Thok wrote:If a user had been nominated for the title "Straight" and he responded "I'm insulted that people would call me straight! I like men! Calling me straight is an insult!", I'd be defending user's right to make that statement and I'd be annoyed by people who seconded and thirded him for the title "Straight" or offered up the title "Nate Straight" as an alternative once he already said he was insulted by the original title.
You would defend his right to make a statement that may offend some people? But wouldn't that just turn the entire titlefairy thread into a flamewar where everyone hates each other and nothing productive is acheieved? No, and I hope you agree that a person would have the right to A) have that opinion and B) express it
strongly
if the situation warrented.
Thok wrote:I don't think anybody would be claiming that user is heterophobic in that scenario.
So, what, you can say sentences that have powerful words (say "Straight is an insult" or "NO! Gay is an insult") without actually meaning to offend anyone?
Thok wrote:(I realize that there are cultural reasons why the two scenarios aren't symmetrical [specifically that people have never very rarely straight as an insult and have commonly used gay as an insult.])
Yeah but I understand where your metaphor is coming from, you made that point well, if inaccuratly.

Have you come to my point of view on
Thok wrote:It's all about him being insulted by other people's comments, not him trying to insult others.
yet? I really think that was a poor call on your part, and a terrible delinitation.

Also, dude, you and I know which side "a certain user" fell on. If that doesn't give you a little insight into how wrong you are, you might wanna check six.

The first amendment argument shows how ignorant he really is.

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution is the part of the United States Bill of Rights that expressly prohibits the United States Congress from making laws "respecting an establishment of religion" or that prohibit the free exercise of religion, infringe the freedom of speech, infringe the freedom of the press, limit the right to peaceably assemble, or limit the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Although
the First Amendment only explicitly applies to the Congress, the Supreme Court has interpreted it as applying to the executive and judicial branches.
Additionally, in the 20th century, the Supreme Court held that the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment applies the limitations of the First Amendment to each state, including any local government within a state.

In other words, there's no provision in law or otherwise to extend first amendment protection to privately owned and operated web sites. The first amendment guarantees his protection
from the government of the united states
to suppress his hate speech.

Not to mention hate speech has always been borderline not being protected by the First Amendment, especially if its intent is to incite something.

Last I checked MafiaScum wasn't part of the executive or judicial branches of the united states government nor a branch of the US Congress.

I log everything. I have to because I work remotely most of the time and IM is a large part of how I communicate with people I work with. I never know when someone is going to send me something that I'm going to have to go and find later.

I also take the same approach in my personal life. I keep journals and log books, I take notes in meetings and I've gotten really good at writing in short-hand.

Basically I live by this mantra: If it isn't written down somewhere it didn't happen.

@Oman: I have no particular interest in CJmiller and I really couldn't care less whether he gets banned or not. I'm not even sure what everyone has their panties in a twist over. I just commented because it's a lame argument. If ignorance was a litmus test for having an MS account there would be a hell of a lot less people here.

BTW shouldn't this entire discussion be moved to the ban thread?

I get the original point, and I don't care. That was the theme of my last post. We're way off topic and you're wasting a lot of your own time and energy by talking about it in the title fairy thread.

CJ should embrace his homosexuality and enjoy it. It'll make him happier in the long run.
Seriously. Read your role PM before playing.

Oman, for future reference, it is difficult to determine whether your complaints are legitimate complaints or just trolling when they are accompanied by a "Teehee, Second: [Funny Title That Someone Doesn't Like]" portion of the post.

Please take this discussion elsewhere. This thread is for the nomination and discussion of titles.

How about the last 6 or so of my posts which have contained legitimate points that should be at least read with some thought even if you don't want to address them in any official capacity?

I've read them, and I agree with Thok.

CJMiller may well have a point of view on things that I find offensive (though what he says in scumchat is outside the scope of my moderation, and frankly I find the habit of quoting scumchat in an attempt to make people look bad/ignorant/etc. tedious). What he said here, however, was clearly a reaction to a joke which he felt (whether correctly or not) was at his expense. I don't think this is a clear case of "he crossed the line", and I chose to be lenient with
both
sides.

If you want to start a discussion on the use of "Gay" as an insult and have an enlightened discussion about that, feel free to start one. Just understand that trolling isn't an effective method of enlightened discussion.

Thank you very much for the nom, but people do actually seem to still think I'm TSQ and it's pissing me off.

I know you didn't mean that title offensively, but I will not be accepting any titles that reference the thought that I am shea.
unless it cleverly refers to some other part of my role in this community. But I don't think anyone will do one like that, it'll all be "Not shea" or "Not TSQ's alt" or something like that
