more bonuses in things)
Tbh you guys needs to all move over to civ 6, it's low-key a better game than 5.Last edited by Elbirn on Thu Jul 27, 2017 2:10 pm, edited 1 time in total.-

Honestly no matter what you want to do, Tradition is nearly always the best startup. Even if you plan on going wide and think "oh I should go liberty", even then tradition seems to be a faster start by giving you a strong starting core to then expand fromIn post 575, Alisae wrote:.SNIP.
Plus if you go liberty and then you don't get to settle a fuck ton of cities for any reason, you're boned.
I tend to go max tradition -> honor opener if I'm getting wrecked by barbarians (optional) -> cherry pick some policies from liberty while waiting for rationalism to be available -> max rationalism -> after doing that who cares you already won the game just pick whatever you want, and don't forget to pick order ideology because the revolution must live on-

When I play, I want all the production and science, and order gives that to me, as well as several happiness boosting policies and gold cost reduction when purchasing buildings
Autocracy is all military all the time which is fun if that's what you're doing that game but I usually don't feel like killing everyone and would literally drag a game out waiting for my inevitable science/culture victory while happily playing Sim city, rather than being smart and getting the game over with by taking all the capitals
I never said I was good, just that I like civ.
I did have a great game as autocratic shoshone on a large earth map w/domination victory only, where I did honor like a madman-

I chose China and ended up immediately popping a Eureka moment for having met another Civ at game start. I was confused, and saw I met Pericles.
Spoiler: Big Daddy China
Of course, I was well versed in anti-computer tactics from Civ4, like performing worker steals. I immediately declared war on Pericles and captured his settler.
Spoiler: The End of Greece- 4000BC
I began searching for my second city site at 3960BC, and despite choosing Pangaea, when I hit the coast I gained another Eureka moment.
Spoiler: Moms Spaghetti
It's 3840BC. Rate my Empire.
Spoiler: I probably should have chosen Immortal
I think I'll wait until Civ5 is on sale after this game. This is hilariously bad game design. I still enjoy Civ4, even though that game is ancient. If I wanted something more modern I would play EU4.
I'm not going to dissuade you from buying Civ5, it's p great
Civ6 is a worthy entry to the franchise though? I mean your first complaint there is valid, I think that's some sort of a bug that pops up every so often, possibly made worse by you adding an additional civ to the game and throwing things a bit off kilter. So far as I know the game is supposed to have you spawn in a minimum number of tiles away from each other.
As for the eureka for discovering another continent, if I'm not mistaken your "pangea" is divided into continents despite being one contiguous land mass; think eurasia. That or discovering ocean makes that eureka pop because *something* has to.
Man idk Civ6 improved on a lot of things imo, districts are great, the first expansion is coming out in ~2 weeks, just hold on to your butts-

Also I'm sure I've said this a million times now but I would love to have either a "Game of the month" type thing where someone makes up a Turn 0 save file with XYZ settings and we all play it and discuss how it goes, or some sort of Hot Seat save that we pass back and forth; but I foresee no way for everyone to be available to play a game all together at the same time and for hours on end, y'all haven't played a game in months now-

I never totally understood the best way to play venice. I always just established my happy little hermit kingdom with my one city challenge gogogo, allied every city state through the power of money, then waited for diplo victory to happen. City state buyouts always seemed dumb because they'd be puppet cities that I couldn't really do anything with, and I'd get more from having them as a city state ally, especially for diplo purposes-

Wasn’t that true in 5 as well as 6? There are also multiple Pantheons and policies that separate them, in both 5 and 6.-

oh I forgot to help
I am sorry
I think your opening changes based on start position as well really. in any event depending on what tile improvements I can do right away I typically just go builder -> pause builder / start settler the turn that population hits 2 -> finish builder -> monument in both cities
sometimes I skip scouts and slingers entirely. sometimes you get a scout from a tribal village, sometimes you build a slinger to get the tech boost and sometimes you dont. I think in terms of what value am I getting from this in the immediate term and near future. and military doesnt give you ANYTHING unless you USE IT. so I procrastinate on military units until i spot a barb camp or another civ. this isnt necessarily correct but it is nonetheless what I tend to do.
porkens is there civ 6 specific details you need? like districts and such?-

DISTRICTS:In post 746, Porkens wrote:Yeah how do you plan ahead for districts?
Is it ok to move my first settler or is that an exponential waste of time?
so first of all if you haven't memorised all of the district adjacency bonuses: absolutely memorise them asap. idk if I have a quick resource/link for that but you can view these details in the ingame civipedia or google it or something
secondly, probably the biggest thing for planning ahead is housing/population. the number of districts you can build in a city is locked to that cities current population; at 1 pop you can build 1 district, 4 pop = 2 districts, 7 pop = 3, so on in that fashion. So it's a balance between prioritizing certain districts in certain cities and also making sure each city has enough housing to grow and support more districts.
example: if I know I want to build a harbor in a particular coastal city, I'll plan on building that first or second, because I need the housing from that harbor *IN ORDER TO MAKE THE OTHER DISTRICTS*. if you get antsy for a campus holy site theater square first and then WHUPS, not enough housing for a 4th district: you'll be mad upset my dude.
you also have to keep in mind the fact that you simply can't build every district in a city. so you have to prioritize. coastal cities get harbors. inland cities on rivers get commercial hubs. cities by mountains are gonna be the bulk of your campuses and holy sites. this prioritizing ties into memorizing adjacency bonuses like I said earlier.
and with that all being said, my biggest protip to you is to use the map pins feature! it is absurdly helpful to me, I'll settle a city and then use pins to plan out that entire city, like I already know that a campus is going in this cluster of mountains and a commercial hub should be by a river and what can I put in between these districts for max bonuses and if I'm planning my districts to go here than this group of other tiles NEEDS to be tile improvements because my people need to work somewhere...etc.
obviously that's a bit over the top and even your best laid plans can go to waste but making a "rough draft" of what you wanna do is great. if there are wonders that you want to build don't forget that you can pin those as well, I'll mark a hypothetical spot for a wonder and then check if theres a spot adjacent to it for a good theater square. you can pin spots for potential new cities (4 tiles away) and then from there plan for their districts to go adjacent to another cities districts for even more bonuses. much to do!
SETTLER:
As long as you're not running like 5 turns away from your spawn its probably fine
settle in place? fine!
move one tile to a more desirable spot but still settling turn 0? fine!
bad spawn, take 1-2 turns to get a great city location? fine!
what's really important here is being able to identify the best possible spot for your capital. if you can get a river or a lake, do it. if you can get coastal, do it. really good natural wonder nearby? tempting!
But what I wouldn't go for is a spot a whole 3 turns away, at that point what you're really gonna want to do is settle your SECOND city in that location.
okay I've vomited many words lemme know your thoughts and additional inquiries. I probably repeated myself a bunch but hopefully I've made sense-

this is also worth noting. if I'm not mistaken, city centers always make themselves 2 food 1 hammer. plains hills are 1 food 2 hammer, so a city center on a plains hill tile will boost to 2 food and simply keep the additional hammer. any other tile, it just becomes 2-1; luxury resources not withstanding. In post 747, Espeonage wrote: Plains Hills is the only boost to your city centre. Unless there is an exceptional reason don't waste a turn. It isn't as important as say Civ5. Don't be afraid to though.-

I think that depends on how you want to play the gameIn post 750, Porkens wrote:Awesome! Ok, how stressed out should I be about relationships with other civs and delegates ?
if you're super aggressive and dont rightly give a damn if the whole world declares war on you then just dont care
if you're simply vibing and want to have a friend or two then go for it. alliances can be well worth it, particularly if you have loads of trade routes going to an allied civ. protip: gilgamesh of sumeria is programmed to always accept a declaration of friendship if you do it the exact turn that you meet him, and he will be your best friend forever if you keep it up.
citystates: depending on their location and suzerain bonus they may be better off as food. it's really situational. I advocate for almost always keeping science city states around, 3 delegates at every science CS in a game will give you libraries with 8+ science! it's also worth noting that theres a green diplomacy policy card that when equipped, your first delegate to a city state counts as 2. I like to save my delegates until I can put that card on and then get a free delegate at every city state
envoys! I'm thinking of envoys I'm an idiot! argggggggghhhhh-

my social policy tip to you is keep learning them, they're all situationally good and you need to learn when to run what I guess. early game, the +1 production card is great, I like to run the one thats +1 faith until I get my pantheon, it's all preference.
classical republic -> economic slots: +50% settler production/+50% builder production diplomatic slot: +1 envoy if first envoy card wildcard slot: +1 production
^ is what I default to a lot in early game for fast expansion and building-
